What's your favorite VH Album?
If I could only keep one record it would probably be Fair Warning.
W&CF
I don’t have a favourite. My most listened is probably 1984. Best track is not enough without a doubt for me
All of them. Can't choose.
Diver Down
The Dtuna needs setup. There is an adjustment screw on it. You pull the dtuna out, and tune it to D. Then push it in, and use a small allen wrench to fine tune it to E. Once setup, it works perfectly. Ed designed it.
A trem stabilizer or block also helps to stat in tune better. Stabilizer is a bitch to set up but worth it. ..
@@onlyfromadistance7326 The EVH guitars are designed from the factory to be decked, so they can't be pulled sharp. The D-Tuna wouldn't work with a both-way floating floyd bridge.
@@TheGgreen100 i have an mim and its very hard to get the action right while fully decking the bridge so neither the treble side or bass side can move even a tiny bit.
got a trem blocking screw for the spring cavity so its now stable and i can still dive bomb and set the action just right.
after that tuning the dtuna with the screw is easy
@TheGgreen100 thats what a stabilizer is for. A trem block is like decking it. A stabilizer maintains pressure and doesn't restrict. But with the dtuna, it also requires a bit of routing. Probably not worth the work for most people. Therefore, i recommend more guitars. You should at least have a trem and a hardtail for every tuning you use. Then, you need guitars for different pickups. Ect...
@@onlyfromadistance7326 The EVH Frankie, Wolfgangs, and EBMM EVH/Axis all have the Floyds against the body, they can only drop in pitch. A trem stabilizer serves no purpose in this situation. On a floating Floyd its definitely needed for the dTuna.
My local Sam Ash had one of the first runs of the original EVH FrankenStrats in a plexiglass case with lights aimed at it, it rotated slowly. It had a price tag of $22k and as close as it could get to to Eddies down to the cigarette burns, 1978 quarter under the Floyd and the truck reflectors on the back. It was like a religious artifact. I stood there starring at it with four other dudes and we just paid homage to the King. My wife comes up and said "who would pay that much for a piece of junk like that? Look at this shiny new one for $300 (she was pointing to an Epiphone SG) and it's PERFECT. Does that thing even work? Look, the wires are sticking out on the front! And..." at that point I had to look at the other guys and hang my head in shame. She just didn't get it. I don't think she found it funny when I told her I would sell her wedding ring to make a down payment on it. lol
So there is a little hex nut on the side of the D-tuna. First thing to do is unscrew the low E string fine tuner on the floyd rose so it is all the way up. That way you have clearance to pull the D-tuna in and out. Tune to the drop D then push the D-tuna in and use the allen wrench to adjust the string to E until it's in pitch. Once you have it set up properly you will love it trust me.
Best explanation. Thanks!
The d tuna only works properly if you actually read the instructions. Tune to d with it out but only half a turn in on the fine tuner so it just touches the screw. You have to fart about getting it to be almost spot on in D after you lock the bolt at head without touching fine tuners. Push it in and turn tiny screw in side till it’s E. (set it in middle position before you start all this)
I push down and in or down and out to move the d tuna.
Also on a side note I set my Floyd level and used a small wooden block behind the block so the spring tension always holds it in a home position.
Everything works a treat
Resting the trem on the body my d tuna never worked properly.
Let me know if you need any more help I’ll send a mail with pics
I bought the 5150 striped series, I absolutely love it, the Franky didnt do it for me, but the 5150 is a monster, 1 pickup, hockey stick shaped headstock, love everything about it ❤❤
The D-Tuna works perfectly once setup correctly. Make sure the tremolo rests completely flat against the body (adjust the tremolo spring tension if necessary). You don’t want it to lift when bending strings etc.
Back the Floyd Rose fine-tuner off as much as possible to allow enough clearance. Tune the low E string to D with the D-Tuna pulled out. Lock the string. Push the D-Tuna in and fine tune to E using the little D-Tuna grub screw - That’s all there is to it. Then as is compulsory… play Unchained! 🤘
To all who enjoy this channel and the creator (Robert) HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO YOU AND YOURS! Now shall we all do a little VH riff to kick off this holiday!?! I’m choosing Unchained!
I love mine so much I got the black and white plus the bumblebee. They all sound great and look amazing side by side. Got a few Wolfgang's also, Eddie designed great products that I think a lot of people over look.
