$1800 just to make it run again. I will never buy another motorcycle with an immobilizer system. there is no option to get it without that system. entire system, control unit, keys and all locks have to be replaced because that tiny piece of broken plastic. only the dealer can program a new system to the ecu. The ECU will not allow the engine to run unless the immobilizer control unit gives it the ok. there is no way Triumph or any dealer would allow you to delete the immobilizer system. Im not against electronics. Im against being locked out of them. If this happens again, im taking back control, installing a standalone ecu, im tossing the immobilizer, stock ecu, Abs unit, and instrument panel. Ill have custom brake lines made to go directly to calipers. Ill install a standalone ecu probably a microsquirt 3.0 and an aftermarket universal dash. abs and immobilizer will be deleted. Ill now have full control over what happens. No longer need the immobilizer to allow the ecu to work. I can tune the engine how I see fit, stall outs at idle because the mixture is too lean because Triumph was trying to meet an emissions standard? No longer need to beg triumph to fix it, i can fix that my self. I now have full control over the motorcycles electronics. It will be a learning curve for sure but I have the background to pull it off.
Or maybe you should stick to aircooled carbureted motorcycles if you're going to be going to remote spots. I had a TW200, fantastic bulletproof bike, now I have a Suzuki DR650 which is nothing but a TW200 on steroids, just as simple. Glad you're okay, sorry that modern technology let you down at the worst possible time but that's what it does.
That "ring" that is broken is literally just the antenna that reads the chip built into the key. I don't know why you can't just source another one from a motorcycle salvage yard and have it work. I think they're just ripping people off saying that the whole system has to be replaced. :-(
@@BillySBCwhoa you sound like me haha. I’ve had many bikes in the past including the TW200 and I’m currently on a DRZ400sm. It’s basically a TW with some balls 💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼. It’s crazy how all these modern bikes with fancy electronics can actually limit you. I prefer old school bikes. Carburetors ftw 🙌🏼
@@therealrealshocker If manufacturers want to put all that tech from the car world into a street motorcycle then okay fine, I'm not a fan of it but if something goes wrong you call Triple-A and they send a tow truck to get you and your bike, but when they start forcing this stuff on to motorcycles that are going to be going into remote places where the best way to get you out is by helicopter then NO... I don't like it at all. When you get remote out in the bush you want SIMPLICITY, you want something you can fix if it fails, and mostly you want to limit your points of failure. Aircooled carbureted bikes limit your points of failure.
I have a lot of respect for you for posting this video. A lot of people on UA-cam only post the good things and reluctant to show mistakes and mishaps. You owned it and were transparent and shared the whole experience with us.
This is exactly why you want a TW200 or a Suzuki DR650 or a Honda XR650L or some other aircooled carbureted bike if you're going to be going to remote places, there are just too many points of failure on a fuel injected liquid-cooled motorcycle to be taking them way out in the middle of nowhere. As you said, your TW200 never left you stranded, and it never will.
@@davidmatthews3093 You didn't say what was wrong with your DR... What would cause you not to repair it right where it was? But you're right, older tech doesn't mean it won't fail, but it does mean you can 90% of the time fix it where it sits.
Good to see you are safe. Sorry to see the financial implications though. As a recent owner of a 400x the immobiliser electronics are now worrying. Please keep us updated on how you resolve / repair the bike. Any immobiliser bypass strategy or ECU swap out would be helpful to me, and probably a lot of others!!
Thanks! Yeah its insane how much the dealer charged and the entire immobilizer system and key set had to be replaced. They only sell it as a set. Dumbest thing ever. I asked for all the old parts back so I can see if I can figure out a work around
That's a heartbreaking crash. I've dropped mine 3 times in soft mud at low speed and have broken a clutch lever, hand guard and the shift shaft. The price point on these is great, but man they sure don't like to go down. I've known of 4 total riders now who have snapped off the shift shaft. I still love the bike but I have to keep reminding myself to take it easy off road.
Yeah it really was, thats not too bad, the shift shaft was only 25 bucks from the dealer and doesn’t look too hard to replace, hopefully they designed it in a way the shift shaft is the weak point so at least it doesn’t ruin anything else in the transmission. Still not as easy to replace as a clutch lever and can leave you stranded. When I get the bike back im going to install pro taper 1 1/8 in bars and hdb hand guards with fold out mirrors like my tw. And all the crash bars. Hopefully someone will make a spring loaded shift lever for it. Its such a great riding smooth bike. Just not very durable
I'm glad your okay man. Respect to you for keeping as calm as you did despite the bad luck. Nothing makes things worse (for anyone) than losing your cool and not calming down and controlling the old emotions. Over the years I've learned to be wary when I start feeling too happy, (like everything is just perfect and I couldn't be happier) because that's when I get blind sided by something, someone, or most likely my own stupidity.
thanks! yeah that's for sure. Takes practice. just got to focus on the next step to figure the situation out never heard more true words. I just got blind sided by a major back injury at work, had a T12 burst fracture (exploded). barely missed my spinal cord. Somehow by the grace of God I suffered no nerve damage and had emergency surgery with a great surgeon. now part of my back is fused. but at least ill make a full recovery without limitations. My own stupidity usually gets me the most, really need to keep my ego and confidence in check. hopefully the rods in my back will be a good reminder.
Unfortunate on the situation there. Learned quite a few things from this video. Thank you for thst. I too own a scrambler 400x good to know how things are going wrong.. Hope u get back the bike soon.
