I swear the only reason Microsoft keeps adding that "GetUsername" function into the Windows API is so that smug indie developers can use it to break the 4th wall...
I think this is the first time UA-cam's new random recommendation crap has actually recommended me a channel I genuinely love... I don't think I'd ever have found your channel otherwise, and you also review a lot of games I never would've seen otherwise...
I think this is the case. When the game starts, the game secretly makes a save state. After the game is shut down, it then checks if theres a save state. If it's true, then the game is bricked. If it's false, then you get to play.
I get really sad with the whole 'SPOOKY READING YOUR NAME FROM THE COMPUTER' thing as my computer only has 'Owner' as it's name. You only have one chance, Owner. Not as cool lol.
My computer's connected to my microsoft account. Consequentially, i proceeded to laugh my ass off when it said "you only have one chance, 'No bad'." it absolutely ruined the moment but by god it was hilarious.
short answer: you don't. the "Niko is dead" ending exists only within the original game, but iirc having both of the versions on your computer gives you an achievement on the Steam version
I'd like to think this video accidentally lead me to love this game, when I first watched it three years ago. I watched this video and thought, "Wow, that's a cool concept." Then I forgot completely about it. Little did I know I would be waist-deep in the fandom three years later. Somehow, this video and its sequel got recommended to me a few months back. And so, I bought it. I don't cry a lot, maybe once or twice a _year._ Like, emotional crying. This game. It made me tear up a bit -- multiple times. And that's saying a *lot* coming from me.
VERY BIG SPOILER WARNING i didn't end up crying, but i spent at least like 5 minutes just contemplating whether to save the world or not i chose to let niko return home i instantly regretted it
"One chance only" games may be one of the best and worst ideas for video games ever. From an artistic standpoint it is brilliant and for most people it will instill a sense of responsibility (as stated in the video). However I gotta say the cons outweigh the pros: what if there is a black out or your computer crashes? How do you show someone the game if they can't play it? Worst of all it eliminates an important quality all games need: replay value. The final nail is that in the end people are going to find a way around the "one chance" gameplay anyway so there seems even less point in making the game's draw be that.
thankfully, the full commercial release is going to have opportunities for multiple replays, but the creators said that there will be a certain mechanic that keeps the whole "oneshot" theme going.
The retail version does, which lets you play more than once. The original was free. And even so, there's nothing wrong with the ONE TIME play mechanic in a paid product if you know it's there ahead of time. Do you get upset when you buy a sandwich because you can't go back and eat that sandwich again later?
Nobody: Me when I eventually have no responsibilities: **plays OneShot and never closes it until I get an ending because Niko is too adorable to kill**
There is actually an easy way to replay the game by deleting it's registry file using regedit. Open Regedit > Open HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Oneshot > Delete the "ending" file.
Because of the fact if I close the window I kill Niko immediately makes me feel scared of doing it. I don't know why, before even knowing the guy he's already too likable to kill.
Recently discovered your channel and I've really enjoyed the past.....uhm....5? videos I just binged. Keep up the great work, dude! You've talked a lot about games that are totally different experiences, and those are titles I'm amazingly drawn too. It was criminal I hadn't seen your show for this long. I'm subbed to make sure I don't miss more!
this game was absolutely beautiful. one of those special games that really brought tears to my eyes and widened my understanding of breaking the 4th wall.
The puzzle involving the Documents folder was actually done in OFF as well, in the readme there was. Q&A section, with some questions, some jokes, and one question that gave the answer to that
The thing about the player being a god makes a whole lot of sense, as in basically every video game the player has direct control over the main character most of the time
Hey, I know I usually don't comment, but...whatever, here it goes. Hey, Nitro! I just wanted to say, thank you for your awesome videos! I love them all, every single one of them. I've watched all of your reviews (some of them, more than once) and they are extremely fun. You are a funny guy, while you do know how to be critical about what needs to be critized. Remember playing this years ago after finally finishing .flow because I assumed (thanks to the art style) that it would be a heart warming game. Maybe even a comedy. Five minutes into it and the game is a lot more depressing than I would of expected, got similarly freaked out when the game called me by my name and I foolishly closed the window just to see what would happen. Don’t know if it was just because I was playing it in the middle of the night, by myself with noise cancelling headphones on so the immersion was high but the scene that plays when you replay the game remains one of the most unnerving experiences I’ve ever had. On the other hand after I properly replayed it later on, it’s still nice to occasionally open the game and see light streaming in through the window.
I think I had an idea to make a game like this once (one time and never runs again) but this looks clearly way better than anything I would have made. So cool that someone did it!

The part where the game shows you a pop up and refers you to your name kind of backfired when I played it, because the laptop I was playing the game on used to be my dad's, and due to me being too lazy to change the name, referred to me as 'christian', so I immediately knew that the game was just using my computer name. the fact that the game was even capable of creating a pop-up without crashing still fucked me up though.
Just a heads-up to anyone else who sees this: Depending on your settings, your firewall and/or antivirus might prevent you from visiting the page linked in the description. "NIKO! You want to go bowling, cousin?"
I always went playing with Roman but damn was he too clingy to Niko.

Yeah, because Roman is definitely from GTA 5

I WANT TO KNOW TOO HHHHHHH
Must be similar to how you can put a password to a rom
I think this is the case.

why not put a comma before the "lol"?
Nitro Rad: _talks about you not being able to close the game unless you want to lose_

Still make you feel horrible about doing it tho
I love how you integrated the music into the video when you were talking about the references to the other games, good touch.

***** because its stupid when comes things like games
+CrazyRiverOtter My thoughts exactly. I adore games I can beat in like an hour and never worry about again, and be happy with what little I had.

Great. I can imagine someone getting sick of the oneshot mechanic really fast.

The sequence of 5:32 to 5:35 was expected to be something weird or funny, but james is truly a god
-a shiny one for that matter.
I got 4 computers... 4 shots :3
While this is a really interesting concept for a game, I just hope more games don't follow suit.
I hope so too. As interesting of a concept as it is, I truly dislike this kind of level of scarcity and limited whatevers when it comes to games.
other pc files messing games I knew are Space Blaster (really underrated) and ImScared
go check them out :D
merry gear solid also break the fourth wall in a similar way
It's fine if it's free. But no way if your expecting someone to fork over their cash.
Completely disagree, this is one of my favourite games of all time

The god bit at 5:30 made me laugh so hard xD , keep up the good work dude!
New updated OneShot game to be released this summer!
If you want to play this game again, you have to reinstall it. It just worked for me.
It got a new ending where you can get both, called the Solstice Ending. It does involve finding a way back, though.

The thing about the player being a god makes a whole lot of sense, as in basically every video game the player has direct control over the main character most of the time
If the power goes out or the game crashes, the game recognizes this and lets you continue.
This game actually scared me from any and all fights. Good job game.
It looks like this game is a really good showcase of what coding and computers as a whole can do.

Now if you quit the game Nico just says that it went dark and is happy to see you come back!
The true ending is really cathartic.
I played it, and now I'm left wondering...
Did I make the right choice? Would I make that choice again?
This game is really a masterpiece.
I’ve seen this game every where, but had no idea what it was
oneshot now shows a main character with no determination
When that pop up came up and it said "You have One Shot Jaden" i fucking took a solid 3 or 4 minutes to recoup.

Ayyy dat Kyle Hyde picture tho.

whelp go buy it now its on steam and the expansion to the story is amazing
the game is actually meant to replayed- you can save both.
niko's walking speed is slower than molasses
there was a molasses flood with the molasses flowing at 30 miles per hour lol