Robert, I feel SO lucky to have seen King Edward play his original twice. I've heard they're great. That Fender custom shop Frankie looks awesome. You do it incredible justice my friend. Looking forward to the course. Keep up the great work!!!!🎸🤘🎸
In the included alan key bag there is an extra normal pin for the Floyd rose to replace the d tuna
bruhhh you totally nailed that EVH tone!! Amazing! 😮🙌
I had the Floyd flat to the body, but the front edge was digging into the wood so I raised the 2 “pivot pins” (I’m totally blanking on what those are called!) but now the whammy is way too stuff. Especially the first movement. I curious to see how yours is set up. I absolutely love the guitar and it sounds great even on non-VH stuff!!
Hey Robert ! Love your videos ! I was wondering what you use to get the wood on the neck of your frankie smooth again like it was out the box ?
Thanks
I've always done all of my own setups (and I've owned guitars with trems and d-tunas before), but my frankie that I got 6 months ago was the first one I ever took in for a pro setup due to tuning issues. The luthier said this was one of the most stubborn examples he'd ever worked on and recommended getting a replacement d-tuna because the factory one wasn't catching in the E position, so the thing would actually move if you bent the 6th string. He also wrapped the posts with teflon tape as they were wobbling within the bushings.
I had to install a trem stopper to stabalise the D Tuna...works great now....there was a tiny bit of float in the bridge...cue the 70's quarter..would do same job,,,,I had 3 goes with shop to stabilise the guitar before finally installing the trim stop....perfect now...guitar can sit for a month and its still basically in tune.
I have a Kramer Illusionist, which is basically the 5150 with a custom paint job. I have the d-tuna and love it! Mainly because it makes restringing a Floyd Rose so much simpler! Now retuning your low string is kind of a pain. For me, I just unlock the nut and tune the string manually, but then I’ve never gigged with it.
I have the wolfgang special and the D-tuna works great. I had to research how it worked and was surprised that you start with it pulled out, tune to D, and then push it in and use the fine tunning screw (not knob like the other 5 strings) to tune to E.
After that you pull it out fine tune, push it in fine tune, repeat for awhile and boom, it works.
It is probably my second favorite guitar behind my mexican strat.
Great re-review! Always enjoy your content. I have an original Floyd rose from the 80’s. I switched it out. Put a big block on the bridge and a better d-tuna. Problem is, it has to float just a little bit. Had to route a little bit of material. Also hooked up the single coil. It’s not a bad pickup.
I have one of these and also a custom made Frankenstein relic built in the Uk. Both guitars are awesome. EVH was so good he will always be the best. Great video Robert
Regarding the D Tuna, when I received mine it worked flawlessly, but it was a bit of a pain to disengage it to drop D, but when I did my first string change it was out of tune so I just dont bother with it neither.
There is a small grub screw on it though that you use to get it to be in tune, and you also need to adjust the low E fine tuner all the way up, I've not even attempted to try and get mine working again, but it was perfect when I first got it.
I have two of the EVH stripe series guitars. The black and yellow and the circles guitar.
Great Content Robert, love the channel. I picked up a Frankie about a year ago. It ended up being a fantastic guitar after a neck shim and a great setup. From the factory it was a mess. But I did not get it from Sweetwater, I hear they send em out with a great setup
The secret with the D-Tuna is have your fine tune adjustment backed way out (high). Basically, there won't be much fine-tuning available but the low E never needs it anyway. With it high, it can be pushed in and out and stay in tune at both E and drop D. Thought it was me not getting the little adjustment screw on the D-Tune, but no. Start with fine tuner backed almost out. Then adjust the D-Tuna and BOOM it stays in tune.
Pre ordered one before Covid. Took a little more than a year to arrive. Well worth the wait. Bought evh case, 1971 quarter, reflectors and guitar strap assembly and it looks great. Don’t play it much but I like to open the case just to look at it. Still makes me smile.Gone up in value since purchase.
Do you know if the drop D Turner is different on the more higher end E VH guitars that it comes on
It is an awesome guitar. I wired up the front pickup to a 3 way blade switch. I also removed the D Tuna. I wish EVH/Fender/Charvel would make a strat with the exact neck profile that this has. I also have the Eruption guitar. That guitar is awesome too.
I’ve found every MIM EVH I own has needed a little d-tuna tweak. My US Wolfgangs still hold up. Haven’t tried the MIJ Sig yet…
Saw this in my thumbnails and thought SW might have sent you the solid version. (Thought that was a great contest idea 😁)
The Frankie is a great guitar. I was mad about no case or gig bag, but just bought a case anyway. Mine has held up well…think I may have chuckled with joy while taking it out.
Glad you’re still enjoying it… Keep up the good work.
Took a couple minutes to get the D-Tuna right on my Wolfgang but once it was right it is awesome. I'd imagine they aren't much different on you guitar. Hope there is another follow up video about this guitar in a few weeks, with praise for the D-Tuna.
