Great to meet you earlier today! I've been a long-time fan of your channel, and it was awesome to actually sit down and have a conversation with you. Keep up the awesome work you been doing and good luck with all the other cool things you got going on!
matts your what got me into fishing at 7 and here I am about to be 16 your relatibility and approachability will always be appreciated. see you at the fair
Like these camp, fish and cook videos. Appreciate how you keep it real by leveling up about starting a fire. Quality rides in how genuine your love of the outdoors comes through.
There are a few tricks to use an empty Bic lighter to start a fire. Like most things, it gets easier with practice. There are several bushcraft videos that will show you the methods. One such lighter trick was mentioned below. and here's another.. Take your pliers or a pry and remove the childproof guard. Hold the lighter upside down over your toilet paper, or another flat surface and slowly run the wheel several times to scrape some of the ferrocium rod (yes, that's it what makes the sparks) into pile. Once you have a decent amount, strike the lighter as normal. The sparks should ignite the ferro shavings/dust, and they will burn quickly, so have your tinder pile ready, Another trick you can do is to use the back of your knife and scrap off pieces of the lighter itself. This gives you more tinder in a pinch. From what I have found, doing that from the bottom works best. Once you have a pile of plastic shavings, do the same ferro scrape method as above and then strike the lighter as usual.
For the lighter out of fluid: remove the metal cover from the lighter by bending both halves away from each other. Then, hold the toilet paper against the lighter near the slider that makes the flame larger or smaller. Now, instead of flicking the striker with your your thumb, flip the lighter over and run the striker along a flat surface. This will cause many sparks to appear in quick succession and the toilet paper will ignite.
Big fan for many years. Thanks for all the great content and tips. Thanks especially for the mistakes you've made and showed us so that we learn from them. Can't tell you how much I've learned from you and not the hard way as I usually do. Thanks again!
Sigmocheir is a genus of millipede in family Xystodesmidae. The species of this genus are endemic to California where they are found in foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains. Individuals of the genus can be found from Placer County, south to the northern portion of Tulare County.
Look for water bobbers. Egg shaped plastic bobber you add water inside for casting weight. No lead needed. Next, put a few small black feathered jigs in your gear. All fish will bite a black jig.
After years of watching you i finally got out in the ocean and did some fishing. Been out twice this week and haven't got a fish yet but did have a good time
I've watched you for a while and see you're in your element today in this video. Using rational and common sense this is a great video of how to get along outdoors.
I lived in Alaska for years. I never owned a 4 wheel drive. Drive slow, pick your lines, and if in doubt walk ahead and check conditions. I got stuck, but never had to call a tow truck. Always carry a shovel ,ax,and water
Matt - when ur lighter has no fluid, you need to scrape the flint slowly and build a pile, then ignite the pile with a spark from the lighter and it will take a minute to build them up, but it will ignite if done properly. You need to be slow and build it up without accidently making a spark otherwise your work will be burned up. I look forward to seeing you do this in the future.
When I've been hiking up in the mountains for trout fishing after getting a trout couldn't find any more bugs so I gutted the trout and use its intestines and that works but also sometimes you can find bugs inside the stomach of the trout and reuse that for bait and it works just great
Another handy tip for the dead lighter! Roll the wheel gently against the flint without sparking it fully and tap the flint dust onto the tinder then spark the lighter!
Lot's of good advice for items to include in your vehicle when venturing off road. I suggest adding at least a hand powered Come Along Winch and a Tow Strap or a Powered Winch if it can be attached to the front of your Sienna. Have fun with your adventures.
Awesome video bro! Definitely has some original fisherman’s life vibe, which is what got me hooked in the first place. As for over landing your sienna, like you said tires and a lift. Maybe a winch, and recovery gear. Hell, throw a rooftop tent on it.
Something that helps with using the spark from an empty lighter is to grind a bunch of the flint into your tissue/tinder by slowly but firmly spinning the wheel over the pile then sparking into it. It takes a while to get a good pile going but it could save you if its all you have
The seinna definitely needs a lift. Bigger tires. But if you are serious about modding that vehicle. I would consider Also suggest adding a offload compressor for depressing and inflating the tires when you go offloading after your initial lift and tires modifications, Offroad traction boards just in case you get stuck in mud or snow, and sand. A roofrack luggage carrier with offroad amber lights that can be switched to 8k lumen white lights, a spare battery/portable power storage and about 1 or 2 decent sized solar panels to charge that portable power storage. A trust Hi lift Jack just in case you need to change out a tire and fishing pole racks for the interior of the car
