The snow is fun. I like winter time. I'm in Alberta. And it gets to -40c (-40F) at times. You get used to it. You acclimate to it. It's becomes normal.
Hi. I am a Finnish girl so I also live in the north, but it is interesting that the climate is a bit different because of the gulf stream and such. Like my town is above Yellowknife in latitude. The leaves come in May in my town and it start to get minus (Celsius) degrees in November. I am a nerd so I googled cities in the north and searched for Yellowknife and found this video. Well filmed, good job. I wish I had money to travel to north Canada.
yeah Yellowknife is much colder than Finland and It isn't even the coldest city in Canada, Iqaluit is Iqaluit averages February Windchill lows of -44C.
I spent the first 28 years of my life in St.Thomas, ON and now live in Yellowknife. Nice to see someone from my hometown document their trip to Yellowknife. Welcome man! Glad you got to experience it.
I have to say 2 things. First, thanks for taking me to a place I've always wanted to visit. Second, you guys picked a brutal time of year to do this little adventure. But, at least you didn't have to share your blood with the "skeeters." A road trip isn't complete without a stop at Mickey D's/Ronald's House/Golden Arches Supper Club. Lastly, as an older person, thanks for your decency--no 4-letter words from any of you.
As a resident of Yellowknife I get to do what you did every winter, without the truck camping of course. Do a summer vid. Be aware of bugs and bears. Awesome video.
Hi there! My friend and I decide to drive to Yellowknife in December. And since you live in there, I wanna ask will minivan be available during winter there? Or pickup truck works better? Thx!
I didn't notice any drone shots until you were tow snowboarding. Did you meet someone with a drone while you were there or did you only bring one out that once?
Probably one of the best videos I've seen in a LONG time. Seriously, thanks for sharing this with the world! Love from Montreal, QC. Visiting NWT is definitely on my bucket list!
Loved the video. I drove to Yellowknife from Edmonton in August 2000 when a good chunk of the road was unpaved. Had an elk burger at Wildcat Cafe. Spent about 3 days there. It was amazing. Definitely want to go back
I'm from Southeatern Louisiana in the U.S. (very bottom of the country)....I have lots of ancestors from the NW Territories and in Quebec. It is my wish to one day visit Northern Canada. I currently live in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and the winters and summers are amazing.
At 5:36, he says he's got piercing pain in his feet. Well, that's exactly why I moved to the west coast of Canada. I don't miss all that snow and ice and cold at all. It is beautiful, though.
Thank you for this! I lived in Yellowknife for a year and this brought back soo many memories. Climbing that fire tower in winter must have been terrifying, I climbed it in summer and it had my heart racing!
Greetings from Russia! I'm in love with Canadian nature! All these views you've shown in this video are picturesque! I really wish that one day I'll have the same road trip with my friends! Thank you for this video, it was such a pleasure to watch it!
man i just moved back to cape breton island after spending almost 9 years in YK I've seen this video several times but this time it just hits me more what a beautiful place Yellowknife is the whole NWT actually great video brother!!
LOVED YOUR AWSOME ADVENTURE TRAVEL. HERE IN LONDON ITS NOT GETING AS MUCH SNOW AS 30 YEAR AGO, AWSOME VIDEO WILL WATCH MORE YOUR ADVENTURES. KEEP IT UP
Wonderful, fantastic, and thank you guys for sharing. I am sure you guys worked hard to compile the videos for the rest of us and much appreciate that. I don't need to come all the way and freeze in NWT. but surely plan to visit a few best places in Alberta. A big thanks from Dubai
Damn, this is making me homesick. Went back this summer (2016), 36 years after moving to Vancouver, bc. But I miss nothing more than Yellowknife winters. Thanks for sharing.
Boys, BEAUTY JOB capturing my home town and all its natural northern cold goodness bros!!! Should of gotten a birds-eye view of my community of Dettah and planes landing on the ice and the good ole Gold Range and last but not least the Pilots Monument.
Just a great video - I will be traveling up there this summer 2017 and looking forward to seeing much of what you had - but not in the cold weather. Thanks - great Job
this is awesome I am in Minnesota witch most people think is part of Canada but you guys are way tougher than me but I do like to have a beer or all of them great video thanks and be safe.
Seeing this 5 years later. Great video guys. I used to dream about taking a road trip to the Arctic. Realistically now with my medical issues I have to accept it's never going to happen. Not that I'm at death's door or anything, but I can't afford to be on remote Arctic roads with no medical care nearby. If I ever visit Yellowknife, I'll have to fly in. Thanks for letting me live vicariously through your video :)
I’ve followed North American weather stats back 50-60 years. Yellowknife used to be colder than it is now. Climate change has had its greatest effects in far north latitudes. So, although it’s still a cold winter, it’s a lot more liveable than before. And what a pretty place! Look at the purity of that snow.
I drove the same route to Yellowknife from Waterloo, Ontario, then south again via Dawson Creek then via the Alaska Hwy to Inuvik, then drove the MacKenzie River Ice road to Tuktoyaktuk. I delivered juices, pop and a few computers for the kids, I was alone and slept out 9 nights of the 21 days I was on the trip. The Dempster is incredible, I driven it both in winter and summer.
Great video!. Made me laugh. Have not been that far north but I have been to Saskatoon with my Canadian wife to visit in-laws in the winter and we had temps at -50 for several days. Walking on the snow sounded like styrofoam squeeking all the time.
I wish I could just pack up and drive to Yellowknife! I've been wanting to see the northern lights for a long time! Great video guys, really glad I found this!
After watching this video, I did this trip in my stock 2003 Cadillac Escalade with a set of winter tires last Feburary back when I was living in Fort McMurray! We loved the drive from Fort Mac up to the end of the winter roads north of Fort MacKay but found the drive long and tedious after leaving the national park and driving on the gravel / pavement up to Yellowknife via Fort Smith. The highway up is really rough and was super icy / sketchy. It also snowed a ton while were on the road and was pushing snow with my front bumper on the way home haha!
Perhaps the best travel video I have watched. I am reading anon fiction book about Alexander MacKenzie at the moment and his journey to the Arctic. You guys are amazing!
I spent 66-68 in Fairbanks and it was sort of like what you saw. I thought that below -20 F the ice wasn't slick any more. We had a couple times when it would be -40 when I went to bed and thawing when i got up. Then by evening it would be frozen again. Saw the Northern Lights several times and they were brilliant.
Pretty good video. I’m a resident of Yellowknife I’ve been here for 44 years. I’ve been in the aurora viewing tour business for 22 years. I’ve done almost 3000 tours. Most down the Ingram trail. It’s too bad I didn’t run into you guys . I would of put you up at our cabin. Maybe next time.
My piano teacher and her husband are going to Calgary, Fort Smith, Hay River and Yellowknife the first two weeks of August. The bugs will still be pretty bad, so I told her to tuck her pant cuffs into her socks (it works!) She also doesn’t want to camp unless it’s a 4-star hotel, but there’s not a whole lot up there. She and her younger sister were born in Three Hills, Alta. (about an hour and a half east then north of Calgary, about 50 km from Drumheller) but moved back here to Hamilton, Ont. when they were 3 and 1 respectively.
Hey guys awesome video. I live in Yellowknife and it's nice to see it from a fresh prospective. You haven't experienced the true winter though (Im talking about -60 C with the wind!) If you ever come up again make sure you come see the ice castle, it wont disappoint.
Nice clip! Wouldn't mind visiting the north of Canada sometime! Live in the very north of Norway myself, north of 70° N - enjoy it both summer and winter!
Awesome video Luke. I've been wanting to visit Yellowknife for a long time now. I'm from the states, specifically Missouri. I've driven to Edmonton and back before and spent some time in Jasper. I've been to many of the major cities in Canada and love them all. Halifax and Yellowknife are still on my list. Recently we all had some extreme temps and I checked Yellowknife one night and they were resting at -50 F (-45.5 C) with wind chill at -63 F (-52.7 C). I couldn't imagine how cold you all must have been. Where I lived we only got down to about -25 F (-31 C) overnight. Glad you all survived. Looked like a great time. Can't wait to see it for myself one day, but I'll probably fly up in the summer.
Also another not-so-stupid question: What to do if the vehicle break down. Is there ways to send signal for help? Or people just have to wait for others passing by?
I know it`s a stupid question but I`m really curious: How do you guys do number 2 when camping in the arctic? It is really safe to stick your butt out in the -30 air?

