    Hi Tom. Thanks for info on on Nikon 55-300 lens, got one and it's brilliant. Need to do more shooting to get to full grips with it.
    One item I am a little stumped on is, do I need a eye-if card to transfer picture wirelessly, or has my D3300 have wi if.
    I noticed in the menu that it has select to send to smart device, but every time I select it. It tells me this option is not available in the current settings.
    Do I need a eye-if Card?
    Many thanks again
    Pete.

    • @TomPhotoix
      @TomPhotoix  7 років тому +1

      +Peter Williams hi Peter, no problem, glad you like it. The d3300 doesn't have wifi built in, but it does have snapbridge capability that works with the optional WU-1a wifi adapter. I actually did a video on setting snapbridge up on the d3400 earlier in the week and whilst the process will be slightly different for the d3300 it might help. You will need to price up the cost of the adapter vs the cost of an eye-fi card and see which is better value

    • @unverifiedbiotic
      @unverifiedbiotic 7 років тому

      nikhil better buy a sony rx100v, has up to 960 fps. If you're gonna be far away, consider a bridge camera like sony's rx10 mark iii or panasonic's fz1000 and fz2500 - all have 1" sensors, this sony also records 960fps, the panasonics only up to 120, but I think that would be enough for sports.

      Probably a camcorder tbh, or a mirrorless camera. The Nikon isn't great as it hunts quite a lot and struggles to track anything very reliably

    Another quick question... I typically have a 35mm f/1.8 prime lens on my Nikon. Would the stock lens or any zoom lens be better than a faster prime lens for shooting video in Manual mode? FWIW, I typically am filming a toddler who, of course, does not stay still.

    • @TomPhotoix
      @TomPhotoix  6 років тому

      Not really. To be honest you’ll struggle filming a toddler with a dslr, they just don’t focus fast enough.

    You suggest setting the shutter speed to (1/200 or 1/125) when taking video in manual mode. Can you explain how shutter speed factors in to taking video? My assumption would be that the shutter is always open when taking video.

    • @TomPhotoix
      @TomPhotoix  6 років тому +2

      Shutter speed works in video just as much as it does in photography. Whilst yes, the shutter is technically open in a dslr, it still records a set number of frames every second (FPS). The shutter speed is the duration each of those frames is exposed for. Generally the rule is your shutter speed should be double your frame rate, or as close to it as possible. So at 30fps you should be around 1/60, at 60fps should be 1/120. Not all cameras can do each shutter speed so you need to pick the closest one. You can for effect choose any shutter speed you want, faster shutters will produce more detail, slower will produce blur which is usually welcomed in feature films as it looks more natural.

One question I'm sure someone can answer, I notice whenever I start a video the Field of View on the screen shrinks quite a bit, is there a way to stop that? or is that a normal feature (im pretty new to DSLRs) I tried looking through the 160 page manual but nothing! Thanks!

    For someone who is going to be filming themselves a lot would u recommend the d3300 instead? Since it has the wifi live mode? I purchased the d3400 earlier today because of the Black Friday sale, but now I am feeling that I should've purchased the d3300 instead.

      +1mileysuperfan1 you could look at the d5200 or instead. Doesn't have wifi but has flippy screen and mic in. That's what I use for the self filming. Should be about the same price used as a new d3400.

      +Faisal Khan Baloch you can't in camera, you have to do it in software afterwards. Dslr cameras aren't really set up for slow mo. With a maximum of 60p video it's not ideal but you can get reasonable results by slowing down footage in post.

    Why can I only record for 10 minutes (you can see it counting down from 10 on the screen when you first hit the record button) before it stops recording automatically? It drives me insane when I'm trying to film myself doing something or talking for a longer amount of time because I have to keep walking back over behind the camera and hitting record over and over. I've heard there are hacks to remove this limit, but I don't want to mess up my nice camera... any tips or opinions??

      RatMingle You can't shoot RAW video on the 700D, unless you have magic lantern installed. It will be .mov format. You can't change the video format unless you hack the camera. Video and photo are entirely separate. It doesn't matter what format you have for photos, it doesn't affect the video. The only things might be carried over are picture styles and settings like contrast and sharpness.

      ***** haha oh okay i thought it was in raw because the file sizes were stupidly big. also when i tried to take them to windows movie maker it said "this file type is not supported"

      +RatMingle if shooting 1080p then the files will be Pretty large. I can easily hit over a gb in a few minutes of footage. WMM doesn't like .mov format do some reason, you'll need to convert them to mpeg or something else first. I seem to recall there being a plugin that does it automatically, but it's been many years since I used windows so I'm not sure.

      Tom Photoix Sorry...lol. I’ve been looking in line and researching the cameras on UA-cam. I can buy this for $200. Do you think it would be a good first camera? Keep in mind I’m using it for music video shoots

    You cannot shoot quality videos with the D3400. THERE IS NO EXTERNAL MIC INPUT. Nikon's choice to remove the external mic input from the D3400 was a BIG BIG MISTAKE !!!!
