- A lecture delivered by Prof. Randall Collins from the University of Pennsylvania as part of Cardiff University's Distinguished Lecture Series, September 2013.
The title of this lecture is 'Violence as Emotional Dominance: Micro-sociological causes'
Thank you, that was really interesting. I imagine how you discribe groups acting may be the same for individuals. Where I work there are occasionally situations which I felt could potentially have become violent, thought actual violence is rare. Threat displays always feel like I'm watching a performance and one I'm expected to conform to, or reciprocate in some way. I don't, I just watch them closely for signs of an attack (not so close they could hit me without taking a step) and speak to them with a mixture of politeness and sarcasm. That's worked for me so far. The only time I've been hit was by a drunk little middle aged woman, she punched me when I got distracted and turned away.

One should never read aloud from papers!
i'm grateful that he did, and that it was recorded and posted
maybe so, but Randall Collins is one of the most innovative sociologists producing theory today. personally, I don't care whether he's ready from notes or speaking extemporaneously. before you judge, check out the scholarship he's produced over the past 40 years,