Getting ready to unbox mine, so excited to plug this in my Marshall DSL100H full stack!
What do you use to get that sound?? is excellent !!
Mine's on order, getting it plek'd so a little over a week for delivery. Can't wait!
Personally my favorite one was the unchained circles striped series, which is now going for as much as one of these. Kinda regret not picking one up when it was still being made.
I tried a few but it didnt feel good to play for me. I made my own. I ordered a Northern Ash Frank body from KNE, got a '70s style neck from Warmoth, Made in Germany Floyd Rose, Schaller tuners, SD JB pickup and bought a EVH case :) The Northern Ash body makes a huge difference. Its a killer guitar and if you really need to you can even stick a Gibson logo on the headstock like Ed's original '78
😊 I smile every time I open the case too. Almost a spiritual feeling, holy grail of guitars
My Wolfgang with a D tuner stays in tune real good but you're right when you flick the D tuning it's never in D it's always wrong. If you adjust it it works right after you adjust it but then it seems to go out over time while the E stays e somehow the D doesn't
Wanted one of these since release, I just couldn't get over that it came with no case.
If the trem is not locked, the D-Tuna will not work. I bought a lockout kit on amazon, took 5 minutes to install, and after that the D-Tuna works perfectly. You can still dive bomb the trem, but it is not floating anymore. Also makes broken strings not so scary anymore (like on a floating trem. :)
Like @rickjohns689 said - You pull the dtuna out, and tune it to D. Then push it in, and use a small allen wrench to fine tune it to E. Once setup, it works perfectly. AND I ADD TIP: The main trick to put the Dtuna working well, is when you fine tune it in E with the wrench. Tune it with the guitar in playing position. If you tune it laying down will be a little bit off. At least that is what i do on my 2 Wolfgangs!!
Absolutely love this guitar and the way it plays!!!
Well… the way you play, ROBERT!!!Definitely not comparing myself to you!
Playing it gives you that; “EDDIE” vibe🙏🙏🙏
I don’t use the D’Tuna…I just leave it, cuz it’s EDDIE!
Thank you ROBERT!
I have the dtuna on 2 guitars. It takes some setup but works perfect. You are so impatient lol. Use the allen wrench to fine tune it. Once it's set it works perfectly. I was surprised but impressed at how simple it was once it was set up correctly. Thank!
If the D Tuna is pulled out it is in fact engaged... Pulling it out is what drops it to D and pushing it in disengages it and returns it to E. Yours just needs to be setup. There are some really good videos here on UA-cam on how to do it, it's really very easy to do. That's how I learned to set mine up and it works perfectly on my Wolfgang Special.
What is the rest of the signal chain for your demo?
I have an early rocket red standard 5150, put a kill switch (button) right next to the pickup switch, pickup switch on the top puts it directly in way of most tapping and such fun....anywho, the reason I'm posting is about the DTuna. With the way the fine tuners angle back on EVH branded floyd roses, it just makes it suck. Mine works, stays in tune fine, but the drop down angle of it makes it a pain in the ass. You'd think being that is a key feature, they would have made it parallel to the body. I literally have to dive bomb the bridge to pull it out, not cool.
I wired up the neck pup cause why not? It’s a working pup and sounds decent! It makes the guitar more versatile for cleaner stuff. Push pull on the volume knob to operate.
The D-Tuna itself has to be tuned for it to work right. Once it's setup, it works perfectly.
First, pull it out and tune your guitar to Drop D, then push it back in and tune the low string back up to E with the little screw inside the D-Tuna itself. Done.
The neck on my Frankie feels identical to my 2009 Fender American Standard Strat. And the D-Tuna came dead nuts on and ready to use. But I just bought it a few months ago, so they may have changed some details.
Dude...Hear about it later..Sounded sick!
I got the first run when they came out, I still love mine
I'm sure it is a fantastic guitar. Warren DeMartini is the reason that I picked up a guitar 40 years ago and as a result, I started out on Charvels and Jacksons. Today, and for many years I have played Les Pauls because I tried one within the first 10 years of my playing and it was a light-switch moment in what feel, tone and clarity were all about for my taste at least.
I tried to revisit the super strats but just cannot get along with the feel, tone or even the looks anymore.
I realize that I'm a minority in this experience.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone !
I know others are saying it but the DTuna has separate paperwork for how to properly set it up. It makes a difference ,it will stay in tune!
I have several guitars with the D-Tuna now. I hated them at first too, because I hadn't set them up properly. Now that I have, I Love them.
Easiest way is to watch a UA-cam vid on how to set them up, the booklet isn't the best.
