most of them think too theoretically and ignore important facts: a Croatian Ausgleich wouldn't have saved the Empire, because Croatia was not the breaking point at all. Actually the Croatians and Slovenians were the last to go home from the Italian front, because they knew that Italy had territorial claims on their very homeland and they didn't want to leave Austria just to wake up in Italy the next morning. The same is true for the Ruthenians/Ukrainians. They knew Austria was way better than the alternative: Russia The same is true about the Poles. Of course they wanted to recreate a new Polish state. But this was only possible if Russia, Germany and Austria would either accept or all three be so weak that they couldn't oppose, which sounded very unrealistic until October/November 1918. In the meantime Austria was clearly the better choice of the three. The revolution that ended the Empire was actually a communist one, not a nationalist. The red guards and communist agitators toppled the monarchy and this was due to the bolshevik influence from Russia. And Russia wouldn't have been bolshevik if general Ludendorff wouldn't have had the crazy idea to sit this guy Lenin in Switzerland into a train cross Germany. So Ludendorff was the problem. And it was Ludendorff whom the young Emperor Charles dispised the most. Ludendorff had sabotaged all peace attempts and had affronted Austria several times ... just to get a nervous breakdown a few months later and capitulate completely.
There already is one. It is called what if everything went perfect for the central powers and its sequel what if central powers won ww1. That is as far as italy can realistically go
9:11 This is really interesting as technically before the Great War, Austria-Hungary was the second largest country inhabited by Slavs, after Russia. I've got an interesting proposal which is 'what if the Habsburgs accepted the fall of the Empire' basically what if one of the Emperors (say Karl I who was made a saint for his commitment to peace) decided that collapse was inevitable and negotiated a peaceful dissolution aiming to prevent ethnic conflicts or wars within the old empires borders (and presumably allowing the Habsburgs to cling onto some form of power in perhaps just in Austria proper).
I think it would be very tense with specifically Russia, Romania, Serbia, and Italy wanting as much territory as possible. With possibly even Germany wanting to annex Austria
Like the other comment said, this would lead to even more war. In our timeline the only thing keeping Italy away from invading the balkans was Austria-Hungary & Italy immediately invaded once that collapsed with some imperial territories still around today (interestingly: because Hitler signed it off in WW2 & the allies agreed with Hitler on it). The only reason Austria was not included in the German unification is because of the Habsburg crown owning non-German lands, so in this alternate timeline Austria would be peacefully integrated into Germany plausibly in the 1890s if not sooner - although this would be a permanent & irrevocable integration on equal footing as every other German state. The balkans would also still fall into ethnic violence eventually. Hungary would likely retain its original borders. Depending on what happens with Czechoslovakia you could either end up with a Switzerland 2.0 or alternatively a more isolated war between that & Germany as following WW1 in our timeline many German cities revolted and declared independence following WW1 (the Czech army invaded German-Austria or what would later be called the Sudetenland with only the threat of a British invasion keeping the Austrian army from defending its territory).
25:36 How on earth does this myth STILL exist? Officers in the imperial army had to be able to speak the so called "regiment-languages" within at most three years of taking command and each and every general had to be able to at least give basic instructions in every language that was spoken among his men. The idea that the big stuffy general from Austrian nobility only spoke German and his soldiers wouldn't understand him is just that - an ahistorical myth. But then again this channel is so often wrong when it comes to topics surrounding Austria and the Habsburg empire.
Yeah, and this myth completely ignores basic military structuring and organisation. Why would regiments, brigades, divisions contain more than 3 or 4 ethnicities? Austria-Hungary was ethnically diverse, but that not that diverse. Only place that would come to mind is Pressburg or Banat, but that's 2 and 3 other languages at most respectively. Though the enlisted men themselves would likely be able to speak at least 1 other language

