I had a 2021 KLX300 (it became available locally first; I'd have taken either). My buddy got the CRF300L and addressed the suspension. So, take the suspension out of it. I rode both back to back on sandy single track. Pushing it on the single track, there's something about frame geometry and the way the bikes carry their weight or something. The KLX was heaps better off road, in my opinion, end of story. That being said, the CRF is probably the better overall bike, if you're going to do more mixed riding with more time on the road. Also, I witnessed what you mentioned about how the Honda is less robust when crashing off road. My KLX was dropped several times with nothing breaking, while my buddy had to replace rear brake lever, gear selector, and the rear plastics from crashes. Light crashes. But here's a real concern: I had problems with my KLX. It spent time in the shop with electrical gremlins. My buddy's CRF has been reliable. I replaced my KLX300 with a CRF450L and CRF250RX and have absolutely no regrets. So, maybe the KLX is the better more dirt capable dual sport, but the Honda is most likely the more reliable and better well-rounded bike.

I'm on a DRZ400S and I don't feel confident off road on trails as I feel like its a heavy tank. Do you have any experience between the DRZ400s and the KLX300 on how it will "Feel" off road? I know, less power, and I would miss that but I'm not a speed demo and would love more confidence & control. Thoughts?

I don’t have any off road experience on a DRZ so I have no real basis for comparison. Sorry. I would assume that the KLX300 is easier off road because it’s lighter and not as tall, but I can’t confirm that, it’s merely speculation.

@@KenRupin The DRZ400S is top heavy and dangerously so. Seat height is too high. There's no fixing the top heaviness of the DRZ400S, I've tried. The motor sits too high in the bike. The frame and ergonomics of the DRZ400S need a whole new design. Sorry, but these are the facts, not my opinion. The DRZ400S is dangerously top heavy. Until Suzuki addresses this problem, I would avoid the DRZ400S.

@@KenRupin i have a klx300 and like it off road not so much on road. I still think it is a little to heavy. My friend has the drz400. (I learned riding on that one). The 400 is more powerful. I love the power of it (wheelies). However it feels a lot heavier. I use it in the mountains of east Tennessee and in the tight turn in the mud it is more sloppy. Thats where I feel the weight. For my next one I am thinking of the ktm 500. It is lighter and more powerful than the dzr and klx. But is more expensive. Another opinion i am think is the w450f and make it street legal. Ktm is the best choice for me. I just have to keep on saving.

Fellow Romanian here. I own a Yamaha WR250F. Love it but it has its limitations, like not being street legal, fuel range pretty low, and the noise it makes. I recently bought a used Honda CRF250L with 9000 km on the clock. Bought the CRF with the intention to sell the Yamaha. But guess what, I no longer intend to sell my blue love. The two bikes complement each other in the sense that one excels on the dirt and the other is more all-rounded. When I want to do some workouts and get all the muscles activated, then it’s Yamaha time. If I want to explore the nature and ride longer distances, then it’s time for the plush Honda. Love your comment about being too old for being uncomfortable:) Would be great to meet you in person if you plan to come to Romania any time soon. Cheers!

I made a touring bike out of my Yamaha. It has a steering damper, 4.7 gallon tank, heated grips, heated seats concepts seat. Hope to do the Trans America trail with it. The Yamaha will pull all day on the highway. 350 watt stator is what makes it a touring bike. Pretty sure it's motor will have the longest life span.

People say the wr250r doesn’t have any low end grunt but imo it’s got plenty of it. I’ve driven all 3 and I like the Wr most. Also, the Wr has more power but not by as much as people make it seem it just rips harder past around 6000 rpm. I will say the suspension on all 3 is decent but the Wr suspension is a lot more adjustable than I expected it to be, like you can feel small adjustments. The Honda feels easier to ride on the trails. The klx is honestly better than I expected for a Kawasaki and is a good middle ground between the CRF and WR 😂.. I slightly prefer the WR so that’s why I bought the newest one I could find. That said I almost got the KLX. I happened to find a 2021 Wr in 2023 with 170 miles on it so ended up getting it. I rode true MX bikes before the dual sport and I’ll say I’m very impressed with the WR suspension and that’s what matters to me probably more than anything else and I actually like the way the WR revs as opposed to the others. I did also ride a Honda 250L and it was too slow in my opinion I could def tell a the klx and wr was faster and felt a lot faster. That said the 250L is probably the most reliable of them. I will also say ABS doesn’t belong off road

