- If your looking for the best do-it-all enduro, this is it! Review, Walkaround, Reliability, Performance, DRZ 400 S, not supermoto. best dual sport. better than crf250l, crf300l, klx250, klx300, wr250r
Got my 2023 Champion Yellow in the barn waiting for the snow to melt. Can’t go wrong with the DR-Z400!
Great info! I already decided in the DRZ for all the reasons you mentioned. Supposed to buy it tomorrow!
How you liking it?
Sold my 2017 ninja 636 and bought a 2006 drz400sm with 3500 miles on it. Best choice I ever made! Funnest bike ever! And bullet proof!
That's awesome man! Yeah I've had a few ninjas too but I'd take a drz if I had to choose between em. True freedom
Makes me feel good about my decision. I was kinda wishing I got a ninja 650 for my first bike instead of the drz
@@11dremoss first time you see traffic bad and ride across a dirt field to get where your going , youll be be happy you didn't get the ninja.
@@howdy4596 lol for sure
Had a KLX, got a DRZ. DRZ wins for sure. For anyone that has issues with a carb, hasn’t had enough time on either bike to compare them. Sure I have to pull a choke sometimes, but my EFI KLX from the factory had issues with starting after running for a while and taking a 5 minute break. It was cheaper to modify my fueling on the DRZ, too. Old school 2-stroke carbs had issues, especially once ethanol was introduced, but my DRZ has zero issues. The key is to ride it occasionally and not let it sit for a year or tinker with the fueling when it is running good *cough* lectron *cough*. I thought the same thing about the carb and 6th gear whenever I bought the KLX over the DRZ initially, but once I bought the DRZ, I regretted buying the KLX in the first place. Ultimately the DRZ platform is capable of producing more power than the KLX for the same mods. I had fun on both bikes, but the better power to weight ratio wins in the woods, up until you hit 400lbs of weight. That is why you see guys riding light weight 2 strokes that have more HP than a DRZ!
PS mine is the SM, in which I have dual sport tires on 17s, which is a blast on and off-road. Much more fun than the KLX. Change the sprockets to give it a little better woods bias and it’s a more fun bike than the S model on and off road.
Yes exactly! Great post man!
@@bikesandbangs The KLX 300 has great suspension and EFI....
@@johnganshow5536 Yeah, if you live in California you have to go with EFI because you can only get carb-gumming E10 fuel. If Suzuki went with EFI then I would get one.
I only use e10 for gas in this bike, runs perfectly, never had any issues
Isn't the drz a klx pretty much anyways?
Great review. I own a 2020 DRZ400SM and it’s a blast to ride. I’m very happy I decided to go with it over a 250 Honda, Kawasaki, or Yamaha. Even though Honda and Kawasaki have the 300’s now, i still would choose the DRZ400 because of the power and performance.
Good info! I'm a late 50s guy beginning rider and want to just play around on the road and explore some trails. I m not gonna go blasting through trails or jumps or wheelies. Just looking to have a little bit of fun. Can't decide on the drz400 or the Honda cfl300 rally.
Can't find either bike right now but taking beginner course in a couple months.
Well the drz has the ability to conquer almost anything off-road. You can adjust the suspension to be capable of Motocross size jumps. It was world's more low end torque and power than the Hondas do. But if you'll be doing more street riding with just the occasional woods or trail riding, the Rally's are very smooth, have more updated features, and just look better than the drz's. I will say the drz does have a lighter, more nimble feeling when riding. Both are good bikes. With the market the way it is right now, I'd just buy the first one you find lol
Thanks so much mate, after not being on a bike for a long long time, it was leaning towards ag klx300 due to efi but it doesn't does not even have a kick start and like you said buy the time you upgrade the the 250 300 what ever you will still have a sub standard bike with shocks that bottom out and engine that you have to rev the skata out of
You have saved me I was so dam close to buying the klx 300
Well done
Hey thanks, yeah I went down the 250/300 path and it ended with me getting the drz instead. Much happier now and I can conquer trails and go places the smaller bikes just can't
The throttle and fueling are perfect too.
Well done, an excellent review. Thank you.