The habsburgs could have been saved, because history isn't wrote in marble before happening, but the way Franz-Joseph acted, very self-centered as he was, well aware his personnality alone and the support of Germany were the only things maintaining this mess of an empire together, didn't prevent it at all, it probably accelerated the fall
This scenario was already made. Austria-Hungary meanwhile just comes off as a weaker and less influential part of Habsburg history. Also, there were different ways in saving the Habsburgs.
A similar state to the loved hypothetical "Danubian Confederation" already existed twice. First, as the Kingdom of Aragon. There were the crowns of Aragon, Catalonia, the Balearics, Sardinia, Naples, Sicily and briefly even a few others in France and Greece, united under the Aragonese. All those crowns had considerable autonomy and freedom, and while it was all well and good, it also made it super easy for the country to be split up amongst heirs if a dispute was to come up, thus compromising the unity and integrity of the Aragonese Kingdom (like what happened when Naples was briefly freed from the Aragonese realm). It happened again with de Trastamara and Hapsburg monarchies of Spain, where we had the crowns of Castile and Leon, Aragon, Sardinia, Sicily, Naples, Flanders, Franc Comté and at different points in time even Portugal, Bohemia and Austria. This had the same problem as Aragon, as well ss the fact that, while Aragon, not being that much powerful compared to the other crowns in its realm, could not afford to compromise their autonomy and authority, here Castile and Leon would be by far the richest and strongest crown, which lead them to gradually reduce the autonomy and authority of the other crowns in the Spanish realm until we get to the Bourbons who centralised the kingdom. So, these governments can work, but the crowns have to be balanced, and the country will likely not stay united for long.
If the De Trastamara had been less unlucky they could have pulled It off I think. Not being tied down to the Habsburg and being closer to Portugal would have been great for Spain