Thanks for your post. I appreciate how you kept the price reasonable, as it's not practical for me to spend loads on a bike when an entry level can still get me out there and work on my skill. I'm looking to buy my first bike as an adult and though I want track specific, I feel like my 15 minute commutes may see more action than the occasions I can get away due to family with kids and wife etc. I too have blue in my blood, from growing up nostalgia. Time and time again it doesn't seem like the option, and still using old technology. All that to say I'm curious what you'd think with KTM or Husq. I see a hand full more of KTM, here in the Midwest, so that may be an option to pay a touch more for it's quality. I'd love to know your thoughts. Thanks!

I've got about 1,200 miles of heavy off road riding on my 2022 KLX300 at this point. I'm also a sucky rider, so it's definitely slammed into the ground way too many times. My other bikes are a DR200, TW200, and DRZ125L, so I can't compare to the CRF300. The big things I noticed on KLX was it took me forever to find the sweet spot on the suspension, but it's great both onroad and off road once you find it. The seat sucks, but a Mad Dog seat cover with 1/2" of bouncy packing foam cut to fit under it corrected the issue completely (attached the seat cover with paracord and cut off the plastic connectors). I have had zero issues, other than a fork leak which happened in the first couple hundred miles. Cleaned it out and put seal savers on...zero issues since. The other thing which I've noticed, and others have told me about, is the KLX300 seems a little front heavy. Maybe it's just me, but steep gravely or rocky downhills don't feel so stable. The bike's exhaust isn't pretty, but with some Tusk panniers and a rear rack on it, I've kind of forgotten about the silver terd sticking out of the plastics. I live in Northern Nevada, so my riding conditions are horrible desert horse trails, old mine roads, and occasional cross country through sage and/or pine forests. So far, given the options, I've got zero buyers remorse. Oh, and I changed the rear gearing to a 42, which, at least in my mind, gave me a very slight bit of help on the trails.

    Pretty solid breakdown.
I think I'm leaning towards the 300L rally for the bigger tank and the little windshield. To me, it's worth the extra little bit of weight and I'll take that squishy suspension.

If you do much riding on the pavement, you will really like the Rally wind screen. I owned a 250L Rally and the only reason I sold it was the tank shape flared too wide too quickly which made me have to spread my legs really wide when sitting against the tank which made my hips hurt.

For me, at only 20 to 30 lbs more, I would pick up a moded DR650. Tons more power and torque, and arguably as or more reliable. The DR650 suffers the same soft suspension but is so much better at duel sporting, so much better on road. And the aftermarket is better than all 3 of your picks. I got my '06 in 2013 for $2100, put another $4k into it. I have 2 set of wheels; knobbies for light Enduro (yes), and some Shinko 705s for duel sport adventures. I'm 55yrs old and I wreck it and pick it up all day long. Good to catch up on one of your video's my brother.

I rode a dr650 while back it was pushing 400 pounds with skid plate handguards and rack in the back , and those last 50-60 lbs make a huge difference, power is irrelevant, I'm trying to slow down not go faster. The little dr200 was such a disappointment and the DRZ was so meah , i kind of wrote off the Suzuki off the list entirely . I'm glad you are happy with your bike, if it works for you it all that matters

What does the DR650 weigh? Low 300's Lbs should be a goal for the 300ish bikes. Yamaha Aluminum frame wizardy should easily do anything Kawasaki does with less weight. I'd want 2 cylinders, Water Cooled, EFI.. B+ adjustable suspension at least mid 30's HP. The CP2 is perfect.. maybe a different set of trans gears.. but wow.. Come on Yamaha.. you got this.. I'd pay KLX prices for this.

