Yamaha is very underrated. The Revstar line deserves way more credit.
I owned a Yamaha Pacifica back in the mid 2000s. I never had anything but good luck with it. Everything Yamaha makes is tops from motorcycles to keyboards.
I used to think the lipstick pickups must sound like toys until a local summer town-sponsored weekly concert had a band with the guitarist playing a Danelectric with lipsticks and it was a great P90 tone. So they can be very good.
Danelectro has priced itself out of its original market, which was THE affordable, no frills guitar with a distinctive sound. Consequently, for many of us, we're not able to justify purchasing one when it's just Masonite mated to lipstick pickups. Certainly a distinctive sound but it just doesn't warrant the price that they're asking...
400 bucks? Thats what it cost me to have the guitar Jimmy Page played.
@@_Yep_Yep_ Yes, really four hundred bucks is a lot for a Masonite body and a set of lipstick pickups yes.
Not really expensive for a guitar
@@offbeatbassgear 400 bucks is the lowest of low end you should probably spend on any electric guitar. Come on. Thats really obtainable for basically anyone with just a little bit of saving. Almost everything below that price point can really quickly become REALLY scetchy. That being said I simply think that its ugly and I can see a lot of people agreeing with me and that is actually probably the main point why its not selling
@@metalpuppet5798 You can get a Squier CV Strat for the same price or less and it's more versatile than the Danelectro, which is basically a student guitar design. It has a distinct sound, yes. The point is, throwing down $400 for a guitar that really is just the sixties version of a Bullet is excessive.
Yamaha and G&L are the brands that come to mind when defining underrated! I love my Yamaha Pacifica 612!!
Great recommendation
I have played these for decades. These are the most underrated guitars around. They play just as grid as any guitar three or four times their prices and they sound great. Great video.
Love the sparkle and love the Danelectro’s , especially the twelve strings.
I have a 2007 DC59. Always loved it.
However, this year I replaced the aluminium nut with bone and vastly improved tuning stability (I widened the nut slot to take an Allparts Gibson nut). Highly recommended.
Then came the big moment….adding a Jeff Senn bridge. Not only sorted out the intonation but enormous sustain suddenly appeared!
I still have my Sears Silvertone (aka Danelectro) mines the Les Paul look.
But then I modified it (the nut and the original lipstick pick up) with a newer pick up and repainted to a white.
Danelectro has made some great stuff over the years. 2 of my most used pieces of gear are a vintage Silvertone guitar & amp (1302 & 1481) from the late 50's & early 60's.
when i was first shopping for a guitar years ago, I was set on a Tele. I tried several Danelectros and just loved the way they felt and sounded. Their look was that 50's this is what the future will look like vibe. Ended up with a Fernandes Native which I ended up loosing in a pawn shop. Just recently found one and love love love it. Would like to get a Danelectro, but I am now in that I need to get rid of one to get a new one phase and there is nothing I currently have that I don't love.
I had one in the 70's white vinyl hollow made out of pressboard as I recall seen a pic of jimmy hendrix in the early 60's with the same model
Thanks for bringing this to light, ROBERT!
Have three “DANO’S” including the 12 string. Just a unique sound and design, and that coke bottle headstock is so COOL!
What timing for this video! I just picked up my 59NOS (blue metal flake) last again because of needing a change from my Teles and right away it was…wow I just love this guitar! They do have such a nice tone that’s neither Fender or LP!
That outro tune rules matey. Love it.
I remember Danelectro from my early tears in the late 60's.
If I recall Sears Robuck had a line of these as well.
I love that Danelectro make 6 stings, 7 strings (maybe not currently), 12 strings, baritones, short- and long-scale basses, as well as resos and sitars, mostly out of “junk” hardboard & plywood materials ... 100% sheer vibe! If I could, I’d have one of every model. Missed the chance in the late 90s when the first run of Korean reissues was winding down, to buy a pair of brand new U2’s for £90 each - what a wasted opportunity, which I regret deeply to this day.
I'm no name guitar guy. I look pick up play listen. I bought a Hagstrom used $125 in 84. Now it wd go for 800 or more. We'll. I gave it a chance before I knew what I had.
Love the playing, vibe and tone!
I agree! I have a Dano 12-string that I absolutely LOVE! I have Ric 12-strings, as well, that I also LOVE! But the Dano is a great player, and quite "jangly" as well. Add a compressor, and it's truly heavenly! Cheers!
I played an original pink/white Danelectro Longhorn bass throughout music scool when I was young. It was simply the best sounding one they had! They also had some cheap Yamaha and Ibanez basses, but the Longhorn was the only one that sounded "rock'n'roll" 😄 I've never stopped loving their cheesy looks and great sound ever since! I don't own a Danelectro bass right now, but I have their baritone les paul shaped guitar (which is awesome).
