I’m not experienced with virtual productions films movies but they intrigue me. I think what makes it most exciting is the connection between film and emotion and emotion and spaces. Being an architect I'm always looking to have the spaces I create evoke emotion. Many times those emotions are not discovered by simple pictures but rather through life. Living out our time within these spaces. We grow, experience relationships. Have arguments and experience joy. These life changing moments can be experienced through film. We can be affected by other peoples stories. Through other peoples lives. We connect with them and identify.
This has lead me to my interest in film. Creating spaces for interesting moments to happen.
In steps the iPad and its new lidar scanner. How can we use this to capture spaces, sets, scenes. It dawned on me that this tech would be ideal for virtual production and film previsualization.
When it comes to film, who wants to waste their talents time clients time and rest of the crew by not being prepared. This allows you to explore all the shots and plan the entire film on location within the real world measurements. What constraints will you have? Where should lighting be. What’s the best camera angle? Lens? Wide narrow etc. when does a lens change make sense.
Planning early makes the difference. In this video I test out my theory. Scan a space in under a minute. Bring it into unreal engine and render out animations in real-time.
In this video I’m exploring the workflow for a previz virtual production. You could take this technology for what it is at this moment. Accept the flaws and run with it. If you’re looking for final production value we are not there yet. But we will be soon. With tools like #sketchfab, #trnio and #polycam it will not be long until the iPad or even iPhone is the go to tool for virtual productions. Can you tell I’m excited about this? Are you? Let me know in the comments.
The technology we have available to us is amazing. It’s time to create.

Nice! Any recommendations for getting rid of scanning defects?

I don’t have a good way yet other than remodeling the entire thing

@@WhitewashStudio Do you think the kitchen scan you made in the video (when digitally blurred to resemble background behind a Live Action Character on greenscreen) will be passable as "real" - If not.. then for a scan area the size of your kitchen, w/ the plethora of surfaces, how long do you think remodeling might take? I want to Use Polycam as pipeline for a production.. but no clue about how long it takes or how much is required to clean up the scans. Thank you.

Thank you for the videos and instruction you give on youtube BTW :)

I feel like the lidar scan is not passable as real yet, but photogrammetry can get you there. It does take a good amount of cleanup. Of course small objects and reflective objects are difficult to scan.

@@WhitewashStudio I did a Lidar scan w/ Iphone 12Pro, then did custom processing w/ 0% simplification, and set all the settings to highest quality and the result feels totally workable. I guess I need to see it in Unreal/Unity to see how it works.. but feels like it will be passible as real