Great discussion. I bought the CRF300L because it became available locally so I jumped on it. I ended up putting a K-Tech rear shock on it. I bought their front spring, but haven't swapped it yet. I decided to put all the performance upgrades that you see on youtube. I just ordered the Yohi slip-on, the DNA high performance air filter, and the EJK tuner. Yeah, it's costing some money, but I'm looking forward to what it will be when I'm done. I also dumped the stock tires for a D606 rear and a Pirelly MT21 front.
If I dump enough money into it, I won't have to rely on my skills... LOL!!!

Nothing wrong with those bikes. They are all tools for individual purposes. I could have purchased the crf250, wr250r and still bought the DRZ400E that is still available new here in Australia. I thought I may keep it for a year or two and then upgrade to a KTM690r. But 5 years later, 20,000km later, I still have it and am surprised at how good it is for a 20 year old design. Why? It weighs less than the crf250 144kg and only 4 kg heavier than the wr250R. The DRZ is known for being built proof with some doing over 100000km without a piston change. The suspension is much better than the Honda and on par with the Yamaha. Absolutely nothing wrong with the carb if jetted correctly for the elevation. 5 speed gearbox but if geared 15/44 can do 100km all day. On a light dual sport with knobbies, you would not want to travel much faster. The DRZ has such a large following for a reason.

Test rode a KLX 250 a while back but just on asphalt to see if the power would be sufficient on these small 250ccs. It did fine, but what bothered me was the damn thing looked like a moped but at the same time I was too short for it. The only colour available in Sweden is also that glossy black thing that also doesnt do the bike justice. Now all dual sports are pretty rare here but i managed to find a CRF250L after a test ride which im super happy with, everytime i open the garage door it makes me smile and power isnt too after a gearing change.

The bigger gas tank would be beneficial for distances and the extra plastics for protection but off-road they both would be hinderances (extra weight and more plastics to break if dropped). For offroading i would think upgrading to barkbusters/swivel levers all around plus case guards you should be fine for reliability in the boonies.I think about that i would like ABS too being on the road as much as i am but its not available in the CRF in my country haha...like you say less options is sometimes better, just go ride instead and enjoy. Money! Yes this is the big deciding factor for me. Used, absolutely there are great bikes out there that don't get ridden much. What do you want to ride? Well it does have to fit the Dualsport mode for me. I have one that fits this description and I have ridden it for many years. It's way too heavy when it comes to the offroad side. I think you are right on looking at the smaller motors. What you loose in raw power you will more than makeup in handling. I have always wished I had a lighter bike that was more offroad capable. I would have been ok with sacrificing some of how good it was on road. I would be leaning towards that KLX. Great description of the qualities of these bikes.

For me, weight is a more important "comfort" thing than the seat. Off road, I find that I feel more beat up and uncomfortable the heavier the bike. Obviously suspension is a huge factor, and I agree that the Honda has a more plush ride, but it's not like the KLX suspension is crazy stiff or anything. I really like the Kawasaki klx as the engine and frame is over engineered and they make a big bore kit upto 351cc though I run a 331cc kit in mine which gives roughly wr250 peak hp with more bottom end torque! I bought mine new in 2005 and only recently undertaken its first ever top end rebuild at 56,000 miles! I really think Kawasaki need to turn this into a 350cc bike by rebalancing the crank to suit 350 piston and resign the cylinder head to flow more air! That being said I think from the information I've read and looking at the specs I think the crf300 would handle the open road better and be a little bit smoother I think being based of the cbr engine would back this statement!

I ride with a guy who has a KLX230 and it treats him well. The CRF soft suspension was a concern of mine, but you make a good point, just go a little slower on the rough stuff and enjoy a smoother ride. I'd like a dual sport that can sometimes be a very light adventure bike (load up a little camping gear) so that makes an adjustable suspension sound appealing but to be honest my road bike has adjustable rear suspension and I rarely adjust it. Another big CRF concern is the "flameout" issue. Maybe its less of an issue than I would think since you don't talk about it a lot. Some people have claimed to have needed a new ECU to deal with the issue. I don't want that kind of extra cost and that pushes me more towards KLX, green or otherwise.