@@KryztovTankOh, yeah, like the Habsburgs sure don't have a history of playing minorities against Hungary. I wonder what the creation of an Illyrian crown for example would lead to 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔 Comparing Orbán's Hungary to 1867- Hungary? 😂😂😂😂😂
@@jokekopter2509 Considering, as PH said, that hungarians were very unwilling to let go any part of their realm, including ones that should rightfully be transfered (like modern day Burgenland), it's true in the hypothesis that you achieve to convince Hungary to let the croats go (making them loose between 99% and 100% of their coastline) OR, at least, achieve to confront them with the fait accompli of croatian independance, either by ruse (pushing the croats to proclaim themselves their independance), by threat (mayby asking Germany for help, as diplomatically costly it is) or else. Otherwise, you have to either force them (most probably through war) or compromise with them, thus leading to the very probable galician crown which would become a supporter of Hungary against Vienna. And yes, I say "99% to 100% of their coastline" because there's the issue of Fiume/Rijeka, which was a royal city "sui generis" not integrated within Croatia, and so that imo would remain under hungarian rule.
I agree that "one more crown" is not the way to reform the empire, but I disagree that post 1867 reform was impossible or incredibly difficult. To start, we need to understand that there are only 4 groups of people that you actually need to satisfy, the Germans, the Czechs, the Hungarians and to a lesser extent the Croats. I think the best way to reform the empire would have been to follow the German federal model in Cisleithania(the Austrian half) and modify it for the Hungarian half. The German Empire was a federal state, with autonomy for the kingdoms and a single federal government. It should have been adopted in the Austrian half, it solves the issues for autonomy while keeping a single federal government in the Austrian half. Bohemia would be given the same status as Bavaria within the German empire, so more autonomy then say Galicia, Moravia or the other crownlands, but still part of the federal system. This keeps the crown part of a single imperial polity. I do not think this would strengthen independence movements, to start, there were none within the empires western half, only reform movements, the czechs wanted autonomy not independence. And I don't think being given a parliament will make them want independence, because every politician in Prague would know that if the empire dissolved, Bohemia would be eaten up by Germany. The czechs weren't disloyal anyway, they just wanted autonomy, and I think they would stay loyal in this scenario. Now for Hungary, I propose that the same increased autonomy given to Bohemia be given to croatia, but croatia is merged with bosnia and dalmatia. This Illyrian kingdom is still part of the Hungarian half but with significant autonomy. And they still maintain a presence in the parliment in budapest. Hungary also needs to be given full male suffrage, the aristocrats were a paper tiger, so it wouldn't be hard to force it through. With full voting rights, the 1848 party would likely lose ground to the liberals and minority parties. I haven't mentioned the poles because they were already the biggest supporters of the Imperial government in OTL. Given autonomy they would be even more satisfied. Galicia doesn't become an issue unless an independent Poland is created, in which case the poles would seek to join that Poland, but until then its fine. I haven't mentioned the Romanians in transylvania because I don't think they are that important, one problem with AH reform ides are that people think EVERY minority group has to be satisfied. This is not true, only the ones with power need to be satisfied. Transylvania is a poor reigon, with little power, and with german and hungarian enclaves. They do not need to be given a federal state, voting rights in Hungary would be enough, there would be some extreme nationalists, but they don't matter in the grand scheme of things. Without a major war, they can't try to do anything against the empire, and considering the amount of ethnic romanians that fought for the empire in ww1, I don't think they would either. So long as the empire maintains prestige and isn't on the verge of collapse, no minority is going to try and break away.
The main issue with your idea is Hungary : The hungarian government wasn't anyhow subjugated to the austrian one, it was only subjugated by treaty to the emperor a a joint austro-hungarian government Hungary from 1867 was basically an independant country willingly delegating some of its functions to a supranational entity From this point, any reform within the hungarian half of the empire would have to be done according to hungarians' will or, at the very least, using a way to bypass the need for their approval (german pressure, war, whatever else) Also Hungary would have never accepted to be reintegrated further within the empire, unlike other minorities (notably the czechs), they knew the real power they had within the "Habsburg system" (and know it since the days of emperor Maximilian) and used it very well against changes that could unfavor them
@@pricel141l I know that Hungary wasn't a part of Austria, in order to achieve my reforms, well the Austrian half would be achieved just fine, but there would need to be force used in Hungary. And I think that has a very high chance of success because 90% of the Hungarian population couldn't vote, the aristocrats were a paper tiger being kept in power by Franz Josephs unwillingness to challenge them. The moment someone like Franz Ferdinand ascended the throne it would have been over for them.
I remember playing a Vic2 mp mod with some lads. One of the formables was "The Three Crowns", for Austria. The guy playing it quickly turned it into a meme by counting up another crown whenever he got another new country annexed to him and, frankly, whenever he felt like larping into existence another crown from his territories. By the end of the session, he was at 11 crowns.
i noticed you marked Kingdom of Croatia of Slavonia , Croatia tehicly became part of hungary by a personal union that why croatia is the only region of hungary with some sort of autonomy
The correct type of reforms for Austria would be federalism but not just tied to ethnicity. Federal states directoy tied to Vienna in a Danubian Republik where you purposely mix up various minoroties so even in majority ethnic states, they still only get at most 60% of the vote
I feel like the main problem with federalizing Austria Hungary fully is that the most likely outcome to trying to take anything more than Croatia from Hungary would result in civil war.

@@thepeak5819 he is talking about usa not Europe i sincerely dont know the point of this argument. Also the immigration issue is the result of the failure of the American socioeconomic structure to adapt to the New cheap and undocumented labor, which causes unrest with the Native population, not because multiculturalism as an Idea is flawed. Take Indonesia for example. It has 300 ethnic groups with 200 language and dialects. yet this doesnt make it an Austro hungarian Empire 2.0. in fact It is considerably stable
I think National Personal Autonomy, a proposal common among the Austrian Social Democrats, would have worked better than any particular territorial arrangement. The idea being to de-couple national autonomy from the land. It also became popular among the Jewish Labor Bund in Russia, becoming an important part of the Bundist movement's ideas. In Austria-Hungary, it would ensure that regardless of where one was located, they could still hold their minority rights, thus making any nationalist territorial questions far less relevant.
Je moet echt een vid maken waarin Oostenrijk-Hongarije waar het tot de dag van vandaag blijft overleven (You really should make a video in which Austria-Hungary survives until the modern day)
I would quite like to see a scenario from you where the empire does reform in a way you can see working and/or where Austria-Hungary doesn't happen in the first place
Their situation is hardly a "perfect" one, being installed at the will of the Francoist dictatorship and now being likely the most disliked extant monarchy of Europe, according to its population. Bourbon Spain might he ongoing now but they can become far better in alternate history.
Thanks for covering Hungary accurately! The population maps however should include uninhabitated areas, as most areas in Transylvania colored as if it was inhabited by Romanians weren't , they were hills and empty areas. Or color them as inhabited by Hungarians, this would change the maps and territories in your future possible Hungarys as well.
So, this video begs the question: what if the Habsburg empire reformed to be a true unified multicultural empire before the two crowns compromise, lets say reforming after or during Napoleon