@@TDubsKid hopefully. Yes indeed it is scary. Luckily you had people passing by to help you and you had a truck to tow away. Imagine no cell reception to call road side assistance of triumph and no one came by. Stranded in jungle with animals. Done 😬
Hey Man, One Of Your Old Subscribers Here! Sorry You Got Off But That's A-lot Of Bike! Too Heavy For An Old Man Going Off-Road! Much Respect For You Over The Years. Your Comment To tw200oldman Says It All. Thank You. (Like #56 - Comment #12)
hey thanks for sticking around! yeah it was hard to get up, flat ground would be easier just it falling into that washout made it extra hard. thanks so much. Back to riding the TW again, just blew a fork seal on it but it's time for a front suspension upgrade and steering bearing overhaul this winter
For sure, its annoying, electronics can be good, my toyota 4runner has fuel injection and they last forever and super reliable. The problem, is the companies are constantly trying to take away peoples right to repair
I almost bought a Triumph a few times over the years... but every time I looked into one I saw way too many issues like this. Sorry to see you have this kind of break in on a brand new bike man, hope you can get it sorted out.
Yeah they are cool bikes and a joy to ride but man a tiny broken plastic piece completely disabling the bike and costs $1200 to fix insane. Ill make sure people are aware in a video, Triumph isn’t going to like it
Sorry to see your new bike down. What a contrast of motorcycles, from a machine that you could roll off a mountain side and ride home, to a glitzy trinket that leaves you stranded in the outback on a common rain rut is huge. A buddy and I have crashed our Honda CRF 300's in rain ruts like that, or worse, many times on BDR routes and they have always got us through the route and back home. It is a pretty motorcycle, and I don't want to bash on it, but I hope it doesn't limit you for how you like to ride.
thanks. yeah pretty crazy, it's a fun bike but it is fragile. idk, I had a friend who completly disabled his crf 250 completely twice while riding, first he broke the sift shaft internally, second he broke a water pump on a rock, yeah that's why I have both bikes. the triumph is great for far away travel
Well done! What an adventure you had. Not the kind you were expecting but glad your ok. Next time take the 4runner with bike on the back and use it as like home base. Do some camping and exploring.
Sorry to hear about your issues, that would grind my gears. I hate being locked out by proprietary software / electronics. This makes me appreciate the TW and it's trusty carb that much more.
I went over the same kind of thing with my DRZ, there was no way i was stopping or going around it so i hung on and that bike just floated over it, in that case speed helped me, thank goodness shes got loads of travel. Glad you didnt get hurt.
Dang dude that sucks. Sorry this happened to you on your new bike. I felt sick to my stomach when it slid out. So fortunate those fellas drove by... That's beyond lucky
Glad you are safe, I hate our CO FS road ruts even more than the wash boards or new gravel, all suck but we have to ride with those to see some of our most beautiful scenery, so I shouldn't complain.
Thank you, yeah they can suck! I should have just been going slower until I learned the road. Even seen ruts 10 feet deep. Yeah not to bad for how much we have to ride out here
Well at least you didn't get hurt, about the bike, it's a great bike but I wish key switch could be relocate were is more protected or may you can come up with something to gurd that area Cheers!
for sure, the most important thing! I do like the bike, yeah that would be good if it was more protected. and they sold that part separately. it was a lot of money to get this fixed
Taking back control....sounds good. I was just checking back , wonder what the status was. Without the skill set the Triumph wouldn't make sense for me. I've always had the theory, expensive bikes are expensive to fix.
Yeah just got it back from the dealer, I got the entire old immobilization system back so might work on trying to figure out a workaround. It would be great if you buy it without the immobilization system. Going to install crash bars, new 1 1/8 pro taper bars, and HDB handguards. It sure is a joy to ride
This is the same for new cars and pickups, also. Too darned much electronics. I just bought a new 2025 Tdub, and I have been ridng a couple of old carbureted Harleys for 20 something years now. So far, I have never had one fail, that I couldn't fix on the road, except once when I broke a drive belt on my old 98 Wide Glide. It wears a final drive chain now and has for many years. I do like an electronic ignition but they have taken things way too far, on purpose so you have to take them back to the dealer to get fixed.
I know, the new tech is great until it isn't haha, that little piece of broken plastic cost $1200 to fix cause they only sell the pick up antenna with the entire key and immobilizer system, with new keys and everything. only the dealer can program a new immobilizer module. should be a $50 part. and it's not to hard to replace and wouldn't need programing if they sold the part separately
I hope your Scrambler is back on the road soon. This video makes me glad that I put Givi engine protection bars on my G310GS. It's not a complicated bike so it doesn't have an immobilizer to be damaged and the design seems fairly crash resistant. I'm an old guy so I ride slowly, less from concern about damaging my bike and more from fear of damaging me. This past weekend I was moto camping with a friend. I was riding up a rocky rutted hill that was becoming steeper. I stopped just before having a crash as shown in this video. Dusk was approaching and I was having trouble seeing far enough to pick a good line. I opted not to ride up the hill to where we camped. I left my bike parked halfway up the hill. In the morning, I left the engine off as I duck walked it backwards down the hill an inch or two at a time, using the clutch to engine brake the rear wheel while I kept both feet on the ground. I turned it around on a flat spot and duck walked it down the hill with the engine off. One of the bits of wisdom that old guys accumulate from a lifetime of bad decision making: Better safe than sodomized. No relying on the kindness of strangers. No all night shuttling vehicles. No trips to the stealership. No ibuprofen.
thanks, got it back but now i'm broken. for sure, I bought all the protection for mine but didn't put it on yet because I wanted to make a video on it. nice thats good, less to go wrong. yeah damaging our selves is the biggest issue. sounds like a close call and you did a good job!
haha yeah my tw200 I bought new has almost 19,000 miles now and it's never left me stranded. just blew a fork seal but it is time for a front suspension upgrade and steering bearing upgrade. time for more videos on the TW200 while I wait 20 years for the dealer to fix it because Triumph engineered these bikes to need the dealer to be fixed
@@TDubsKid Those bikes are too close in similarity for me. That's why I have the TW for the ultimate trail riding never let me down. And I have a Harley Davidson street lightthat I use for my touring. That way I'm really excited when I get to ride either one because they're completely different. And I know you like going on overnight camping you ought to try it on a Harley Davidson. The only difference camping TW is out in the desert somewhere in the Harley or a street bike that you can travel on you do state parks but you're still camping. A lot of times I find places on my HD and then take the TW back to ride those areas
The first scratch is always the hardest. I'm heading to the Isle of Triumph event at Barber Vintage Motorcycle Museum this coming weekend. Gonna take a few test rides and hopefully they'll have some scramblers. Looks like a fun bike!!