ofc wheels, tires, and a lift. but also a bull bar, snorkel, roof rack, maybe a full sized spare. also storage system in the trunk for a tool kit, gas stove, tackle supplies, general survival equipment.
Post the journey of fixing the sienna up. I told my brother who drives and LOVES his sienna that you were considering one when you got your highlander. Glad you got it!
🛑😳Matt my brother, did you hear my sigh @0:42?? You've always sounded to me like one of my Ol' Army Sgt, just a t-bit younger. Got your own craftsmanship, too.😊😅😮Thanks👏🏽 Memphis,10🇺🇲Watch your 6.
My Dad showed me a trick when I was a kid. Try looking under rocks half way in the water on the bank of the river we would find Rock worms under there, in Colorado. Trout love them!
if you spin the sparker without making a spark you can shave off flint dust onto the lint which then you can spark and potentially light the lint for the fire.
Rooft top tent(diesel heater too great for cold weather) and kitchen setup come in clutch came pop it out make food anytime. For extended stays shower setups are dope. For toilet a shovel haha or can do a toilet setup for women and kids 😂
You gotta watch out for what pine needles you use. Some are poisonous but glad you found the right ones. It almost took me out when I was younger. Great vid bro 👍
Get rid of that serpa holster. Also, with the dead lighter you remove the metal shield, then carefully work the wheel to deposit unignited flint dust on the material you want to burn so when you spark it on the dust pile it has a better chance to ignite into flame.
Always a pleasure when you upload kind sir. Thanks for the years of quality and informing content! Truly inspirational! Fishing is life at peace! Except when you miss the big one though. Then MANY curse words! MANY!!
You can do some mods to the van that would help, but at the end of the day it’s still a light duty vehicle not that beefy in the right places for stuff you do. A four runner, tahoe etc. would make a better starting point for a comfortable set up imo, and could easily tow your boats too. I’ve been woke up by a bear with his front paws on bed rails, looking down at me in the bed of truck. I’m starting an overland squardrop build that can be done at reasonable cost due to seeing mr puddy tat and black bear in the woods often enough I prefer to get into something at night.
You are getting further back on that river - but that really good pool I told you about at the street fair is still about twice as far. Admittedly, its a lot more rock climbing to get there but I have done it several times. Also I think there are signs that you arent supposed to spend the night at that location but nobody is ever going to check.
If you really wanna make the Sienna truly "obnoxious", find a shop that does resto mods and ask them about putting it on a real frame. Nearly all modern vehicles are unibody. Meaning, it's rigidity and structure is achieved by all the body parts interlinking, without real support beams, if you will. Like a house. Think of a house, apposed to a trailer. It will give you all the ground clearance you need, the toughness of a truck, structurally. You don't want to get crazy with the tire size though because the transmission isn't built for that. Love the channel brother. I've literally not missed a video of yours for years. God speed, God bless.
Ok that's the answer I was looking for. Sounds like to make it truly "obnoxious" like I was thinking it would need a new frame lol. That's probably not going to happen so I guess I'll settle for a small lift and off-road tires. That'll help a ton and I can also add things like a winch, skid plates, little things like that. Thanks for the comment!
Well, I guess this settles whether artificial or live baits work better cause I’ve used imitation stone flies, rubber stone fly bugs and have caught nuthin! Love your vidz brother!
A small lift and some all terrain tires you should be good. Just remember that its a minivan and not an off road vehicle so just always plan your trips to accommodate your vehicle's capabilities. And always and i mean always stay on the trail. Always remember that even 4x4 gets stuck.
Put some bronze enkei wheels on the Sienna - I think bronze wheels will look great on the white paint, kind of reminds of rally performance lol and maybe upgrade the brakes and springs to TRD (if Toyota makes them for the Sienna) KYB performance springs are great too.
Hey Matt, I got a 2001 ford excursion 7.3 4x4 diesel with lots of room for camping in it. If interested let me know am in San Jose. Great video like always man
For the worms, you should’ve lifted the rocks and then tore the grass roots out of the dirt and that’s where you would’ve started seeing the worms in the roots and under the roots. Try that next time.
next time take that metal guard off the lighter it will allow for more direct exposure to the spark instead of the sparks mostly staying inside the guard
💛...i think it would have been tastier if you kept the skin on the fish when you boiled it...kinda like a dashi...it would add more flavor to that broth...also a little more protein...a clear bubble bobber with a fly or other terrestrial might have worked better too...
Please do more of these camping trout videos, it’s what got me hooked to your channel
I got hooked by the butter used in the cooking on the beach way back when I first saw you!
Great to meet you earlier today! I've been a long-time fan of your channel, and it was awesome to actually sit down and have a conversation with you. Keep up the awesome work you been doing and good luck with all the other cool things you got going on!
Nice talking to you today too! See you around!

