Hello and welcome! I'm Betty Franks and I create my vision of abstract fields of flowers using acrylic paints and pencils (and other mark-making tools). I live in the San Francisco Bay Area and travel a couple of times a year to Preko, Croatia (where my parents live). I started painting in 2012 and focused on abstract art in the summer of 2015. I loosely tape the front with painters tape once I position and then install screws and then remove tape on the other side.

After using many floater frames, I have realized some canvases are not perfectly square, making it impossible to get it perfect in the frame... my floaters were black, so it was less noticeable. I consoled myself that the average customer would never notice the slight differences the way I did! TYour art looks spectacular in them.... they are really the perfect finish for your work.
Yes! I found that to be true about them not being square. And, I have to agree with you that the average customer won't notice. But, I do! It makes me crazy when it's not perfect. However, they both looked great once I was done. Thanks for sharing, Leslie!
@@BettyFranksArt By the way, I'm noticing your use of flourescent magenta in some of your work, which looks incredible. I've been afraid to use any flourescents because they are rated as "fugitive" colors. Do you have some special varnish that will help maintain the color over time? I know Bob Burridge also uses a lot of flourescent colors and doesn't seem to worry about it at all...
@@LMillerConnect Good question, Leslie! I use a little bit along with other colors mixed in, so I don't worry about it. I'm kinda like Bob in that regard! 😍
I had the same issue. Ended up keeping the frame for my use only. 🙁Trying to get the canvas in was about 1/16th”- 1/8th” too large on one side and while trying to put the canvas in, the corners kind of came apart a bit. I was pretty annoyed with this entire process. (I had given the the exact measurements of the canvas as instructed….not realizing there was a 1/16th or 1/8th inch side that was larger. I asked the Company when I sent in the measurements did they allow any leeway. They said they added an 1/8” of an inch to the given measurements. That still didn’t help this canvas. So important to know whether canvas is truly square!!

Betty, They both came out amazing. I understand about being a perfectionists on this project. These painting are master pieces so perfection is an absolute must for your paintings.I ve seen a glue gun used to help secure these in place, just a very small amount. I may have to apply for that assistant position 😁 ! Thank you !

I like to buy floater frames that I put together myself (and that saves money on large pieces), so that I can choose my measurements according to the size of the canvas. That gives me even space on each side. Then I use old business cards as spacers. I like 1/4 inch gap. By using the cards, I can go around the entire frame adding one card at a time to make it snug, and know that it is evenly spaced. For smaller pieces, I use floater frames that have a lip that ensures you are centered.

Where do you get the floating frames they are not assembled?
@@maggiedemarco8458 I use Frame Destination and American Frame. I only have them send unassembled on large frames that are costly to ship. Hope that helps!

I just love your videos! Thank you for all that you share! Sometimes I use a small dollop of blue to secure it in the corners before I flip it - but then I saw another artist use decking spacers to keep the right amount of space between the canvas and the frame! They're in my cart to order along with my next group of frames!! Cant wait to see more of your work - thanks again!

If you put cardboard shims in each side so they are even. I put shims all the way around and flip it over on a couple of books so I don’t dislodge the shims. This really helps to have and even border all the way around.

I find that artist tape is handy when I need to hold a canvas in place for things like this.

Floating frames can be set in evenly with a set of playing cards wedged in evenly around all four sides, making sure to use an even number of cards, say 6 cards round each side, if its still loose add another or more cards in each side until its wedged evenly. When its well wedged it makes it easier to handle and you can flip it with the cards still stuck in and lever them out when you have finished. You only need to wiggle them until they come loose or take one card out from the middle of the wedge to loosen them. Equally, its easier to slide the final card into the middle of the 'wedge' as it should be a tight fit. An even number of playing cards is a great hack for so many things I often use stacks of cards to stand things on to level them. When finished, you can play a game of poker. Nice.

To keep the canvas central when trying to line it up square in the frame, we use little narrow strips of foamcore, and have some even slimmer cardboard shims as well. The foamcore is bouncy and compresses so you can get them in quite snug before you flip it over to screw in. Just make sure you have different thicknesses and use the same all around. Works a treat.