I would say it more depends on what the rider wants. The DRZ400 is a great platform but is still a dinosaur today. With it's, 5 speed, 317 lb wet, and carb can make it bit challenging to make a purchase on. I just got the KLX300 and I have to say the DRZ400 is a little bit more powerful but the KLX300 has good midrange as well... and feels way lighter despite only being 15 lbs lighter. It feels more 50 lbs lighter as it has a lower center of gravity... I felt like the DRZ400 was a pig compared to KLX300. WR, KLX, CRF also have FI and 6 gears. The CRF and KLX are 1k cheaper MSRP too. That being I think the DRZ400 is great for someone who is a bit bigger and the heavier and more upward weight doesnt bug them
At least drz still built in japan. New klx300 are india unfortunately. Im all for 351 klx big bores, its about same cost/power as drz stock.
Dude u have exellent taste and are very well spoken. I have a 20 drz 400 with the typical mods. 3x3 skidplate etc. This bike rips ! I come from a moto x background and this bike feels like a moto bike to me. Sure its a bit heavy compared to a modern 2 stroke but anyone over 40 should have there ass in the gym 4 x a week so get some strength u complaining wussies😁
I just love your drz I would like to know what year and did the graphics came on or did you replace them. But it looks damn good and I would like mine to look like your can you help? Thank for the video want to see more
Mine is a 2015 and I put those graphics on the factory plastics. Here is the exact kit I got

Thanks for your help I have a 2021 drz and I had the side protectors and the frame guards better tires bigger break lines head model to led and a crowling and 3x3 cut out on air intake with exhaust and reset on carb and this thing rips please make more videos just love you style peace out
Great motorcycle bro love my 2019 drz 200s great motorcycle bro
I just watched a review where the guy had a DRZ and got the KTM350 and he said the engine has all kinds of buzz and he thinks he got a bad bike but I guess that bike is just like that. He did say that the bike is light and wants to go faster than he normally rides the DRZ but the KTM is a lot lighter. I think for the money there's no doubt I'll get a DRZ400 or a DR650 because those are the most popular bike in Australia today and they cost half or less as a KTM the Honda CRF450RL is 9,999 that's insane. I think my first bike will be a DRZ. Nice video did you change all of your stickers? Looks good!
Yes it's a factory fx kit, $74 on ebay. Every color u could think of. Yeah I think thes drz's are an amazing bang for your buck!
Wouldn't trade mine for one of those new 300s.
They feel anemic compared to the DRZ and i'm only 200lbs.
A useless 6th gear and EFI just arent worth it.
Also.. complaining about the weight just means they cant pick up their own bike lol
That's what I'm saying haha uk what's up
Great Video! Thanks for Sharing! What year is your DRZ?
2015
Nice information thanks 👍🏻can I ask whether you are the fella out of Zombieland ?😁
Lol I've been called Woody harrelson before so I guess the hat pry topped it off. Might have to watch that tonight
@@bikesandbangs I love your work especially Zombieland 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻😁
Love my drz 200s
Nice video.
The main reason the DRZ has remained somewhat popular even though its design and technology is antique is none of the other big 4 Asian manufactures has really produced a single cylinder dual sport within the same size and class with decent service intervals, close to the same power and weight and within the the same price structure as the DRZ 400.
The new 300cc dualsports are much closer but still slightly behind on the power but I predict soon that someone, perhaps Yamaha as they still have not announced their 250 replacement will build a 350cc or so dual sport with FI and 6 speed tranny and around the same price point and then the DRZ 400 will be extinct.
Also what you consider better is very subjective. Over the last 4 or so decades of the Japanese 4 it has usually been a debate between whether Honda or Yamaha had the best build quality and fit and finish with Honda usually having a slight edge.
Then it was between Kawasaki and Suzuki for next on the list and bottom of the barrel and many times it was a toss up but when you look around there always seems to be a lot more old Kawasaki's still in service and for older bikes you see fewer Suzuki's still going which speaks not only for their popularity but their longevity as well.
Personally my opinion is the price Suzuki is charging for 20 year old technology that lacks even a 6 speed transmission is one of the worst value purchases on the currently available dual sport market.
Now if Suzuki were pricing this more powerful little larger antique bike the same as the smaller. lighter current modern 300cc machines then you have an argument why it may be a good buy.
Otherwise you are just seeing why Suzuki is in such financial trouble and really have not released any significantly all new modern technology motorcycles in quite some time. With their current problems it would not surprise me that not only will the DRZ 400 and the DR650 soon be gone but all of the Suzuki motorcycle division.
With new mandates coming a LOT of bikes will be dropped and made. Also, meaning any Tuners will be banned and no mods period.
