This is the best set of instructions that I have seen. And LOVE the serger method. Great teacher too!! Thanks for sharing with all of us. Now we can do our part to help our healthcare providers.
Thanks for this video! I have been making very nice masks but they take a while to do on a regular sewing machine, so many steps! Someone was throwing away a brother serger 1034D, said it was broken. Well the upper looper was broken, shank attachment missing, needle plate missing and sewing foot as well! Oh and the timing was off! Well I successfully fixed it after buying the upper looper. Now I just ordered the rest of the parts. I always wanted to use a serger and now I own one :D
Hi, Jan. I was looking for a way to use my serger for the masks and the first video was you, my favorite store owner! How nice. I used my Baby Lock Victory yesterday and was able to make these quickly and hassle free. Thanks for the clear directions. I'm boxing these up to send your way .
I am new to serger, and casual see machine user. When my machine died (passed down by my grandmother), I bought a serger, and excited to see what can be done. Please, do more videos with sergers. I've always wanted one, so finally! I will have to buy a new machine, but without a standard machine, I will be forcing myself to learn this serger! Please, more videos on sergers!
thank you for this. I do this, then when it's right side out I top stitch the top, bottom , and add a nose wire channel which I leave open at the sides. People can't see well over the mask (when looking down) when it's not top stitched .I have had luck with feeding the thick wire through the thread, and have more flexibility with masks when I have the removable wire channel. If I was using cheaper thin wire, I might try this method though.
You are a joy to watch the only thing I would probably add would be to do a top stitch along the top and bottom to keep it from distorting because you dont want to keep touching it before applying it
I wish I could hug you. this for me is the best I've made. I've seen and scrolled and liked this but didn't like that. Thank you Lord. thank you for great instructions..
Great video!! I have Babylock serger. LOVE IT and can’t do without it. It was a girlfriend who told me I needed one. Thanks again for a great video. I’ve subscribed.
It has been said that the wire is required over the nose but an opening across the front has to be accessible for a special "filter" to be inserted in between the front and back of the mask. Cotton fabric is ok for front and back but the special filter is required if you are making the masks for Surgical masks. For personal use the mask you just made is fantastic. Never thought about making it on my surger LOL GREAT VIDEO and Thank YOU. Yup BABY LOCK is the BEST and I originally bought the 4 spool and traded it in by working my way up to the 8 thread Baby Lock!!!
Ok, new to the channel, but I'm loving it. This sister isn't messing around. Get those masks made mama! LOL Unfortunately, I don't have a surgery, so I won't be able to bust these out that fast, but these tips are very helpful.
Agree, great tutorial! Anyone have instructions on how to do this with *elastic* and the serger? I follow up through that part, but don't feel that was explained as much as it could have been
Amazing, thank you. I'm going to put two layers of polyester chiffon in my masks like AARP suggests to make it more like an N95 mask. I just bought a serger again (had one for years), now I have to dig out my sewing machine to finish the edge on this mask. Thanks, stay well.
You MUST crimp the ends of the wire!!! Bend with pig-nosed pliers and curl , then pinch! Run the elastic through the side folds!, around the nape of the neck and back of the head! Leave the bottom open to insert a filter.... add an inch to the bottom of the pattern, clean finish. Insert filter... I am using a cut in half coffee filter; the medical community can do whatever they seem suitable! I am using cheap floral wire for the nose pinch wire! Be sure to use no pins!= holes! Line/ interline with nonwoven Pelon featherweight or such!
I just bought my first serger yesterday! The Janome air serger. This design looks awesome. My only concern is the wire moving or coming out since it’s just pushed through the stitches. I use a rope for my ties and and lay the end down and then do my stitch so I don’t have to pull it though after. Saves a lot of time! I also see right enough around it there is no worry of it pulling through.
I hold my wire in place on the inside top and turn the mask right side out, then topstitch below the wire. I couldn't get it in the stitches consistently.
Okay this is my favorite yet!! This answers all the needs that my husband has requested - ties and a place for a filter. It is also supper easy to make. Also like you I love my serger and will not sew without one. I finally upgraded once I found the Babylock Accolade that will thread itself.
@@msdeedee1808 Hi, I have a Juki and even before I purchased this, I've wanted a baby loc but funds said no.. I have a baby loc sewing machine and love it.:)
Great video! Missing my serger so much I purchased an eBay serger to use till I can get back to my sewing cave. Subscribed for a lot of reasons . I really appreciate you using four different colors in the sample. Seems simple right? But yours is the first video where somebody has taken into consideration consideration people like myself who confuse easily when trying a task for the first time. Just made a bucket hat with mesh insert on a serger. No lining needed as the seams are just beautiful. Thanks again.
You just fixed my last 3 days of frustration!!! I’ve been making the masks so slow, as I’m a new sewer. I just got a new serger last 5 days ago, but was unsure how to incorporate it. But thanks to you, now I know!! Now, I can make so many more than I have been. Thank you again!
Debbie Bond I have the same question. Does the elastic slip through the opening and then tie??? I hope she answers this since 9 of us are wondering. :-)
I fold the raw ends over twice, press. Lay elastic or cord over the area then fold, pin. Stitch over the folded edge being careful to not sew the elastic or cord. This is much quicker rather than feeing it through. You can also feed elastic through with tweezers since it’s such a short distance.
Michele Yeager In the sewing video you can see it clearer. After elastic is through, pull the ends together then stitch the two ended to themselves being careful to not stitch them to the material.
That's such a great idea, right?..!!!... and who doesn't have a jar (and a half!) of paperclips on their desk, that never gets used?...!!!.... she's such a SMART Cookie!.... love this tutorial!!!
Get a small klatch together: Parcel out each task, esp. find a faster way to cut out the pieces.....and to former and insert the ties..... Productivity & production can soar, and you can enjoy each other's company.....!
I own a Bernina serger, I asked the shop owner what she had at home (as she sold several brands of sergers including Baby Lock, she said "Bernina". So that is what I bought! Sounds quieter too, auto-threading on your machine is nice, but the quality of the Bernina is unsurpassed.
What’s to keep the wire from sliding from side to side? I can see after it is “nose-pinched” that it wouldn’t move as easily, but seems like it could slide. Thanks for this serger pattern....MUCH faster!
To those questioning the type of filter to use, I was watching someone’s video and she had done a lot of research on the filter material. She was using a high grade AC filter (the one that has a “virus” icon on it. She then cut the wire off the filter, then took off the cardboard casing; now you have the filter material. Put a pressing cloth on top and iron the pleats out. Cut out the pattern and now you have the insert you need.....my thoughts on using a coffee filter, since the water goes through the filter/coffee, then so can the virus....
If you don't cover your wire they will rust in the wash. A simple small cut of duct tape around the wire will suffice. I would also stitch it in because that wire just slid in the serger stiches will move/come loose in the wash.
How much longer are you making the mask versus the first pattern? I love your pattern and the serger is the fastest way to make them. Thank you for the video
I am very new to sewing. I actually just started learning how to quilt about 3 months ago and it’s morphed into sewing other things. I bought a cheap 200 dollar quilting machine. So far I am happy with it. What is the difference between a serger and a sewing machine? If I make the leap to a serger will it act as a sewing machine also?
IMO only. Sergers are great for apparel . For quilting I use my standard sewing machine and have no need of one . Sergers can be difficult to operate and come with their own set of headaches that's why she said to get it out our closet. Don't get me wrong they are miraculous in the right hands .
Just want to let you Ladies Know, I've had great success with Merv14 filters...They're huge and you can easily cut a CPL hundred filters for reusable masks. They can be removed to wash the mask. They, rate at 99.9% protection which is better than n95's.
Yay! Thanks! I’m glad to finally find a serger video for this. Straight forward and to the point!
This is the best design and quickest I've seen yet. Thank you! I agree, I love my serger and wouldn't think of sewing without one.

