    YAY!!! This is exactly what I was looking for! I thought, "Surely someone has thought of this idea and has a great technique for accomplishing it ACCURATELY without stretching or distorting that teeny tiny border. That person was YOU!!! THANK YOU!!!

    An AMAZING tip. So much easier than flanges and gives the same effect. Thank you SO much for sharing🎉😊 It took me a couple of watches, and you need to press the seam allowance the right way...but stick with it...it becomes clear in the end....if you are still unsure run up 4 inches of dummy border as a test. Brilliant. Or as you Americans say awesome!😊Thank you once again.

    Gosh Nancy, skinny inset strips have become one of my go to border treatments. Just reacquainted myself with the process to use it in my guild's round robin. I have finished it both with cornerstones and with a mitered corner treatment. Thank you again and always for sharing this technique. I'm such a fan!

    Hey Nancy! I love this technique! Have you ever made a stained glass quilt? I bet you could adapt this technique to add a perfect 1/4 inch black trim in the stained glass blocks!

      Hi Lisa, yes I do do stained glass quilts :) - and this would make a really fun border, on any quilt.Our current series is the Quilted Tiles blocks - making the 1/4" bias stems and creating your designs - kind of stain glassy :)Thanks for the question, comments and for watching!! - Nancy

    Awesome solution for a tricky design element on a border. Took me a couple watches but it kind of reminds me of a flat felled seam approach. Love it and will share :)
    Side note, I have a similar rail fence quilt you have at the end [i.e. similar colors]. I just did a few blocks to test how I liked it; still have to make the entire quilt. Thank you for sharing this tip!!!!

    Assuming you have made two side borders, Can you show how to join these borders to the top and bottom borders?

      Sandra, are you meaning to join these to the quilt? I have many videos on Appling the border, maybe this will help :)

    So how much do you add to the black border next to the blue to get it to come out to the size you want

    • @CarolBell78
      @CarolBell78 6 років тому +1

      I was wondering this too, since the black strip is sewn with a much larger seam allowance. That will mess with your calculations if you aren't careful.

    • @QuiltingWithNancy
      @QuiltingWithNancy  6 років тому

      Hi Kay - that is up to you, but you are correct, the finial border will come about a 1/2" smaller than it would "normally" be if sewn with a 1/4" seam.

    Sorry but I wish you could of done step by step with exact measurement..Did not get it. But beautiful end result

    • @QuiltingWithNancy
      @QuiltingWithNancy  6 років тому

      Hi Nicky :) - no problem, the blue was cut 3 1/2" wide, the black cut 2 1/2", the peach was cut 1" wide, so it finished 1/4" using this technique and the final black was cut 2 1/2" wide. Hope this helps. you can see more about my border techniques in some of our earlier videos - hope you check them out :)

    Wonderful technique! I have a question about the width of the peach strip and the width of the narrower black strip. It looks like there needs to be extra width on the narrower black strip, but how much? I look forward to the updated video!

    • @QuiltingWithNancy
      @QuiltingWithNancy  6 років тому

      Hi Betsy - you are correct - using this technique the black strip has the same seam allowance as the peach, which is about 3/4" for this technique so if you are planning your borders and want that black border to be a specific size be sure to add an extra 1/2-3/4" for the extra seam. Hope this helps?

    I have also watched several times and just when I think I "get it" I don't. In the beginning you say that your strip set is already sewn together, my question is: is it only partially sewn? The pins seem to indicate that there is a section that isn't. Is the peach sewn to the smaller black/dotted strip on one side? Thanks for your help, this is an awesome technique.

    • @QuiltingWithNancy
      @QuiltingWithNancy  5 років тому +2

      Hi - you asking makes me think we need to do another video :), and I will, but to answer what i think is your questions, the small peach strip is already sewn onto the first border with the 1/4" seam allowance. Then it is pinned onto the next border and sewn right next to the peach seam instead of lining it up on the on the right side of your foot as you normally would. We are recording this weekend and we will record a new video on this technique :)
      Thanks for watching!!

      I have been poking for the follow up video and can’t seem to find it. I think I would do so much better by watching you put the peach material on from the beginning than reading

    Am I the only one who didn't "get it" in how Nancy explained how to do this? I only saw one seam sewn. Did she fold the peach fabric wrong sides together first and sew the one seam between two black strips of fabric? I did watch it twice and see that she cut a one-inch strip of peach fabric vs. 3/4 inch. I'd love to understand the "magic" of this peach strip in the border, but feel like I'm missing a few details. I need a Do-Over :-( Can anyone out there in YT Land help me out?

      The first seam that attachs the 1" peach and the black is 1/4" like normal. That part was already done. Then the seam to attach the second black - what you see her sew - is not 1/4" seam, and she's not even looking at that edge. She is only paying attention the pressed over edge of the first seam allowance, and laying those stitches down next to it, which makes this seam about a 1/2". Because this is not near the edge of the skinny strip, it is more stable, and will give you a straighter line.

      @newbeequilter 6 років тому +3

      + Pretty Curious - I guess I need her to use a stiletto to point things out how far from which seam or raw edge vs. using her finger. What seems obvious to an accomplished quilter isn't always clear enough for many of us beginners. Thanks for trying.
