I would mention one important thing: in the case of an acoustic piano, the static touch weight has to be measured by depressing the right pedal, and that is a big difference compared to a digital instrument, because there is - I think - no difference in touch weight with and without pressing the sustain pedal.

Hi, ive already commented on your upweight video, so here we go again. A well regulated action should have a downweight of about 50g, pretty much trough out the whole keyboard. Some companies regulate the treble a bit lighter (maybe 2g) and the bass a bit heavier (again, maybe about 2g), others try to keep it completely consistent, but the downweight shouldn't have a range of 10g. That would be considered inconsistent. Regulation is one of the hardest and most time consuming procedures in the making of a piano, and a perfect regulated action, is a determinating factor for high quality pianos. If you are okay with the action, there's obviously no need to change anything, but if you are not satisfied anymore, call a piano technician who can rework the weighting of the keys with changing the leadweights in the keys or/and lubricating some actionparts.
    Best Regards :)

I concur with this comment. I personally prefer my pianos to be more around the 45g downweight range, but 50 is standard. This video confirms my biggest gripe with the AvantGrand: heavy and unresponsive action. It really is inexcusable considering the fact that the action is the main selling point of this instrument.
Also be aware that a heavier action is really going to put you at risk of repetition injury if you intend to do any amount of serious practicing.

@@t04v7 So people have to retire early if they own an older Steinway? These first world problems disected into minutia get tiresome.
Ok, I'll bite, I have 10 grand budget, we want a hybrid. What do you recommend? or do we have to give up on piano until we can afford something that is ergonomically "safe?"
I do not feel anything Yamaha does in the context of key weight could be considered inexcusable. Now if their pianos were toppling over on people and necessitating rescues by the fire department that would be unsafe AND inexcusable.

The 50 grams number is without considering friction and dampers. Friction improves over time with playing the action. Dampers don't exist in the digital piano N1X, so the action is actually too light, because it's missing parts affecting the touch weight. Expecting a perfectly even action from something which costs below $10K and not above $200K is also a bit over the top.
However beside that the reality is more about how these built-to-order digital hybrid instruments end up in customer's hands. A real piano sits in a showroom for a while before getting shipped to the first owner: The wood settles and adjusts to the local climate zone, the action gets broken in by visiting customers, the piano gets tuned several times and regulated at least once after leaving the factory.
A N1X comes right out of the factory box without anything of that happening. Fit & finish is up to you.

    Thanks for posting this David.
This gets back to my post on PW where I do have concerns on how the regulation, if any, is being done at the Yamaha factory. Yamaha actions are great but being regulated after delivery by a certified Yamaha AG technician can make the pianos even better.

The mid-range should be all around 50g with 1 to 2g variations, a next nearby key at 60g is a bit heavy.

    This is very poor quality.