Love my Dano. One of the rare pick it up, strum one chord & say "Oh...this is mine now". Amazing slide guitar, chords, sloppy swampy playing...fantastic. And let not forget weight. These are *featherweight* guitars thanks to the semi-hollow, Masonite laminate cheapo design. Vibiest of vibes.
I'm partway to a Danelectro. I have a Guitar Fetish Strat-sized lipstick pickup in a 2007 Gibson '59 reissue Melody Maker.
I have a strat size lipstick as the middle pickup on my strat and it's the most unique sound out of all my guitars. It's got that typical spank that middle pickups usually have but with a ton of bottom end. No other pickup has that mid scoop in such a pleasing way. Highly recommended.
I owned a Sears Silvertone “Danelectro” guitar with a built in amliplfier in the case.
It wasn’t a very powerful amp, but for home practice it was more suited.😊
I have the exact Dano 12. I keep it in open tunings... sounds amazing.
BIG plus for the twelve, it stays in tune amazingly well, I can pull it out of the case after sitting for months... still in tune!! 👍
Baby Sitar! Love it! (...well except for mine seems to be extremely touchy with set-up for that great "sitar" sound!). Eddy used the "Sitar" sound in the Lead portion (Double tracked!) of Van Halen's "Ain't Talking' 'Bout Love"!!!!!!
I have the 12 string. It really has a great sound and for the price I don't think anything else comes close.
Danelectro makes/made really good stuff. Some of the necks on the older ones are outstanding. Haven’t loved any modern guitars from them but I do like their pedals.
I love Danelectro! I have a 6 string, a 12 string, a DC bass, and some of the best pedals i’ve ever bought, including a Danny-wah that looks like a car! Plenty of guitars have feel, but none have style like a Danelectro.
I played a Danelectro way back in the 90's. It was a Baritone guitar..loved that thing and should have bought it! Really good sounding guitars!
Just got one.love it.
I love the Dano sound. It was my first off the shelf guitar. Hodad. When they put out a maple neck I'm done. I also want their 12 string really bad.
Danelectro is a part of my sound because when they reissued them in the 90's I bought one I played straight off the wall and it went on to be a great player and sounding guitar.
I would give Danelectro a chance if they didn't cost 1k cdn. They aren't worth more than 3-400 new. Cheap components like back in the day when they were a catalog guitar. If they cut their prices in half I might try one.
FUN FACT: The Coral brand was a spin-off of Danelectro that produced the Coral sitar.
To so kindly quote Lee Anderton, "I've never bought a guitar I didn't like the look of." I HATE Danelectro headstocks, and I hate Danelectro bodies only slightly less than I hate the headstock.
I love Paul Reed Smith because they are what a guitar could be in the hands of an artist, the Sistine Chapel of guitars. I love Fender because they are the Coca-Cola of guitars, "The original thing." (Yes. I am old enough to remember that. Get off my lawn!) I also love how Fender proves time and time and time again that simplicity is always better. Meanwhile, Jaguars and Jazzmasters themselves are the perfect amount of weird and different, and you can find ones without all the fancy switches.
Danelectro is a brand I have kept in my personal consideration since I was 20. In 2000, the retailer who sold me much of the equipment I bought and employed my guitar teacher was marketing a reissue series of Danelectro guitars and basses. I entered the market for a new bass that spring, and I might have grabbed up a double-neck with 12-string in the upper and bass in the lower (a la Mike Rutherford). Only - I had another teacher, a mentor whose hyper traditionalism dictated that double-necks were unplayable.
Reverend for me. Love them! I’ve always wanted one of those Danos though. I’d love one of those resonators but they are $1800 here in Australia and that’s just crazy.
That orange sparkly one reminds me of of old bowling balls and motorcycle helmets. Very cool.
Rhoades polka dot v I'm pretty sure Sandoval used their neck on I've always considered it a brand for players of electric folk style of music
4:55 is a mini-dissonance, groovy, spicy and well executed lick. Thank you for blessing my ears. I hope I dream about it tonight.
I've had a plan to buy 1 & found a pink paisley 1 for $500 Australian. but seller wouldn't post it. Not long after, a chick busker was playing her own Dano & songs outside a shopping center. I had to stop & listen. Beautiful playing & written! She's also on YT. I'll look her up & edit her name in for you. Mardi Wilson Runaway Original sound track. So talented!
Danelectro, Squire, Grestch, Seagull, Godin, Univox, Burny.
