I like to back SSG with a similar sounding FM instrument if I've got the channel space for it. I also like to play the same note on SSG with different vibrato settings; that's what makes that sound that would otherwise be very difficult to get out of an SSG channel. You can see this at 5:53 in SSG1 and SSG2. Effect 04xx is vibrato. 3 is the period and 5 and 2 are the amplitude.
I would've thought that stuff like these, PC-98 arranges, would be something very popular (at least for Touhou). This stuff is so good but oh well I obviously don't know anything about you but good luck on master's degree!