Hi from Romania! Just sold my WR250R after owning it for almost 3 years, loved that bike so much and I sometimes tell myself i should've not sold it. But I did it because lately I was riding around 70% street and 30% offroad.. and while that 30% offroad riding is very important, I said to myself I can't keep the WR in my garage while I'm riding twice as much onroad than off.. My dream bike now is the Yamaha Tenere 700 ( World Raid edition would be even more lovely ), but my budget now is around 5 grand.. the T7 is around 8 so far.. so i've got to wait a bit more untill I can get my hands on one. Started thinking what about another dualsport while waiting for the T7, and CRF300L looked promising but nah.. it's no improvement from the WR250R, just newer and better looking.. it's not worth it.. Late to the party, and I do love the Hondas, but suspension also does matter, even if you’re not doing anything technical, IMO. I have a friend that decided to go for the 250 Rally. He is not a heavy guy at all, but the ass was dragging on that bike in a ridiculous way. He had to have used up 50-60% of the sag. When I got on it, it was a total joke.
Apparently you can’t even swap out the spring in the Honda. But with appropriate suspension work (which means throwing away the entire rear shock, and possibly the forks) I think the Honda is a no-brainer. I actually kind of want a 300 Rally (even though I have a DRZ with spring upgrades front and rear). I’ll possibly never understand why Honda decided to go with such a comically weak and non-serviceable suspension on that series of bikes when everything else on them is so good.

@@vegasromaniac I don't know what you mean another dirt bike? What was this whole video about? It was about getting a dual sport. The wr250r is a dual sport and it's not so problematic as you made it all sound in your video. It's probably a superior bike all around and has no deficiencies that can't be addressed compared to the other two bikes. You're starting to sound very confused🤔🤣

based upon your parameters, or anyone who is looking with a similar set of requirements in mind, if you don't have a preconceived bias, then i suggest you check out the lifan kpx 250 dual sport bike that can be bought here in the u.s. and is fifty state legal...it has efi and is air cooled, with 20hp at 7500rpm and 20.5nm of torque at 5000rpm. keep in mind its a 250cc compared to the japanese 300cc bikes...so while slightly a step down from the japanese bikes, its by far the best chinabike and lifan has a decent track record and parts availability, having been selling bikes in the states since the 80s or something(i am not affiliated with lifan in any way, just.think they offer a solid and cheap alternative for beginners and other budget conscious folk)

@@andersd8956 obviously you have a preconceived bias, no worries , my post was for those that do not...while many chinabikes are chintzy for sure, there are some that are made at a higher standard, like lifan's bikes, loncin(voge), zongshen(csc motos) and cfmoto are the other companies that seem to be quality made as well...anyway, if you happen to not be open to them for whatever reason, no worries , however because they are much more affordable than the alternatives, it is good info to know for many of us looking to buy a new bike and not a used one....

    2012-2015 WR450F
Not street legal in the USA but is in Australia. Has the bulletproof 5 valve engine, fuel injected, aluminum frame. Tons of power…more oil changes than the WR250R but almost 3x the power.
Out of the ones you listed…It’s hard to beat the CRF300L

You know I had a street legal 2008 WR250F for almost 3 years and it was quite horrible on the road Yes it was fast but the 1.7 gallon tank was just terrible and then when I put a bigger tank on it it just ruined it off-road also I put a rear rack on it and then I couldn't mount the bike properly so it was a great dirt bike that I horribly mutilated to be able to go on the road with it and it just became this nonsense

wr450f is nowhere near bulletproof, they're the opposite hence why you don't see them doing any long distance work in aus.

I would go with for your type of riding the Honda 300l over the klx300 and the klx300 over the 250l also the 250l over the klx250. As you said the honda fits you better.