Yes, Danelectro is the guitar that comes to mind. I consider them like Baritone or 12-String guitars. But, with modern Modelers and their built in Effects, Pitch Shifting, EQ, etc., and the User's skill, I think those sounds are within reach without having to purchase another guitar. YMMV
Danos are great! They are their own thing in feel and tone. The independent VTVT with series is killer!
They sound great 👏🏻
Been looking at a danelectro 59 divine in cream .. looks and sounds stunning. Its just something a bit dofferent and unique... they're cool as hell . Maybe get a good black friday deal on one in the UK ..
I had the Resonator that I bought off Amazon at an end of year sale for around $400 and sold it, neck was too narrow for slide playing IMO. I also picked up a used 12 string for $300 and it is a blast to play and the neck is wide enough for my big fingers. Both guitars were great for the price I paid but that is the maximum I would pay for one, not really getting a lot for your money, the 12 string doesn’t even have a truss rod.
I have a 64 xt. Effortless playability and tuning stability. The sound is very unique and versatile. One of my favorite guitars
I really love Danelectros. They deliver more mojo per dollar than any other brand, bar none. They're also surprisingly well-made guitars. Mine is over 20 years old and still plays perfect. I should get a second one...
I have the 12 string. It's awesome.. a lot of coolness for the price. I've recorded with it, and it always sounds great!
Years ago when Dano made the DC-3 I so wanted one, but I couldn’t afford it. Now I sometimes still find one used and I’m like, “I want that”, but I still can’t afford it!😅😢 I did have a Dano-12 for a long while, but I sold it to get that new Squier Jazzmaster-12 for about half the price. (I also have tried the Reverend 12 (12 locking tuners and a chambered body= tons of neck dive), and I had a Charvel Surfcaster 12 I am still kicking myself for selling (also had the lipstick pickups).)
I have a 59x12 (12 string guitar). It has a very bright and noise sound, but I can manage that.
It would be awesome if Danoelectro have a 3 p90 pickup guitar (with some push-pull options, maybe). It would be my next guitar.
3, 2, or 1, a DC "junior" would be rad
I owned a used danelectro back in the early 2000s. Their sound when I played one was plastic. It was a cool looking guitar. I ended up trading it in.
Eastwood Guitars is another company I would suggest. I own the Classic 6 is a take on the Country Gentleman by Gretsch.
I feel like a winner that the first brand to pop in my mind was danelectro. I was actually looking this morning if they have a Black Friday sale announced
I agree with your observations. I am still playing a DanElectro '56 U2 model. Do not underestimate the lipstick pickups, they will surprise you. You don't have to play Surf City tunes if you don't want.
Hey Robert, thank you for showing some DANO LOVE. I grabbed a 59 JP model around 15 years ago and it plays amazing well. It’s a bit different than the current models today. The bridge routing is smaller. I love this machine because it’s so easy to play. Also, I love your channel!
I just wanted to write you Robert Baker and Say out of all the teachers I've had and all the UA-cam "teachers" You and The Signals dude are the only 2 that work for me. I appreciate the freebies you make and will be buying some of your courses coming pay day. Thanks you.
I have a '58 Silvertone U-2 that I'll never let go of. It desperately needs a new selector switch, but I'm not sure where to find one. I'm pretty sure it's an on-off-on spdt switch, but it's been years since I've looked inside. If anyone has a lead on replacement switches, dual ganged pots, and bridge upgrades for the vintage danos, I'd love to hear about it.
Like a Tele.....EVERYBODY should have a Dano❤❤😎👍
Just wondering what you tune your 12 string??
I am a big Danelectro junkie. I have original cases, amps, guitar and pedals. I have just about every pedal they have ever made. I even have the amazing Danelectro strings that they once made but not enough of them. I WISH i had bought mere when they were made, Danos are the coolest. I also have Fenders, Epiphones, Gibsons, Martins and other top brands but Danelectro is my favorite.
I think of G&L when you say, “Give this brand chance”
I would live to try a G&L... but I've yet to find one to try around here.
5:18 Steve Stein and Robert Baker I didn't know you guys knew each other that is classic that would love to see you guys together the music you just played with sweet as usual 🤔🧐😮😢😊
I've seen Wilco several times. Nels Cline plays several different Danolectric style guitars. It's a big part of his sound. Nels plays the Jerry Jones versions though.
Danelectro has a long history in rock & roll as a low budget, easily playable instrument with its own sound. Randy California of Spirit played one on the early Spirit albums, and Mechanical World on their first album shows the kind of crazy sustain it could produce. They also produced guitars for other companies, such as many of the electric Silvertones that Sears sold in the 60s, were really made by Danelectro.
Diggin' it, buddy!