Take the L and trade it in, any amount of bolt on improvements you do wouldn't have stopped this from happening. A drz400 or even a wr250r, if you want fuel injection + 6 gears, would be a much better and cheaper option, plus they both have a crazy amount of (cheap) aftermarket available.
Glad u didn't get hurt or majorly stranded in a survival situation.. although i also vote an xr/dr 650 platform. Still have highway leg room. And wont ever leave u stranded for any little reason ever! Plus once you scramble an old platform like the xr/dr platforms its pretty damn sexy and wildly capable.
Yeah wish I could have gotten it without an immobilizer system. My friend had a crf250L and it would break and leave him stranded everytime we rode just about,
I’m sorry that happened. I too made a bit of a mistake. I bought a BMW G310GS and traded my 2015 TW. Reason was similar. In NY there is any real place to enjoy off road unfortunately, so I felt although I enjoyed that bike very very much as far as reliability and ease of maintenance. I wanted to go to further places. Now I’m at the mercy of the dealer and dealer prices. Ugggg!
I saw a nice Honda Transalp 600 for sales on craigslist for you... its a 1990 and has none of that complicated crap. Low seat height and an adventure bike.
@@TDubsKidnext time, DON’T BREAK, twist the throttle and go through. And don’t ever try to pull the bike back onto the correct path. It’s already too late. The only way out is through. You made a mistake there and it’s a great chance to learn from it… Good thing you didn’t hurt yourself!
Thanks for the vids. Neat scenery as always. But regarding this vid, thanks for the reinforcement of similar thinking. Too much technology can ruin your day. Keep up the good work and try to keep the wheels down. 😂 Glad you weren’t hurt either. 👍🏼
Hey no problem, thanks for watching! Thats for sure. it’s also how new vehicles are being engineered so only the dealer can fix them. They lock down the electronics. Im not against electronics. Im against locking me out of them. If this happens again, im taking back control, installing a standalone ecu, im tossing the immobilizer, stock ecu, Abs unit, and instrument panel. Great video. Your previous videos inspired me to get the TW 200. Sorry for your rather expensive mishap. What did the dealer exactly do that cost you $1800? I will look forward to see what you do to your Triumph to make it more user friendly. How you cope with the extra weight and higher seat height compared to the TW? keep up the good work.
Thanks, glad to hear, mostly was an immobilizer system, they only sell the entire system together, and has to be re keyed. And only the dealer can program it. It should be a separate $50 dollar part the key antenna ring. Triumph is not going to like the video im making about it. Other than that its a great bike to ride, just needs crash bars, and hdb handguards, thanks
Glad your not hurt. I've got the Speed 400 which shares the same torquay engine. Like you say its not a dirt bike, the block pattern tyres limit it somewhat, however they are both smashing bikes and I'd be happy with either. Hope you get it fixed up okay.
thanks! me too. nice maybe I should have just got a speed and never went off road. yeah it's not but was fun on some mild off road. me too. only $1800 just to make it run again
@@TDubsKid @TDubsKid Wow $1800, that was my only concern with buying a new bike, what with all the tech/software updates etc, that only the dealer can sort out. I think they make more money from that than selling a new bike. I like servicing my own bikes so once its out of warranty I will have to put up with a wrench on the lcd display.
@TDubsKid Yeah I live in Fort Collins and crashed my first bike on Buckhorn rd up the Poudre canyon. It was my first time in that area and I was riding an old shitty 85' XR350R, throttle got stuck in a corner and I panicked and grabbed front brake and dumped it probably going 25/30. Bike was fine but I was pretty torn up and broke my wrist. I rode the bike back to my vehicle and loaded it up broken wrist n all. Shit happens.
Ah that's too bad, that is very frustrating. IMO, I think you will find the new Triumph will not be as forgiving as the TW is, even with crash protection. It will do fine on gravel road adventures, but its not going to take the abuse with anything more than that. I also read your pinned comment, that seems like a lot of work to go through to bypass the immobilizer and sounds expensive too.
Yeah it was sad. Its more for road and gravel roads for sure, but it was fun riding on that. Probably not doing a standalone, but wanna see if there is a work around
Glad you’re ok and safe. The hit your bike took was kind of hard and right to the instruments… just one advice: perhaps you may want to consider doing some offroad training, as the main reason of your crash was because of the lack of holding the sight to the distance rather than anything else, this is why you didn’t see where you were heading… and then, did a target fixation and had your bike down.
Love the look of the Triumph but think I will pass on buying one now. I like the Dr400 but they are so high in the seat. Was looking forward to these Triumph videos, good luck.
@@ronaldembree3932 I had a TW200, but now I have a DRZ400sm. I absolutely love it. But they sell lowering seats for it and lowering link kits as well if needed. Just fyi 😎
yeah it was cool! it's back again and ill need to do some mods to make it more durable. got an update coming. probably would get a drz400sm if I did it again but i'm keeping the trashumph
As someone who's done WAY TOO MUCH off road adventuring on the wrong motorcyle (honda grom and monkey), I can say that airing down your tires on your tubeless scrambler will really make adventuring off road far better. This allows our grom (with knobbies) and our monkey (tires more like what's on your scrambler) to track and ride so well on the rocky, gravely, and even the fine sandy stuff. Worth a shot experimenting with that! Also, I'm sure you've already gotten it resolved but any car with an immobilizer coil/antenna can be DIY repaired/replaced as none of the programmed integrated circuits actually reside inside of the transponder antenna assembly itself. The code is likely showing as result of open circuit or simply because of the key not being detected. Technology is awesome but also such a bummer sometimes. Sorry you had a rough day! You'll pull through, when it rains it pours!
