    I found your channel about a month ago and love it. I'm not a fisherman, it's not something I particularly enjoy doing myself, but I enjoy 'going fishing' vicariously through you. Your videos are so calming and relaxing; I love watching them throughout the day while working. Keep up the great job! : )

      Dang.... now that's influence! Well said grekit and most interesting! I found a few fishing channels like that, though I do fish and enjoy it (outside of snags heh). I still watch fishing channels and find some of them simply hard to put down. I got a feeling this is going be one more of those channels! Besides he fishes in areas I've spent many years of my life. Have a great 2021 grekit

    I fished the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California for over 20 years and I noticed that most lakes had dams that would be used to release water in the fall so they would have a place to store the snow run off. During the Fall trout spawn and with the lakes being already low from not much run off in the long hot summer you would easily be able to find the channels in the lakes. These channels are were the fish love to stay the water is colder and deeper. Fishing in the fall was the opportune time if you ask me. The Owens River would stretch for over one hundred miles and would carry the water unobstructed down from the lakes and streams. All of the lakes freeze over in the winter and unless you plan to hike in the roads to the lakes might be closed. I fished South Lake, Lake Sabrina, North Lake, Lee Vining area (Twin Lakes), Bridgeport Reservoir, June Lake Loop, Mammoth Lakes, Long lake in the summer time and the Owens River from Bridgeport to Lone Pine. The Golden Trout were more difficult for me as I was at that time a smoker and hiking above 9,000 feet would become difficult. The worst thing I ever did in my life, smoke! I didn't get married until I was 38 and from 22 to 38 I spent every chance I got in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. It was just a 5 hour drive north from where I lived and was nothing to drive after work on Friday night. I caught a lot of Browns some weighing 12+ lbs and a lot of Rainbow. The Brook trout were a little harder to find and although really good eating I practiced catch and release. There were lots of times I would get up there before the snow had melted and would spend days fishing the Owens River. I taught myself how to Fly Fish with some help from Dale and the gang at Mac's Sporting Goods in Bishop, CA. If you guys and girls ever get a chance to spend some time there have a great time and please haul out what you take in plus someone else's, (trash). Over those 20 years the shore lines really became polluted with garbage, Styrofoam worm containers, cans and plastic bottles mostly. This is truly a Fisherman's paradise lets keep it that way! I may have left out a couple of lakes and sorry I didn't mention the streams, there are plenty of those, Rush Run in the June Lake Loop was one of my favorites. Use barbless hooks, makes for an exciting and well deserved catch. Float Tubes are welcome and if you want to use a boat only 10 horse motors are allowed in most lakes. Crowley and June Lake I don't believe have a limit on motor but anything over 25 might be to much for such small lakes.

    Hey Matts I mean no disrespect but when handling a trout, especially a wild one you plan to release it’s best to not take them out of the water or handle them with dry hands. Doing both of those increases mortality rate (unfortunately trout are such a vulnerable fish). Again I only want to help spread info on proper fish handling, I’ve enjoyed your videos for a long time now, much respect.

      @jackandcanon563 5 років тому +4

      @@FishermansLife I was going to say the same thing! Followed your channel for years and love your videos but it pains me to see you handling Trout with dry hands as the oils on human skin can react badly with Trout and more often than not the fish will die as a result. Maybe invest in some light gloves or even just make sure your hands are wet when you handle the fish? Keep up the great videos though!

    • @Dave-jy4wi
      @Dave-jy4wi 5 років тому +1

      Was going to say the same. It was your left hand. You didn’t wet that hand first. It’s not always easy to remember but very important to do. Especially when handling such a beautiful native fish like that cutthroat. Nice catch, btw! Also important to not let them lay on the ground. All this goes out the window if you’re going to eat them though.

      www.ginkandgasoline.com/steelhead/you-may-be-killing-steelhead-and-not-even-know-it/
      Here is a scientific study on the catch and release mortality of Steelhead salmon. Seems it could apply to the different trout species we catch in streams, as well. Just food for thought. Still looking for scientific study data on the claims made in this thread on the brief handling of trout, for photo ops. I have found lots of stories in trout lovers forums, but haven't seen any links to support all these theories about handling trout. Post 'em if you got 'em!

    The best fly is the one that matches what is blooming or flying around where you are. Fish are smart. I was in Yellowstone and watching the insect bloom, i matched my fly to the bloom and bang caught trout in the Madison river all day. When I was in Yosemite same thing. there were black mosquitoes all over the place eating me alive. I matched a fly that was close to these mosquitoes and i caught a trout shortly after. Key is to match what is going on around you. Also you should use bar-bless hooks to preventing damaging the fish you catch and release. I would have thrown my fly on the water fall and let it flow out over the fish in that first place you were fishing. As long as the fish don't see you it should work :)

    I fished up in the High Sierras a couple times. Up at 7,654 feet . I found 3 little lakes and a
    bunch of creeks loaded with trout. Used salmon eggs. About 5 seconds after it hit the water...whacko. Over and over and over. I even used little bitty barbless hooks. Best fresh water fishing ever, for me anyway. Oh yeah, there was a big ass bear sneaking around at night. Apparently his name was Bob The Bear. Be careful.

    One thing I would recommend for beginner fly fisherman is to get some very small gold and silver single hook spoon baits. These are light enough to use with a fly rod and work great in situations where there is enough current to keep them in motion, anywhere a roostertail would normally be effective they preform well.

    You should take a trip out here to Washington my guy. I’m originally from Long Beach cali. I just recently moved up here. I do have a spot here where you can catch big ass steelheads!! I’m not gonna spoil where but if you like to come up here I can show you!! And the view is beyond breath taking!

    My favorite flies to use in high alpine lakes are: Chironomid patterns, Scuds, and mini leeches. And if they’re eating on top then an Amy’s ant and a dropper with a chironomid below. If I don’t see fish then I’ll tie a mini leech on and a scud trailing behind it!
