- In this video , I had given full detail of procedure as per AASHTO Designation: T 193-99 -2003 for determining CBR.
California Bearing Ratio (CBR) test was developed by the California Division of Highway as a method of classifying and evaluating soil-sub grade and base course materials for flexible pavements. The soil sample used in the CBR test should pass from 20 mm size and retained on 4.75 mm size. Is it correct? Or, the soil pass from 20 mm sieve can be completely used without control the 4.75 mm sieve. Could you explain this clearly please? Thank you.
If all material passes a 19.0-mm sieve, the entire gradation shall be used for preparing specimens for compaction without modification. If there is material retained on the 19 mm sieve, the material retained on the19 mm sieve shall be removed and replaced by an equal amount of material passing the 19.0-mm sieve and retained on the 4.75-mm sieve obtained by separation from portions of the sample not otherwise used for testing. From a sample having a mass of 35 kg or more, select a representative portion having a mass of approximately 11 kg for a moisture density test and divide the remainder of the sample to obtain three representative portions having a mass of approximately 6.8 kg each.

If the dia of mould is 15 cm and height of mould is 17.5 cm then how the volume comes as 2250 cc ?
Modified compaction mould) As per IS 2720 (Part VIII) 1980, IS 10074
Cylindrical mould of Mild steel having volume of 2250 cc with an internal diameter of 150 ± 0.1mm and an internal effective height of 127.3 mm ± 0.1mm.
Fitted with a detachable base plate and removable extension collar with 60mm height.
175-47.7=127.3 mm
47.7 is the spacer height

Dia of mould 150mm & Height of mould 175 then volume of mould 2250 ? How it is
175 height is including with collar which is 50 mm so while calculating volume , you have to take height 175 - 50 = 125 mm
Generally mould height is considered 127.4. You can measure it in laboratory.

Same CBR value but you have to change calibration factor.
The capacity of proving ring only metters when CBR % is high
Soil normally cen be tested with 10kn however when you are testing
Wmm material which required 100% CBR value then you have to use 50kn ring

In highway 19 mm sieve is very important , in all gradation you will find 19 mm sieve , 20 mm sieve is never used in highway, it is used in concreting work only, 19 mm sieve is used in soil , CTB , BM , DBM , BC , SURFACE DRESSING , STONE MASTIC ASPHALT, BITUMEN COLD MIX ,DLC & PQC.I think you got your answer.
