Why do anti leaf fans think that leaf fans think OEL didn't deserve a penalty? The actual argument is the if what OEL did was a penalty, why wasn't the cross check to him one, or the slash to the back of the leg one? Better yet, if you say that OEL cross checked as retaliation, then whoever it was that retaliated for that one should also get the penalty? Also, for fun, if OEL got the retaliatory for a slash to the back of the knee, then the refs saw that infraction and somehow decided that a full slash to the back of the knee is acceptable. Everyone needs to accept the officiating is by far the worst of any sport and i mean worse than the NBA who makes sure the stars get preferential treatment.
Why must the combination of the Leafs and refs make me have a near heart attack? Anyway great game, glad to see both Knies and Matthews producing, things feeling more positive than years past. Also damn I feel bad for Samsonov in Vegas, but I mean he’s their problem now 😈
Love the guy but it just doesn't look like he's an NHL level goalie. It sucks because I think it's mostly mental but hey, for goaltenders the mental game is a huge part of it. You can even just visually see that with how calm and collected Stolarz and Woll both are, even during scrambles.
Stolarz is exactly what Woll needed, and Woll is exactly what Stolarz needed. Stolarz is in a place in his career where he should probably be a starter, but he hasn't started enough to just be handed the reigns of being a starter on any good team. Woll, meanwhile, has injury concerns, and I'm sure there's some pressure there when you know if you get injured your team has a very good chance of absolutely tanking (Loved Sammy in interviews but good lord was it terrifying when Woll was out). Additionally Woll seems to play his best when he's competing for the net. Last year he was battling with Sammy when Sammy was still playing decently, and it seemed to really help him take the next step. This year he's comepeting for the net against a much better goaltender and... he's keeping up. Both of them are undeniably top 10 in the league, debatably at LEAST one of them are top 5. Obviously it's always a little iffy having a nearly 50/50 tandem since you generally want to keep a hot goalie in net, but I really think it's been good for both of them to split the net like this. Stolarz definitely should continue to get the nod for a few extra games but I think easing Woll into more starts and seeing if he can handle it (both in terms of performance and health) would be great too.
Early on in Stolarz career, he was always hurt, and came close to calling it quits. This is the way it is in the NHL, goalies get hurt quite a lot. Tandems are the new way in this League, not many teams have a clear number one. Many time the number one becomes number two.
My wife and I went to the game last night. I can guarantee that call on OEL was due to his past as a Florida Panther. The Lightning was almost gifted the game but the buds held firm and we were able to go home happy. Giving thanks for this win.
Ekman-Larsons penalty was even more annoying to watch if you saw the few seconds before the whistle went. The TB defender swung his stick and hit OEL in the back of the knee making him lose footing. Thats why he retaliated but when they kept talking about it on the broadcast they kept not rewinding the replay far enough so it looked like OEL did it for no reason
It would be nice if the NHL could acknowledge their refs aren’t perfect omnipotent beings who make no mistakes. Or, as you put it Steve, treat the fans like adults instead of gas lighting.
I was watching the game with my Grandma and may or may not have scared her a little with my reaction to Robertson’s goal, I literally threw my hands in the air (almost threw my phone) and went YES!!!!!! Then started laughing.
The crosscheck was retaliation for a slash to Eckland-larrson's calf. That's why it was called. I agree the second cross-check was retalliatory and should have drawn a penalty also. I'm sure Kadri and Wilson will be fined for these infractions. That"s officiating in the nhl. Mitch would be ok in net. Having the highest scoring player does not guarantee a first place team or a cup. Hockey is a TEAM sport. One nothing is a win. Better to have two guys score 50 than one scoring 69.