July 12 this year. Same spot. See you there!
A little change of pace.
A survivalist now.
Love it
The shot of the water at 00:56 to 1:00 was so serene. Thanks for sharing your adventures Matts.
Your trout videos are my favorite!! Being in a land locked state (NM) the trout vidoes are the most relatable 👌 keep up the great content!!
Breakfast scramble and biscuits and gravy are my favorite freezedried meals that i bring on trips. Chili mac with chips is a close second

That night sky was beautiful
I love when you make these trout videos. By far the best, the other videos too but these are 🔥 lol.

Great video! Shoutout to the Toyota sienna for bringing you to your campsite and taking you home safely 💪
Yes the long awaited Toyota sienna video✊🏾 much love keep up the fire content

This is the first channel I ever subscribed to on UA-cam and still one of my favorites. Let’s go
Tires, lift, onboard air compressor, dual alternator, power inverter, lights, a handyman jack and a prayer 😂
Catchen and eaten, campen out all night, your just liven in a fisherman’s paradise 😊
Hey, I just wanted to let you know how much i love your videos, I’ve been watching for a few years and I always get exited when you post!
That was cool. More of these please.
I also love these camping trout videos mainly cause I’m a big ocean fisherman and need more trout fishing knowledge thank you !
What a fantastic location. Nothing better than a fresh trout dinner by the river. Great video. Thank you brother. Take care and enjoy.

Awesome Job 💯
🏕🗻 Camping in the rain is fun and experiences peaceful camp life. This is a wonderful experience with nature❤❤
I noticed you are now strapped! Glock 17? Lol Love you Channel
Post the journey of fixing the sienna up. I told my brother who drives and LOVES his sienna that you were considering one when you got your highlander. Glad you got it!
Yeah more of this stuff would be awesome.
Tip with an empty lighter:
Grind out some of the flint from the lighter into the tinder and then spark it and it'll catch
Great video. Next time roll the spark wheel forward for a little bit then dump the dust from the flint into your tinder then hit with the spark.
Awesome video. Enjoyed it!

Come to Utah for some ice fishing. We also have a growing spearfishing scene that is a lot of fun.
Great video. A good go to trail meal is trout roman
“Parr” marks on that lil rainbow trout

love these vids
You should visit Humboldt County, crabbing, ocean/ river fishing, hunting and the beautiful redwoods! I have a blast around here!
Big dawg Matt🙏🙌🙌🙌
4 wheeling in a mini van! Matts, your such a renegade!
Man I hope to actually catch you for a great fishing convo😉 2 busy bodies will likely meet again. Much love. 🤙🏽

with an old lighter slowly roll it to get some flint dust off, then strike it and the flint dust till help get the fire going.
Sienna is where it's at! Glock also!
The dance at 9:22 😂😂😂
Another great camping & fishing video, might bring some salmon eggs or corn, for when the grubs are scarce?
Put some bronze enkei wheels on the Sienna - I think bronze wheels will look great on the white paint, kind of reminds of rally performance lol and maybe upgrade the brakes and springs to TRD (if Toyota makes them for the Sienna) KYB performance springs are great too.
You should try nrv creek bugs, it’s just a soft plastic stone fly
Hey Matt, I got a 2001 ford excursion 7.3 4x4 diesel with lots of room for camping in it. If interested let me know am in San Jose. Great video like always man
Next time with the lighter, spin the wheel backwards over your lint or tinder, get some of the flint on it then spark it and prob light right up.

Don't keep flicking for a spark, spin it to grind a pile of the flint then spark that.
you can use the trout guts as bait after you clean em
What happened to the highlander?
Roll the wheel on the lighter without sparking for a while until you have a little powder to ignite then strike it
“Great success!!”