Yeah lower tire pressure should help for sure, would have been better to go slower since I didn’t know that road too. Yeah the pickup coil should be replaceable by itself, but Triumph doesn’t sell the coil alone, only sells the entire system together. Im going to make a video on everything
Good to see you back in the saddle. It’s been a while since I’ve seen a video from you. That scrambler looks really nice. But that whole tech debacle would irritate me. If you can get up and go, the bike should be able to get up and go. Actually, someone else should be able to ride your bike home even if you can’t. This is a terrible oversight on Triumph’s part. It’s just a shameful way of making people take their bikes to the dealership to charge them stupid amounts of money for something that shouldn’t happen. You have a good attitude about this. Good luck on getting around Triumph’s horrible system. Seriously, shame on Triumph for that. Whoever thought to implement such a system should stay away from motorcycles. Thanks for letting us know about this. I look forward to watching more new T Dubbs Kid vids!
Thanks, I have a lot of tw videos coming, its a fun bike, really great to ride, yeah its dumb, they should at least allow that pickup ring replaceable by itself easy so you can carry a spare vs having to replace the entire system and only the dealer can program it. Yeah its a way to make dealships to make money so they will carry their brand. More vids to come
It's great to see you out exploring. Sorry about the rough ending to your day. :( What a fun looking bike! Great mileage and range. That bites about the immobilizer. I had an older Saab. It was a blast to run, but one year it decided the ECU would die. That took getting it to the only dealership in 100 miles that could work on it and thousands to fix. A year later it decided to unpair with both of my keys and I was told that the whole security interlock and keys may need to be replaced for thousands again. I have a love hate relationship with electronics. :( I've been eyeballing the Himalayan 450 and the CF Moto 450. Your experience made me look and it sounds like most new bikes have an immobilizer. Now that I think about it, a Dork in the Road video had him loose a key on some bike, it kept going but then coudn't restart due to the immobilizer. That is discouraging. I would want to remove that tech to trust it for back country exploring.
Thanks! Yeah wasn’t the best. Wish you could get it without the immobilizer I hear you about the saab I had a 9-3 bought for $5000 all the modules slowly started going bad on it. Loved driving it and it got hail damaged and totaled and got $3700 back on it kept driving it. And eventually sold it for $800 but drove it for 6 years. Got my moneys worth Those are cool bikes but Yeah the immobilizers are so annoying for off road and adventure. Need to find ways around them
I remember when the immobilizer on my T-dub left me stranded. I wait…… I definitely want the most simple bike if I’m going to be off in the woods 50+ miles away from anything.
I guess todays manufacturers have a different definition of a scrambler. The old Honda scramblers were bullet proof but more street than dirt. These new bikes seem to be scramblers in looks only. Glad you’re OK, but what a night. Guess you have to go through these things to really appreciate the good times.
That sucks especially since you didn’t have crash guards on but not sure it would have helped with the immobilizer. Have the same bike but don’t really taking it off road more of a commuter..customized it like a bigger speed 400. I like triumph but with electronics they are issues that go with that. Dad had a triumph and love the retro looks but always seem to enjoy my Royal Enfields more with simpler electronics and cheap parts. Currently had to take it in for an update cause the know stalling issue still persists
Yeah the worst part is I had all the crash bars just not installed yet. Yeah that probably would have prevented a lot of the damage. Yeah they at least need to sell the parts individually rather than selling the entire thing and only the dealer can program it. Im getting all the parts back so I can try and figure out a work around. More videos to come!
I have gotten a good low mile used TW200 for the price of your repair bill! Lucky you did not get hurt, 400 pounds and rocks is a BAD combo for sure. I would never buy a bike with security features, sidestand switches and neutral interlocks are bad enough....
Haha I bet, I just have no need for another tw. It would have been cheap if they sold just the part that was broke. They are going to get called out in a video. Me too, getting hurt sucks. Yeah wish it came as an option
Clean it up sell it and consider it a lesson learned It will happen again My tw usually gets mpg in the eighties Fuel injection is not a plus on a motorcycle in my opinion I have four bikes two are injected and the added complexity adds little in my opinion Wish all four were carbed
Naa not worth it wont get much for a bike with a crash on its record. If this happens again I will be installing a standalone ecu, and deleting the bs making this thing the way modern bikes should be
That immobilizer sounds nice for a city bike, but for a scrambler or anything you use off road, that sounds terrible. I bought a TW 200 and learned alot of maintenance from your videos. It's a great little bike and I love the look of it. To bad it's hard to find nearby off roading places in the west coast where i am at, but I still love it as my first bike.
Hmm... Recently I washed my 400x. At the back of the engine there is a spot where the water accumulates. To get rid of this water, I tilted and leaned the bike on its left side as low as the handlebars touched the ground. After that, I couldn't star the bike. Tried for over 20min without a result. Then, I leaned the bike to the other side for few seconds, lifted it straight up, and the bike started. I guess it has something to do with the fuel pump or perhaps a tilt sensor.
Wow thats pretty crazy I wonder why it wouldn’t start, maybe there is a tilt sensor for the traction control but I doubt it would cause the engine to not start
sorry to hear that, hope your ok. I shattered one of my vertebrae early November, had emergency surgery and now have metal rods in my back, very lucky to not be paralyzed.
@TDubsKid I am fine... Almost on the podium of a mtb race 10 weeks after the crash, with only six week training against experts 😂 and now I'm playing hockey 5 times a week. I'm built different 🤣
I don't want to be that guy but being disabled and unable to ride upright on regular bikes I've been looking at the Can-Am Ryker Rally or Canyon depending on how much I can save towards them over the next year or so. Based on super dependable hardware - Rotax engines, even! Like a goldwing but very hard to tip over; saddle bags and trailer hitch get me plenty of camping gear and maybe even a small pop up trailer...
no worries at all, really makes sense, great there is machines like this for people who have disabilities. I recently came very close to becoming a paraplegic with a major back injury about a month ago. Its so great when you don't let a disability stop you from adventure
Cool bike otherwise but man that sucks. It's not as good looking but I think the DR650 might be a better choice.. lighter weight, similar power, more torque, better suspension, old fashion Japanese reliability, etc.. low seat height too. Kinda like a bigger TDub. DRZ400 is cool too but seat height might be a deal breaker for you. I'd be tempted to trade that in if that happened to me!