It came out looking fabulous ! Where can I get the corners for the frame to transport ? I keep knocking my frames & needing to touch up the corners which looks awful . Thank you !😊

They are very handy for transporting artwork to shows or for shipping.
It looks like your canvas is too thin for that frame. Do you have any videos of self made floating frames? I make my own but not floating.
The canvas was the right size for the frame. I purchased the correct depth. Just took a bit to figure it all out! 😁 Unfortunately, I don't have any other videos. I don't make my own. Thanks so much for watching!
Quick question in in re placement of d-rings.....I was taught to go to 1/3 of the length so for 20-21, would be about 7", yet you only went down about 4"........??????
Right! I don't like adding them down that far because I feel like the top part of the canvas sticks out too far from the wall. I prefer that it's more snug to the wall, so I only go down about a quarter of the way. I just estimate it. Thanks for watching, Laura!

Betty, thanks for the video. I was super excited to see this as I was trying to buy floating frames earlier in the week for my 1 1/2 inch sides and could not figure out which ones to order so ordered one to see. Are the canvases that are over 1 inch deep not supposed to be framed? As always, thanks Betty.
It's a good question! Some folks (both artists and collectors) like to have all their canvases framed and others don't. My art is casual and doesn't need a frame around it, however, these 1/2" deep canvases need them. They look really great framed, but they are extra work...and then there's always that fear that the wood will get dinged. It's not something I do often and when I do, I'm reminded why I don't like to use them. But again...the art sure does look nice!

Haha....YES!! I said I was going to leave some slack and then I totally forgot. It was a bit of a challenge to get it on the nail when I hung them for the show. I'm just so used to making it tight, that I forgot I didn't want to do that. I sold the blue one, but I'll be loosening up the other one.

Hi Karen, for my paper pieces, I sell some with matting and some without. If I'm doing a show, I'll mat and frame them behind glass. However, I've also been known to attach them to wood panels. Thanks for watching!

I am watching and laughing at myself. I put my huge wooden art easel together today. It took quite a bit of time. The directions are pictures. I paid attention to the pictures I thought. But once done I saw the red outlines on everything I put backwards. And I have to take the entire thing apart. It came in pieces and had the screws labeled which was nice. At least I now know exactly what to do lololol…. You are a lot of fun to watch whether painting or framing. Thanks…🌺💐🌷🌹

Maybe furniture sticky putty to center and mark the back all the way around before removing the putty then doing the screws

Wow! I thought you were going to teach us to make our own frame. You showed us how hard it is to use a premade frame. Sigh. Artist have to learn all kinds of skills other than just painting a masterpiece. Thanks for the video.
We are a jack of all trades, right?! Once I figured it out, it was so much easier to do the second one. I rarely buy these, so it seems like it's a learning process each time. And, each floating frame is a little different in terms of how to install it. It's all part of the process of being an artist!

Couldn’t you use blue painters tape on each corner to hold in place then put an object underneath for sturdiness while screwing in place?

Great video. I am wondering how you would screw in the eyelets that came with them? I usually use a screw driver to rotate it, but it looks like there is not enough room.

What were those little blocks of wood for that you didn't need to use? Also what do you use to edit your videos and speed up?
Hi Chrystene! I didn't figure out what the blocks of would were used for, but someone commented that they're probably used if you're using canvas board. I use Photoshop Elements for Video Editing. Been using it for years and in the past year or so I feel like I've finally gotten used to it!
You make the wiring look so easy. Mine doesn't look nearly as neat. 🙂

I ended up doing another one the other day and I added spacers (cardboard) and it worked so much better!
@@BettyFranksArt, same here and sometimes have found using my business cards along with the card board gave me just the right snugnes between the canvas and the frame.
Just watching you, an artist who has sold hundreds of pieces, have the same struggles with these frames that I always have made me feel so much better!
But what were those rectangular blocks for??
Are those blocks used if you have a flat canvas panel? You would put the panel in, then the rectangle blocks would go in between the flat panel and the frame. That way you would screw into the blocks to hold it in place. I made a floating frame with corner moulding. There are YT videos. It was perfectly square. Unfortunately, the panel was not. I still have to work on that. I may start over. I have enough moulding.

Haha...yes, I struggle lots and just like my paintings (or vice versa), I work through it until I figure it out. Not 100% sure about those blocks. I think it was to raise your artwork higher. So confused! 🤷♀️