Yes and no. You're right about the DRZ being in a market on its own. There is nothing out there that can put out the horsepower, reliability and long service intervals at the price. The new 300's have some benefits over the DRZ but lack the torque. Is the DRZ perfect? not at all. the main issue being the lack of a 6th speed but can be rectified with a wide ratio gearbox. The carb is no issue for me. If tuned correctly, it starts fine and has a more direct throttle feel than modern on / off EFI's.
In regards to Suzuki not updating their bikes, yes they are guilty of that. They build solid bikes from the first model that have very few problems like KTM's. I own both the 2017 DRZ400E with 16000km and a 2016 GSXR750 with 26000km and both have been bullet proof. Would I like to own a KTM690, you bet but can't deal with the problems that will lye ahead.
Will Suzuki have to update the DRZ an DR. I think that they will have to for the new emission and abs requirements. The KLR has been updated but is now heavier and more expensive.
If going on a long adventure ride here in Australia, you will see more DRZ and DR than any other bike for a good reason.
@@EricBanner571 ACT 100WRSZ1 wide ratio gear set - very tempting if I kept it no problem splitting cases. I think the bike will be dropped all together with the 650 both. Yamaha be nice if they would build a 450 I would buy that.
@@mt1885 Yes, I would not split the case unless I was building a beast of a motor but it's there as an option. I hope that Suzuki don't drop the DRZ and or DR as they still sell well and are priced well for those not wanting to spend double for the KTM's. The CRF300 is a different market more for entry level riders so there will be a gap if they are dropped.
I bought a KLX 250 over the DRZ mostly because of the front suspension and it is a bit lighter and cheaper. But I've recommended the DRZ to other people. It all depends on your particular type of riding. The DRZ is definitely better at high speeds (say highway), and has more low end if you don't want to manage the motor as much.
I'd like to see three things on a redesigned DRZ; fuel injection, upside-down (inverted) forks, and bump it up to 450 cc's as that seems to be the evolving standard. If Kawasaki moves into the space with a KLX 450 the DRZ is probably done, so it makes sense for Suzuki to hit that market. The DRZ 400 isn't "midpoint" anymore, it is just a small 450.
Yes you're right! We pry will see the 400 size die out when all the brands eventually move to 300, 450, and maybe a 700 too. They have inverted forks on the DRZ super moto and I always wondered why they didn't do that on the drz400s. Oh well, standard forks are easier to rebuild so I guess that's a plus. Anything with 2 wheels is still fun tho and I love my Kawasaki's! Thanks for the good post Art!
@@bikesandbangs "Anything with 2 wheels is still fun tho" - true. If you get off a DRZ and you ain't smiling there is something wrong with you.
Almost bought a DRZ... ordered a CRF300L instead. With new suspension on the 300 it feels and rides so much better than the DRZ all while being cheaper...
You spelled Honda CRF300l wrong!
I thought the DR 350 was a better bike . Lighter , 3 ponies lower for h.p. and no coolant required.
The dr350's are great bikes, just very hard to find, at least where I'm at. I do typically prefer air cooled bikes, but for the dirt and trail riding I do, it's not uncommon for me to stay in high rpm's in a low gear for awhile. And I've gotten a few air cooled dirt bikes heat soaked and they start to bog down in the middle of summer. But I would totally buy a dr350 if I saw one for sale. Great platform, minimal parts, reliable, and I love to have a kickstarter. Definitely buy one if you can find a good one!
How tall are you , I'm curious about your height, because I'm 5'8 and If it's too tall for me
I'm 6'0", it's pry gna be to tall unless u dial down the suspension all the way. U would pry need a lowering link but who knows. See if u can find a dealer with one and jump on
I'm 5-9, it's fine......
I'm in Ohio will the cold affect the drz ?
I'm in Nebraska, it handles the cold just fine. Pull out that choke and it starts instantly even in freezing weather
@@bikesandbangs nice thanks !
What does sitting on a lazy boy mean. I bet hes sat on a few.
Have you modded your DRZ at all?
Just a slip on exhaust as far as performance
What tires on the DRZ you got?
Sedona MX907 HP
They r a hard terrain desert tire, I've found that these don't get eaten up by pavement as fast as softer dirt tires. They typically last me 2000 miles a set riding a mix of street, dirt, and rocky terrain
@@bikesandbangs where dis you find your plastique kit? Because it's gorgeous and i want to change the stock one!
It's just a graphics kit on the stock plastics. Here is the exact one
