As a Baby Boomer, these movies held little interest to me, but now, at 70, I find them charming, entertaining and full of wonderful characters. It was a time before me, and hinted at a society, with all its flaws, that is preferable to the shallow, grubby conflicting world that has no values, no patriotism and no standards, in which we live.
A gem of Classic cinema... Both Cagney and Olivia showed their abilities for comedy wonderfully. And Rita was great too expressing how Virginia changed its personality as time passed...
Beautiful era of golden actors like Jimmy & Olivia, these people have not & will not be replaced, this film is to be treasured, nostalgia at it's most genuine🎥😢😊
I am a man I was born in 1976 I saw Olivie de Havilland for the first time in the movie Captain Blood from 1935. Her appearance in the film was not only the appearance of an excellent actress but also an amazing beautiful girl when she was 19 years old she was young and beautiful actually hypnotized me You can it was possible to fall in love with her without memory at first sight. This film, due to her amazing beauty, not only spiritual, but also beauty, was deep in the mine mind. As soon as the news of her death appeared, I immediately remembered her actor creation in this film. Olivio died for the world I can only write rest in peace for me and for many other fans who love your by film creations you will live forever and you will always remain in our memory Robert from Poland
Mrownica you have written a beautiful tribute to the wonderful film legend, Olivia de Havilland. The passing of this incredible Hollywood mega movie star is truly an end of an era. Olivia was a brilliant, beautiful, amazingly talented, strong, classy woman who’s illustrious film career will remain legend. May she shine peacefully among heaven’s stars! 🌟 ✨ 💫 ❤️

Nicely said. I too am a Gen X and git hooked on this era of Movie when i was a young teenager. I agree with all your comments about Olivia. I absolutely adore Rita Hayworth and have seen all her movies (most of Olivia’s also). Wish times were still like this. Seems you and i were born at the wrong moment in time.
This 1890s/1900s nostalgia in Films like this one, "Ah, Wilderness" and "Meet Me in St. Louis" is quite interesting - a bit comparable to nostalgia for the 1950s to 1980s in the Films of today
The 'strawberry blonde' refers to the girl he idolized in the beginning but did NOT marry. (the Rita Hayworth character) He wound up with Amy (Olivia de Havilland) and she was the best!!
His mom was also a strawberry blonde! She & his father would dance to this song! So...Cagney asked if she could be in the film & she is, I believe, walzing to the song! 😊 (-James Cagney, ‘Cagney by Cagney’)
Even Marlon Brando admired James Cagney acting, because of his natural ability. He also felt the same way about Paul Muni acting, who doesn't get enough credit; but i guess if you're getting credit like that from another great actor, that's the only credibility that 👍🏻 you need. " Thumbs up to these classic movies."
Raymond Shutt I just came across your comment. How wonderful you found your own Olivia to share your life with. I hope you've been enjoying a very happy first year as man and wife! Thank you for you kind wish of God's blessings for Ralph and I. I wish the same for you and your Olivia! 💕
Ralph has a few years on Mike so Cagney has been Ralph's idol before Mike was born! The man is obsessed! LOL! In any case, both Ralph & I are huge Fox fans & are saddened his dream to play Cagney hasn't come to fruition - he would've been terrific. Travolta was another Cagney fan who also hoped for the opportunity to play him but for some reason, it never panned out. Don't know of any other triple threats who would do Cagney justice but hopefully, we'll live to see the day.
In order for any actor to successfully play James Cagney in a biopic, he'd have to be at least as charismatic or more so than the original. Cagney himself was more charismatic than George M. Cohan, whose biopic won him the Oscar. George C. Scott was more charismatic than George S. Patton, whose biopic won him an Oscar. To do Cagney, you'd not only have to be as good a tap dancer as Cagney (because tap dancing was essential to Cagney's life story) but you'd have to have charisma that leaps off the screen.
I believe James Cagney asked Michael J. Fox to play him but don't know what happened either James couldn't get the script ready or Michael couldn't commit. As we know, Michael is a real gentleman and would not have Mr. Cagney wait. However, it could have been due to his Parkinson Disease that came on during the time he was playing Marty in "Back to the Future." It's too bad because Michael was the only charismatic actor that could play Cagney after all. In case you are curious, I read that somewhere on the internet about Michael J. Fox being asked by James Cagney to portray him in his biography.
I wouldn’t trade this precious pair & film for any modern film today!!! “And that’s the kind of a hairpin I am!” ❤️👏🏻❤️👏🏻🙌🙌
He's so adorable!

Well that was George Reeves who took a shot to the jaw.... 1:05
I loved James Cagney movies! I wish Michael J. Fox had the chance to play him in a remake.
Great scene!

so ... impossible ... Cagney is perfect ... no wasted motion as I think, the great Orson Welles said of him ...

That means no go for this generation. I thought maybe DiCaprio, but he is too old now.