Wow!! I knew there was an easier way!! This pattern and istructions are the easiest yet! Thank God for sergers and Sew It Online!!
Just got my serger yesterday.. I'm super excited to put it to good use. In never thought of shoe laces. Love this video the instructions are so clear.

Just bought my serger and this video makes me so happy with my decision! I have ribbon and shoe laces and old sheets that I can use for ties. Thanks!
I love it! I have pulled my serger out and I’m going to use it more. Thank you.
I own sergers and this, by far, is the easiest assembly! Way to go and thanks so much! New subby here!
Thank you!!!! I’ve been so busy cutting out masks I haven’t had time to figure out how to use my serger on them. This will save me sooo much time!!!

I was wondering about adding top stitching - thanks for sharing!
I love my Baby Lock. Mine is 20 years old and I wouldn't have any other kind. I had to replace the foot pedal today and it is still working!!!!
Great tutorial and teacher! I have a drapery workroom and industrial sergers and wanted to make masks to donate. THANKS!

I lay the ribbon in and then fold it over and sew. It eliminates having to thread it through.
Me too.

This is the best mask-making method AND the best video out there! THANK YOU!
The best Serger Mask Video I have ever watched, I love it THANK YOU SO MUCH , I have been looking for an air jet air threading Serger.
Great job of directions, appreciate information on both methods and the pattern. Bravo !!
Thank you so much! Brilliant tutorial, great tips for making masks in bulk.
Brilliant wire insertion! 5 stars! Thoughtful construction-teaching! Exemplary business re customer service! You rock!

There is a pocket in it (it is open on each side) to allow the placement of replaceable filters including ones as good or better than N95s.

I LOVE my 5 thread Elna! It has 3 stitches that selfthread and I have had it for over 15 years
I love your tutorial, I have a sergerI love the way it sews, Thanks for the video It is amazing how It works.
thank you very easy and informative video...never knew that a serger was so handy! I'm using a sewing machine but making masks like crazy!
Good video, I've also seen someone use foil food trays and cut small strips and fold in the sharp edges and use that instead of wire.
Best tutorial so far! I’m getting my serger out!
Take a jelly roll strip cut in half lengthwise fold in thirds with zigzag edge on outside. Stitch down length. 2 ties for 2 masks.
About 42 inches.
Thank you so much. My very first serger project. You made this very easy.

Great tutorial! I was using a zig zag stitch over a pipe cleaner for the wire. Love, love the wire through stitches idea!
Enjoyed tutorial, I am excited to make a mask and receive my patterns.
Fabulous tutorial! Thank you! I love the serger. This will make it easy to make and share many masks. They are so needed now. ❤️
I am so glad I found your channel! Thank you for your time !

Yes, but 3 is ok
This,s the best mask pattern on a serger, Thanks for video.

Doesn’t that serger self thread?

hi guys, just a quick note, I toped stiched to top and bottom of the face mask it sits fabulous and looks professional.
Your the Best! I like your technique 👏🏽👏🏽
Excellent pattern, simple & quick. Great tips for efficiency. I Need a kids size Pattern. Thank you!!!! Have a bright day. :)