Yeah it was a very fun and joy to ride bike, but its crazy how a tiny broken plastic piece completely disables the bike and costs $1200 to fix 😂 yeah for sure, im stuck with this bike though, going to armor it up and do some mods
Amazing how stuff up on the handlebars get smashed when you would suspect only the bar ends and levers would be in the impact range. Those engine guards would have maybe saved the gear shifter? So sad to get that much damage at lower speeds.
Yeah its crazy, thats what happens when its on very uneven ground, may have helped if I had Highway dirt bikes handguards and crash bars on, going to do some upgrades
SORRY about your crash, TDK, but it coulda been a LOT worse, hey ? YOU walked away unscathed. This is a good example of why one should always have a riding buddy along (on their own bike) when you start exploring 'forest roads.' Morning hours are better than late afternoons when 'cutting new trails.' And the BIG takeaway here is: RIDE A BIKE YOU CAN LIFT BY YOURSELF WITHOUT RUPTURING YOUR BELLY OR HERNIATING A DISC. A dual sport in the 300cc to 400cc range just might be 'the sweet spot' for you.... Happy Trails, Son !
thanks, yeah could always be worse. for sure. yeah a riding buddy is nice but not always available. I can lift it fine by myself, the problem is when it's have upside down in a wash. thanks
Yeah for sure, I have what I need to spend the night and stay warm but sure was nice getting a ride home, crazy the guys in the truck got stuck in the mud in a similar area and somebody helped them out a while back haha
I've got a 400X also, in red. This is a shock to hear about this problem, but you won't be the last one to dump their Scrambler and be "immobilized". This will hopefully get the attention of Triumph and a fix or workaround will be developed. They have sold thousands of these worldwide and I suspect the Speed 400 has the same problem. It is not excessively heavy (395 lbs) for a bike of this type. The new Himalayan 450 is about 25 pounds heavier. If Triumph or the dealer can't figure out a cheaper way to fix this then there will probably be an aftermarket fix. Kinda stupid set up since it already has an RFID equipped key needed to start it. When you park it and remove the key I believe the Immobilizer is active for about 24 hours and you need the RFID key to start it. This was probably designed with Britain in mind where bike thefts are very common. Keep us posted. It' a great bike otherwise.
Yeah its pretty terrible, the antenna for the key chip appears to be separate but they only sell the entire system as 15 cost $1200 to replace and could only be programmed by the dealer. Should be a $50 dollar part and not too hard to swap out and would have no effect on security. Im going to be doing a video shedding light on this issue titled “tiny broken plastic piece on my triumph completely disabled the bike and costs $1200 to fix” I hope it blows up and triumph actually makes a change
I was thinking, could you not break out into a new area along with the van camping? My suggestion is an E-Bike. Very huge range of power and types. Dual motor bikes that can climb any hills.. huge variety of battery types with range good for all day. Weight under 100 lbs up to 150 lbs. Speeds up to 50 mph and off road capabilities like a dirt bike depending on price. So many E bikes for every purpose. I think you could make something work in place of a motorcycle. There is a huge following of E-bikes now. Many opportunities to get free stuff to test on UA-cam.
Been watching you for years, before the mask came off too ! I must admit that I was surprised to see you on that Triumph. What was your reason for choosing that bike ?
Sorry about the crash/damage! Its not really a dirt bike, or even much of a scrambler. Looks great, nice power and features, but expensive to own. Valve checks are not simple like the TW200, and all the electronics and water cooling turn me off. I have had a Royal Enfield Himalayan and now have a Scram 411 which is built for off road and rough service. Those bikes are inexpensive and simple, parts are dirt cheap and its easy to service the bike in your garage. The weight is low so even though they are on the heavy side, they do dirt well. Does the bike still shift ok? Maybe you could fix that part (if needed) yourself and just have the shop replace the key switch?
Thanks, yeah its fun off road but delicate. This would be as much as an issue if they sold the key antenna by itself, it should be a $50 part at most. Yeah just needed a new shift shaft. Only $25 part just had the dealer do it all cause insurance was paying for it. Triumph is gonna get called out in another video though. Yeah wish I would have gone with something without an imobilizer system
You where very lucky those guys turned up and wernt serial killers, more people disappear in collerado than most other places. You want to try picki.g up a hayabusa and see how you get on, happy you made it, golden rule of off roading ."Never go alone".
Should have made sure you had upper and lower crash bars at the start. Never buy a bike you can't lift. I have no problem picking up my 500# 1200xc, but I deadlift over 400, so that was a consideration
Ouch! Did you use your insurance to help cover this? My brother had a trans alp with an unreliable immobilizer. At the end replaced most components, and still had the problem and just sold it to quit the worry ... If you do a rebuild without immobilizer, that would be an interesting youtube video indeed! Thank you for sharing!
Yeah I did, hopefully it only effects my motorcycle premiums since those are cheap. For sure may try to figure out a way to bypass it. Wish I could have bought it without an immobilizer
Bummer about that little spill stranding you. There is something to said about keeping things simple, like having a good platform and not changing it for 37 years. But my real question is your recommendation for the best phone app, such as Trail Forks, All Trails and similar, to navigate back country routes. You seem so adept at it on your videos and I always wonder what app you're using, or if you recommend a certain model GPS unit over a phone app where you can download a map and use it when you don't have cell service. Any wisdom is appreciated. Thank you, John. (Elizabeth is my wife FYI).