One brand that comes to mind that I wish more folks wouild give a chance would have to be Agile AL-series Guitars from Rondo's Music. They truly are fantastic guitars!
Always wanted one
You gotta love Danelectro. About a year ago, I bought a Danelectro "Longhorn" bass which also sounds unique. It's unlike a Fender Jazz or Precision, or anything else. And, it's short scale and semi-hollow, so it's easier to store and transport, and it's lighter(which becomes a bigger deal as you get older, LOL)
Totally agree. I have 4 (so far:)
the Danelectro lipstick pickups sound great
I’d be into getting the 12 string electric.
They are my faves! Been a lipstick fan for 30+ years. And the Dano 12 strings are the BEST on the market.
I KNEW IT! I have a Danelectro baritone. It's okay. And I have it in the middle position, so much punchier there.
My friend has a 12 version of the your orange sparkle but in black. I just think of Jimmy Page when I think of Dan Electro
Besides the EVH guitars Peavey guitars get overlooked alot
Have you played any Silvertone/Harmony guitars? I understand that in the 1960's, Dan Electro made Silvertone guitars.
You have never been more correct!!
I see that you are in your new digs. When is the tour or did I miss it?
Yep we are all set up and runnin now :) I posted the video here ua-cam.com/video/WUPkwQ0q--U/v-deo.html
Definitely, G&L.
Danelectro was my first guitar very long ago. It wasn't constructed very well but it did sound decent. They are much better guitars nowadays and I agree, different and cool. I wouldn't mind owning another.
Man I wish the ibanez john " bad boy" petrucci sig ibanez models would sell again
Such a great video Robert! I don´t own one, I have thought about owning one but never been able to bring myself to part with my hard earned cash! They certainly have their own vibe, their own tone(?) maybe? Just different, alternative.... One day my friend, one day 🙂
I was watching the Beverley Hillbillies the other day and Jed was playing a double neck Danelectro
The closest thing to a sitar without buying one. There's a reason Page used one solely for his Eastern influenced music.
There's clearly a reason why Jimmy Page liked using one. I'd love to find an original USA one like his, but they don't seem to come up for sale in the UK that often.
It's hard for me to pass on a metalflake guitar! I have the Danelectro Sitar Guitar, the one with the sympathetic strings. I got it at Sweetwater, and all they currently have is Dan Baby Sitar (no sympathetic strings)
Yeras ago, I had a Sears Silvertone (Danelectro made these for Sears), 2 lipstick case pickups - black sparkle, white pickguard, that I bought at an open air Flea Market in Berlin, New Jersey for $10.00 !!! The guy was asking $15, but I talked him down to $10, while trying to keep a poker face. I asked if he would throw the plastic gig bag in for free and he agreed !!! I was overjoyed. I sold it much later for $200.00.
I have 4 and the are amazing and so affordable
LOTS of pros play them and have for many years ! jimmy page recorded lots of zep songs on one and tom petty played the long horned bass on all the travailing wilburys music !
The "people should give it a chance" guitar for me is definitely D'Angelico
Perhaps it's the matter of style and design.
I was at my friend's place one time playing his guitars. He had some nice guitars. I was playing his Gibson LP Jr and he's like here, try this. It was a Dan Electro. I shocked at how much I didn't like it. I knew a lot of people like them and that people like Jimmy Page played them but, wow, I really didn't like it. I think it was the least expensive one they had but it felt and sounded like a toy, especially compared to the LP Jr. Maybe it was just me, idk. I would like to try a different one someday just to see if I have the same reaction.
The aesthetics of Danelectro guitars might just look odd to most people.
i played a danelectro this week, i was shocked at how skinny the neck was
The doublenecks are kick ass.
Man sometimes watching these videos I feel like a looser because I can play but only have one junk guitar and a junk amp. You have some amazing guitars and amps! Maybe someday. Anyway enough crying for me😂 keep making these cool informative videos 👍
If you ever wanted that toan from Clint Black's Killin' Time, it's a Danelectro Baritoan.
That sparkly gold is HOT.
Dano's are cool. I don't know if they're underrated, everyone who's into them gets on board sooner or later. I don't think it's a case of people giving them a chance, they're a specific thing and not everyone gets to a point where they want that thing or that vibe.
I think Yamahas are more solid than they're given credit for. Schecter's S-style and offsets are great too.
Old Dano’s are the ones I like. The current ones are great but I will only buy one of the American made ones. Another brand that is terribly overlooked is Godin ( Canadian built) the electrics, in my opinion do not get the respect they deserve. Godin summit classic supreme and the 59 Stadium and sessions series are very nice instruments. They are beautiful. I do agree with the Dano sound it is unique unto itself. Those damn lipstick pickups rule!