+Brendan Mercieca woo-hoo! thanks! I just moved to BC from Perth, and the NL are number one on my to do list for while I'm here! simply stunning. thanks for the recommendation :)
I cant believe people intentionally go out into the snow
The snow is fun. I like winter time. I'm in Alberta. And it gets to -40c (-40F) at times. You get used to it. You acclimate to it. It's becomes normal.
Get yourself a skidoo. Auger. Nice warm clothes and ice fish with a nice big fire on the ice and you will forsure change your mind
this is my hometown lol, so much tourists and I question why
Pardeep Dhaliwal I live in Yellowknife and it is -52c rn but it’s so fun and beautiful

I brought my drone, in fact, there is 4 drone shots in the first 20 seconds of this video
Nice trip. You had the right truck.

What an awesome trip!
I believe i couldn't handle the weather but i definetely would like to try it
Greetings from Brazil
Thanks! Obrigado Wilson!
Great video! What an adventure.
I know it`s a stupid question but I`m really curious:
How do you guys do number 2 when camping in the arctic? It is really safe to stick your butt out in the -30 air?
beautiful sights, great adventure
It's pretty warm down here in the Colombian coast in comparison hahaha. Great video guys and I hope to check those northern towns sometime soon!
Awesome footage, editing and music. I am offered a truck driving job for the ice road season, so I am going up there in 10 days...so exited
This is an insanely crazy adventure! Thanks for sharing it!
Thanks Jaime!
Excellent road adventure
Hey, im form Yellowknife, Northwest territories and its cool it should be on everybody's buket list
Man it looks awesome there. I would have slept in the truck too. Man cooking at -34? Wow. That looks like an adventure.
It was an adventure and then some! Thanks Remi!
Surprised they didn't see more wildlife. When I drove the road between Hay River and Fort Smith in 1971, we saw a huge number and a huge variety. Some call Wood Buffalo the Serengeti of the North.
Another thing, did you notice on the sign when Fort Chipweyan was founded? 1788. How could that be? Its actually the first European settlement in Alberta, way up there. The answer is the fur trade. It was founded by Roderick MacKenzie, cousin and good friend of the man for whom the MacKenzie River is named, and, as it happens, my several greats uncle.

That would have been amazing to go that far, next time!
Good job guys. Be safe up there