Yeah it’s a bummer when you’re stranded in the backcountry but there’s always something to learn. Old tech is just so durable I'll talk about navigation apps in a future video. There are pros and cons to everything
Had a similar incident on my street triple where the ignition cylinder itself broke after a spill. After a bit of troubleshooting I was able to get the coils back into 'on' position (my key and such were fine, solely the ignition housing broke), taped it up so that it stayed in the on position, and then made the nerve wracking 40 minute ride back home. Didnt quit on me once though, and cant help but wonder if my frame sliders were already installed, would the ignition have even broke? Seems like a really unfortunate situation you had, cant say id take my bike offroad without beefing it up first. Triumph bikes are mechanically sound, its the electrical gremlins that make me worry
Yeah thats rough when that breaks, im mostly upset, you cant just replace the pick up coil around the key itself. Right now the entire key set and lock has to be replaced. Good to know, wish I could have got it without the immobilizer system
I wonder If a small windscreen like a DART windscreen might avoiding this situation🤔, I honestly cannot understand how you managed to hit the ignition key holder, at first I tought the Culprit was going to be the shifter shaft but it seems at least you were able to put it in gear (or so it seems) on my Street Twin 900 when I fell with it the shifter shaft just snapped from the inside and I couldn't put it in gear, luckily I wasn't in the middle of nowhere.
Maybe or some kind prtection bar of some kind, crash bars may have prevented this as well. Yeah the instrument cluster was pushed into it with enough force to break it but didn’t break the instrument cluster. Yeah im really hoping its just the shift shaft
I will NEVER buy a bike with an immobilizer that you cant overwright. Shame on Triumph for such a horrible design flaw. This can kill people by leaving them stranded in the middle of nowhere. Glad you got a little lucky with those fellas that gave you a ride.
yeah it's messed up, they should sell the parts separately, should be a $50 part, it's just an antenna. yeah I'm going to a video call out triumph with this issue
@@TDubsKid The technology they put on street bikes doesn't belong on dualsport bikes. If it fails on a street bike you call Triple-A and they send a tow truck to get you and your bike, if it happens 40 miles out in the bush like you were then you have a serious problem... No way am I taking a liquid-cooled fuel-injected motorcycle out to the middle of nowhere, that requires way too much trust in modern technology.
What a rough day, hitting the deer on the way out really is the cherry on top of it too. That's such a beautiful bike but having fancy extras like an immobilizer is why I avoid European bikes, better to keep it simple imo.
Super awesome content regardless no matter your troubles their you really promoted yourself with that one no matter the loss of time 1 heck of a ride
I have a lot of respect for you for posting this video. A lot of people on UA-cam only post the good things and reluctant to show mistakes and mishaps. You owned it and were transparent and shared the whole experience with us.
Thanks, I don’t mind showing my mistakes. Thanks for watching!
Well said
This comment is on point.
It’s not that simple. My DR125 stopped on me and I had to get it home to repair it. Older doesn’t always mean less likely to breakdown.
@@davidmatthews3093 You didn't say what was wrong with your DR... What would cause you not to repair it right where it was? But you're right, older tech doesn't mean it won't fail, but it does mean you can 90% of the time fix it where it sits.
He didn't have the fucking tools and parts to repair it. Shit happens, and either bike isn't plain superior
Thanks for the heads up. The XT250 Yamaha I was looking at now looks a LOT better.
Yeah not as fast but reliable
Good to see you are safe. Sorry to see the financial implications though. As a recent owner of a 400x the immobiliser electronics are now worrying. Please keep us updated on how you resolve / repair the bike. Any immobiliser bypass strategy or ECU swap out would be helpful to me, and probably a lot of others!!
Thanks! Yeah its insane how much the dealer charged and the entire immobilizer system and key set had to be replaced. They only sell it as a set. Dumbest thing ever. I asked for all the old parts back so I can see if I can figure out a work around
Sorry to hear about the scrambler. You'd think such a beautiful, rugged machine wouldn't be so fragile.
Thanks, yeah haha not in this day and age
Takes practice. just got to focus on the next step to figure the situation out
never heard more true words.
Glad you are safe. Sad to see that a slip causes that much damage.
thanks! that's the most important thing. yeah its insane how much damage there was from that little spill
Unfortunate on the situation there. Learned quite a few things from this video. Thank you for thst. I too own a scrambler 400x good to know how things are going wrong..
Hope u get back the bike soon.
Yeah it really is, so dumb how little plastic part with copper winding in it disabled the bike and costs soooo much to fix
Hopefully it will be fixed by next spring
@@TDubsKid hopefully. Yes indeed it is scary. Luckily you had people passing by to help you and you had a truck to tow away. Imagine no cell reception to call road side assistance of triumph and no one came by. Stranded in jungle with animals. Done 😬

hey thanks for sticking around! yeah it was hard to get up, flat ground would be easier just it falling into that washout made it extra hard. thanks so much. Back to riding the TW again, just blew a fork seal on it but it's time for a front suspension upgrade and steering bearing overhaul this winter
@@TDubsKid Yeah! Sounds Like We'll Be Seeing A Video On Front-End Overhaul In The Future, Huh!?! Thank You. (Like #3)
Big ups for showing the good, bad, and ugly sides of your triumph experience.
No problem, im not about showing you just the happy stuff
That really sucks, sorry to hear that. New bikes have way too much electronics.
For sure, its annoying, electronics can be good, my toyota 4runner has fuel injection and they last forever and super reliable. The problem, is the companies are constantly trying to take away peoples right to repair
So lucky those guys happened to be driving through there.
Yeah especially cause there was pretty much nobody out there
I almost bought a Triumph a few times over the years... but every time I looked into one I saw way too many issues like this. Sorry to see you have this kind of break in on a brand new bike man, hope you can get it sorted out.
Exact same. This sealed the deal for me. No triumph, ever.