21:20 if I’m not mistaken, aren’t Galician Ukrainians predominantly Catholic? Religion shouldn’t be an barrier in there, just gold old fashioned ethnic tensions.
Not really. They are Greek Catholics. Basically, they are Orthodox who recognize the Pope as the head of the church.
I always forget there’s more differences in the various rites than just language.
@@alisand sure, but his point stands. Byzantine Catholics, despite their different liturgical traditions, are ultimately still part of the Catholic Church. The tensions would fundamentally be way more ethnic than religious, if religion would even play a role at all.
In 1906 there had been a war plan "U" (= Ungarn/Hungary). If that had happened then reforms might be much more possible.

What if everything went perfect for Austria Hungary (limited to the creation of the Hungarian crown). I want to see how you would save it PH!
Nah,we only need Croatian crown,Croats supported the Empire until 1918
What if Hungary gained full independence in 1867?
What if Marathas decisively defeated Afghans at third battle of Panipat?
Great edit. Yes, we all know that we often forget to consult the kingdom of Hungary when deciding to have consensual sex.
Problem with Hungarian universal suffrage is that upper class people were actually the ones keeping the pro-AH Liberal party in power
The main issue with your idea is Hungary : The hungarian government wasn't anyhow subjugated to the austrian one, it was only subjugated by treaty to the emperor a a joint austro-hungarian government
Hungary from 1867 was basically an independant country willingly delegating some of its functions to a supranational entity
From this point, any reform within the hungarian half of the empire would have to be done according to hungarians' will or, at the very least, using a way to bypass the need for their approval (german pressure, war, whatever else)
Also Hungary would have never accepted to be reintegrated further within the empire, unlike other minorities (notably the czechs), they knew the real power they had within the "Habsburg system" (and know it since the days of emperor Maximilian) and used it very well against changes that could unfavor them
@@pricel141l I know that Hungary wasn't a part of Austria, in order to achieve my reforms, well the Austrian half would be achieved just fine, but there would need to be force used in Hungary.

I like the Blue Danube Waltz being used 9:00, nice reference to Austrian music! 👌👌👌

@@papagaiofilmes6642 Tensions between eastern and western europe are rising, not to mention the whole immigration issue.
@@papagaiofilmes6642 i was refering to Europe as a failed project of multiculturalism.
@@thepeak5819 ok got what you mean now.
My point still stands though.

What if everything went perfect for Hapsburg Spain or Bourbon Spain?
Bourbon Spain is still ongoing.
Their situation is hardly a "perfect" one, being installed at the will of the Francoist dictatorship and now being likely the most disliked extant monarchy of Europe, according to its population. Bourbon Spain might he ongoing now but they can become far better in alternate history.
Let's not forget Trastámara Spain

Thanks for covering Hungary accurately! The population maps however should include uninhabitated areas, as most areas in Transylvania colored as if it was inhabited by Romanians weren't , they were hills and empty areas. Or color them as inhabited by Hungarians, this would change the maps and territories in your future possible Hungarys as well.
So, this video begs the question: what if the Habsburg empire reformed to be a true unified multicultural empire before the two crowns compromise, lets say reforming after or during Napoleon