I pop it in and out of drop d or drop c# constantly now.
As Robert states, it's a great guitar. Plays, sounds and (mostly) looks great out of the box. However, one of the (many) fun things about this guitar is that you can make it your own very quickly. Once you've added the (mandatory) drilled 1971 (or year of your choice) quarter at the bridge, there's lots more you can do. Adding a bit of tape where Eddie used it to hold his guitar cable to wireless pack in position. Making the overly clean trem cavity look as aged as the rest of the guitar (paint and graphite powder). Adding the pick holder strip and picks. I could go on. For me, though, the big one was improving the look of the ridiculously placed and unnatural-looking body indentations that make it look like it's been attacked by a fork weilding Mexican (which, let's face it, it most probably was). In some ways, I wish they'd just shipped the fork with the guitar and let me do a better job. Anyhoo, once you've filled/disguised the worst of them, it looks a lot better. Truck reflectors optional.
I love these guitars. To me they are almost custom shop level playability. I love the neck and the tone. I'd kinda rather have a plain white one now that those are on the market but i'll just keep my frankie. Man my D Tuna works fine out of the box. Fair Warning probably. Or the first one.
Have the Black n White EVH and I didn't have any luck with the D tuna eather.. It's 2013 and Paid $750 at a pawn shop..Still had the plastic on the pick guard..I didn't see much difference in the neck between the two myself.. All in all ,they all are cool in there own right. VH 🤘
I'm buying this just for the 80s course! Just got the course today!
The D-tuna doesn't work if the trem is floating. It has to be set up so you can't pull up, only down.
I bought a 78 Eruption. Very happy. Great guitar and the relic feels genuine. And the bridge screws for the basic tremolo are even set to how Eddie had his set up!
I really like the looks of that 78 model. Does it stay in tune when you use the bar for divebombs?
@@goneflying140 I’m not much for the tremolo bar. The one thing I can say is it’s setup like Eddie’s tech demo’d on UA-cam. The two outer screws loosened up,etc. But even with that, the way Eddie put the string on was different. I’d think it’s a “your mileage may vary deal,” but it’s a fantastic guitar.
want a frankie, but gonna hook up the other pickup. would rather it had the hockey stick headstock. also want the the 5150 (kramer 1984)... always loved them both. wished they came with stainless frets too....
I have one of these myself! I absolutely love it! The thing about mine is, I debated with myself for quite some time before pulling the trigger on it. As it turned out, I purchased mine the day before he passed. Jeez…
I love mine a lot, the neck feels amazing.
I love my 78 Eruption, I wonder if the necks are similar? I'm team Floyd Rose for life but I do like how easy the non locking trem is to tune once and a while
I have the striped series frank and its a damn good guitar
I had one and the tremolo used to stick to the paint underneath it so I put a piece of paper inbetween. Very annoying.
I absolutely love mine... sounds so good
Made my own...out of spare parts of course... Eddie would have loved it too!
Deleting the DTuna has two huge benefits:
1) Less fuss and bother with tuning.
2) Perfect reason (excuse) to get a second one so you have one in drop d and the other e flat at all times… Win win all around
Own one n it grows on me,,,same string, live in a four season state n over time l just pick up n rock out very sturdy axe,,EVH knew his crafts
I have a peavey wolfgang and I feel the same way about the d-tuna. I just took mine off.
When you push the dtuna back in you need to have your thumb in the same spot every time. It takes some practice but give it a try that’s what I do.
I’m probably weird but I never got one of these because I don’t feel worthy of it. That thing kicks major booty though! I did buy a Charvel Henrik Danhage signature which is similar body and kneck wise I think. That’s a killer guitar as well.
Yep. I flipped out- then realized they don’t make a left handed model!!
Dammit.
The entire line, white black, yellow black, and this, no lefties…
There is only ONE left handed white/black in existence; made especially for one Mr. Nick Bowcott… i might need to drive to Indiana real quick.
Before you remove it there is an adjustment on it to fine tune it. I had to fine tune mine so maybe that's not part of the SW 55 point inspection
If I get one, I'm going to put on a new SSS 3pl black PG, add a CT switch, wire in the neck pup, add a TBX tone, & a 3 way switch, but leave the HB in place. The holes for the PG are there except for the top one near the HB, it was chiseled out by Ed on his original. I'll use a longer screw that will go down into the rout to mount, but everything else can go back to original. Also, If the neck SC hums, it'll be replaced with a DiMarzio Cruiser in black & I may add another in the middle. Why? I can't stand having one pup in a guitar, but I still want one of these,,,,,,,,,,, badly.