Yeah they are cool bikes and a joy to ride but man a tiny broken plastic piece completely disabling the bike and costs $1200 to fix insane. Ill make sure people are aware in a video, Triumph isn’t going to like it
Good filming and editing. I enjoyed this very much.sorry to hear about your bike. Thanks for the heads up. I’m glad you’re OK
Hey thanks! Yeah it was a sad day. I wouldn’t have bought it if I knew about the fragile immobilizer system. Yeah being not injured is most important
Thanks! Yeah it was an adventure, not what I had expected but glad it all worked out. Good idea, I do that with my tw sometimes
Sorry to hear about your issues, that would grind my gears. I hate being locked out by proprietary software / electronics.
This makes me appreciate the TW and it's trusty carb that much more.
Thanks, yeah me to, I like fixing my own stuff, the right to repair is going away. Simple just works
I went over the same kind of thing with my DRZ, there was no way i was stopping or going around it so i hung on and that bike just floated over it, in that case speed helped me, thank goodness shes got loads of travel. Glad you didnt get hurt.
Yeah I almost made it through but not quite. Thanks me too
Dang dude that sucks. Sorry this happened to you on your new bike. I felt sick to my stomach when it slid out. So fortunate those fellas drove by... That's beyond lucky
yeah not fun, glad I got it back, but only took $1800 to make it run again
Beautiful bike. You'll have it like new in no time. It'll be even more special.
For sure! It is a good looking bike and a joy to ride, time to mod it up
Sorry the see your crash and after hear that about tech problem bro. I hope will ride again without any issue like that. ✌️
thanks! Me too
Glad you are safe, I hate our CO FS road ruts even more than the wash boards or new gravel, all suck but we have to ride with those to see some of our most beautiful scenery, so I shouldn't complain.
Thank you, yeah they can suck! I should have just been going slower until I learned the road. Even seen ruts 10 feet deep. Yeah not to bad for how much we have to ride out here
Well at least you didn't get hurt, about the bike, it's a great bike but I wish key switch could be relocate were is more protected or may you can come up with something to gurd that area
Cheers!
for sure, the most important thing! I do like the bike, yeah that would be good if it was more protected. and they sold that part separately. it was a lot of money to get this fixed
Ugh, what a BUMMER!!!! But also, now you'll learn so much about the Triumph. 😅 Another W for the Tdubs. Hahaha. They will never fail us!
Amen, I've had two and they are AWESOME.
Yeah it really bummed me out! True, I just hate how only the dealer can fix the immobilizer system, so annoying
Yeah the tw just keeps going, I did just blow a fork seal on it though
My TW I bought brand new it has 10000 miles. I do a lot of desert riding and I have fallen
many times but it has never left me out in the desert‼
haha yeah my tw200 I bought new has almost 19,000 miles now and it's never left me stranded. just blew a fork seal but it is time for a front suspension upgrade and steering bearing upgrade. time for more videos on the TW200 while I wait 20 years for the dealer to fix it because Triumph engineered these bikes to need the dealer to be fixed
A lot of times I find places on my HD and then take the TW back to ride those areas
me too! I have a tw200 with 4k miles... all over blm desert by Grand Junction. I have dumped it many times.

The first scratch is always the hardest. I'm heading to the Isle of Triumph event at Barber Vintage Motorcycle Museum this coming weekend. Gonna take a few test rides and hopefully they'll have some scramblers. Looks like a fun bike!!
yeah it really is! it's gonna look way cooler with protaper bars, HDB handguards and mirrors and crash bars though
2:46 lol
Take the L and trade it in, any amount of bolt on improvements you do wouldn't have stopped this from happening. A drz400 or even a wr250r, if you want fuel injection + 6 gears, would be a much better and cheaper option, plus they both have a crazy amount of (cheap) aftermarket available.
i'm keeping it
Good luck man glad I saw this before I bought that bike guess I’ll stick with my tw200 till I find something better
Thanks! Wanted people to know, at least get something without an immobilizer system
AHHHHH man... glad you're safe dude, you hate to see it, but i'm sure it'll ride again before yoy know it

Thanks, but im prepared for survival, could have been fun. Sounds cool but im keeping this bike
Glad your alright, that looked like a rough slam.
Thanks! Yeah it was just on the bike
Good to know! These rigs were looking fun! I'll stick to my CRF300L!

Man I'm sorry that happened! Glad you got out. Looked like a struggle loading it
Thanks! Yeah it was a pain I was tired and my back was thrown out
I’m sorry that happened. Ugggg!
Thanks, yeah I kept my TW200, the new bikes are not like the old ones. Yeah makes sense. It sucks they make them a pain to work on
I saw a nice Honda Transalp 600 for sales on craigslist for you... its a 1990 and has none of that complicated crap. Low seat height and an adventure bike.
Nice, I need all of the bikes haha

I dropped my Honda crf250L maybe about 100 times in 7 years. Bent the gear lever a few times but a strong stick fixed that so never been stranded.
Nice!

You are very inspiring I should go further on my Yamaha xt250
Thanks so much! Next 2 videos me and another youtuber go on a 2 night motocamping adventure, he rides an xt250
The way it whimpered after it fell. Heartbreaking.
Yeah it was in pain
tdub in the garage has a dirty grin
Haha
This is in #1 of my longlist for my first bike, may go for a honda xr150L instead
Yeah the xr150L is a good bet
I learned quick, those deep ruts will take you every time
Yeah especially when your zoomin and font know the roads
Sorry to see you upset such a nice-looking bike. Hopefully, it can be fixed.
Yeah it sucks but getting fixed, just pricy 😵
Hate it man, happens quick to the best of us! Yep, I agree, Immobilizers belong on Mercedes etc, not a scrambler. Hope you get her fixed up quick!!
Thanks
What a fun looking bike!
I've been eyeballing the Himalayan 450 and the CF Moto 450.
Wish you could get it without the immobilizer
I hear you about the saab I had a 9-3 bought for $5000 all the modules slowly started going bad on it. Loved driving it and it got hail damaged and totaled and got $3700 back on it kept driving it. And eventually sold it for $800 but drove it for 6 years. Got my moneys worth
Those are cool bikes but Yeah the immobilizers are so annoying for off road and adventure. Need to find ways around them
I remember when the immobilizer on my T-dub left me stranded.
I wait…… I definitely want the most simple bike if I’m going to be off in the woods 50+ miles away from anything.
haha yeah simplicity is great on a motorcycle. all these modern engineered bikes are fragile
@@TDubsKid cars too
I guess todays manufacturers have a different definition of a scrambler.
The old Honda scramblers were bullet proof but more street than dirt.
These new bikes seem to be scramblers in looks only.
Glad you’re OK, but what a night. Guess you have to go through these things to really appreciate the good times.
Yeah it sucks, its the way all vehicles are going, I miss the older vehicles that had enough technology but not too much
That sucks especially since you didn’t have crash guards on but not sure it would have helped with the immobilizer.
Clean it up sell it and consider it a lesson learned
It will happen again
My tw usually gets mpg in the eighties
Fuel injection is not a plus on a motorcycle in my opinion I have four bikes two are injected and the added complexity adds little in my opinion
Wish all four were carbed
Naa not worth it wont get much for a bike with a crash on its record. If this happens again I will be installing a standalone ecu, and deleting the bs making this thing the way modern bikes should be
Right, and you can open up a carburetor on the side of the ditch with probably just a pocketknife
Yeah wish it was an option or removable but its not unfortunately. Glad to help! Its a great first bike
@@TDubsKid I am not sure but it must be something to do with the fueling as the engine was turning but not starting.
Yeah... I crashed mt TW in may, had a terrible concussion and still have to work on the bike again in October! Shit happened 🤷 wish you luck 🤞
sorry to hear that, hope your ok.
@ Oh yeah you have the ability to toughen up the weak points and turn it into a tank. It’s still a very cool bike IMO. I can see why you bought it.
@TDubsKid kind of surprised you didn't go with a KTM 390. But nice bike!
I can lift it fine by myself, the problem is when it's have upside down in a wash. thanks
@@TDubsKid 👍
LOOKED, like a nice bike. I guess beauty really is, only skin deep.
It could be a great bike just get rid of immobilizer system, traction control and abs. Unfortunately thats the only way they come
What a crap day. Oh well walking at night through the forest would have been worse. Thank God help showed up.
I got a folding fat tire ebike, was planning on making a video with it at some point
New tires and bars, bummer all around.
Yeah need to do some work on it
Been watching you for years, before the mask came off too ! I must admit that I was surprised to see you on that Triumph. What was your reason for choosing that bike ?
Thanks for watching for so long! I just loved the way it looked and such a smooth fun bike to ride with enough power
I remember being so disappointed when I saw you bought a Triumph. Lol. I’d like to see what you do with a Honda Trail 125.
Its a smooth fun bike to ride, just very fragile
I would say good buy to that bike for sure. Drz 400 with some mods would be heeps better
@@pigeonpallz1733 I also think he’d enjoy a DRZ400sm
Yeah would be a cool bike but Ill be keeping this one for now
Sorry about the crash/damage!
Yeah most people around here are friendly. I need to stay away from the high power stuff, too many injuries already
Just be prepared
Wonder if the area is known to be ex volcanic caldera in history ?
Reminds me of Northern East NSW in Australia
I have no idea, its not an active volcanic area like Yosemite wy. roads get washed out easy from heavy rains though
Should have made sure you had upper and lower crash bars at the start.
Never buy a bike you can't lift. I have no problem picking up my 500# 1200xc, but I deadlift over 400, so that was a consideration
Yeah, I can lift it, just harder when a bike is off camber in a wash
Wow that sucks Wes, you got to love and hate technology.
Yeah for sure, it can be great but also be bad
Yeah Im wondering if the crash bars would have saved it as well
Sorry about the crash! Yeah, I wont buy any modern bike with rider aids or stupid eletronics. Gimme old school!
Thanks, yeah its annoying, sure is an amazing bike to ride when its working though
what happened with the shift shaft?
Bent and it seems the pedal stripped out the splines, hopefully that all it is
"need to get the crash bars before I dump it..." - Foreshadowing?
Glad you're okay and were able to recover the bike. Sucks about the damage :(
Haha yeah should have been going slower before installing the crash bars. Yeah being ok is most important
Bummer bro. Part of the adventure is are the falls
Yeah, so true
Disconnect and reconnect the battery. See if it resets.
Good idea but The pickup coil for the key antenna is broke cause it was molded into the plastic
Bummer dude. That is a really cool bike.
for sure, just a very fragile bike haha
@@TDubsKid The technology they put on street bikes doesn't belong on dualsport bikes. If it fails on a street bike you call Triple-A and they send a tow truck to get you and your bike, if it happens 40 miles out in the bush like you were then you have a serious problem... No way am I taking a liquid-cooled fuel-injected motorcycle out to the middle of nowhere, that requires way too much trust in modern technology.
I should have known that you liked Adventure Time
Wooo adventure time 🙌
Based on your experience, would you recommend this motorcycle?
No because the immobilizer system is dumb and you cant reset the service indicator without the dealer
Sorry about your bike man. Stuff happens so fast.
Hey thanks, it really does, should have been going slower
What a rough day, hitting the deer on the way out really is the cherry on top of it too.
That's such a beautiful bike but having fancy extras like an immobilizer is why I avoid European bikes, better to keep it simple imo.
yeah it was rough but I have had worse. yeah wish you could buy it cheaper without immobilizer
How does that bike carrier haul the heavier bike?
Do you know if the carrier is rated for 600lbs?
It does ok, carrier is rated for 500lbs new bike is 400lbs
Dude y u didn't get engine guards for the bike ?
I did just didn’t put them on yet, cause I want to make a video on it