I bought one over the summer like right after my wife bought me a $3500 Les Paul custom that I love but like you I picked it because of Ed and I only play my Frankie That neck feels raw I’ve never held a guitar that feels so sexy And like all my guitars lately Sweetwater’s and get it plek’d one more thing Neil Zloz has a new book my wife got me for Christmas autographed by Neil and all great picks Lately I think back on how much joy the music the live shows and learning the songs brought me and guys like you Rob help me remember how much I loved that time 🤟🏿✌🏿
One of the coolest guitars ever made by the King 👑 himself!!!
I feel the same way about my Ace Frehley Aged Budokan. It is supremely jacked-up, and supremely awesome. Have to agree though - at that price no Ash/Case? Seriously...
First of all : another great video 👍. Franky also gives me that badass smile you mentioned. Your amp sounds : what is it about? did you use a real amp or digital stuff to get those sounds here ? Sounds killer in the video. Second : you should do a VAN HALEN guitar lesson video with things similar to the ones used here in the vid. 🎶🎸🥁. THANKS & Greetings from Germany 🇩🇪
I think... Bass as in the large perch fish, they go after in tournaments.
I’m trying to make up my mind between this, a standard striped series, and a Wolfgang Special. Which should I get? 2000 is a lot! Is it worth it??
I hated my D-tuna as well. It wouldn't stay in tune. Had it removed. No more issues.
Your Videos are Awesome, Luv IT!!!!!🤘🏻👍🏻🇩🇪
ooohhhh oooHHHH OOOOHHHH!!!!! Getting so close to 500k subscribers, man. Got any big plans?
The DTuna is crap. I’m glad it works for some people but I have it properly setup on my Wolfgang and it kinda works for the Drop D but if I try to engage the E it takes me forever to tune it to pitch it either goes a bit too far on the screw or not far enough…
Anyone else just sitting around waiting for the 80s course to drop? Happy Thanksgiving!
It’s out my man 😎 robertbakerguitar.com/p/80s-rock-course?coupon_code=LAUNCH&product_id=5192686
Reguarding the d-tuna. Fu-tone now makes a titanium one and claims it’s better going from e to D but it’s three time the price of the original so if your on the fence it may not be worth it but if you like to use it it may be an upgrade
Brother Baker, your Eddie chops are awesome ♠️♠️
It’s missing the quarter drilled next to the bridge.
I had a Wolfgang USA, a Wolfgang Special, and a 5150. The 5150 was literally 5150 tone all day. I loved the way it sounded. Unfortunately, it didn’t fit me. The frets seemed farther apart. Didn’t work for my take-my-strong-hand hands. So out it went.
The Wolfgangs were AMAZING. Best guitars I’ve ever played. Unfortunately, I hated the Floyd Rose. So out they both went.
I’m back to my Gibson and PRS habit. Maybe I’ll get another Wolfgang someday. Maybe….
I bought one of the first peavey Wolfgang deluxe quilt top sunbursts sold in the USA. I also used to own a prototype cherry flame maple deluxe that was made on July 4 1997 and didn’t have a serial #. Unfortunately, I don’t have them anymore but I am enjoying my Ernie Ball stingray RS just as much. Maybe even more since I don’t have to deal with a Floyd rose. I would definitely consider EB for your next purchase.
Props for playing a version of Fools!!
It's a basswood guitar and from my understanding, Eddie's Frankenstein was a basswood guitar, wasn't it? He's on record saying he prefers basswood so if it's good enough for him, it's good enough for us lol. Anyway, I have one and it feels indistinguishable from my ash Charvels in terms of weight and balance. Almost all of these will fall in that perfect goldilocks 7 lb range. Not a thing wrong with basswood.
Would be interesting to know if that was an amp, or a modeler used to get that tone. This guitar to my knowledge has been out for some time now, right? It’s not something new, unless i missed something, recently. I love Eddie as much as the next guy, but for what they’re charging, it should be an Ash body, and come with a case. But, there’s something different about that pickup, than the rest of the EVH line. That guitar just sounds different (better in my opinion).
Thanks for the review… and yeah man, it means even more now. It’s phenomenal copy of Eddies baby 👍💯
Will you do any mods?
My EVH Striped black and white is one of the best sounding guitars I have, I got it for like $750 used too
I’ve had striped series, this is by far my favourite guitar…..
Keep D TUNA, you'll fall in love with it ,if set up right
Mine showed up at the shop on the day he died. Talk about mixed emotions. Killer tone btw.
Hahahahahaha…I never could get my D-tuna to work…some people swear by them…I took mine off and thru it in the case
Damn that guitar sounds great!
Gotta love Eddie’s Frankenstein!!!
