  • This year, Toyota treated me for my birthday with the Toyota GR Yaris. After the first drive the month prior, living with the Yaris really opened my eyes...and I LOVED it!!!
A big thank you to ‪@toyotauk‬ for the birthday loan!

An interesting review Bex with the GR Yaris on the road. Over 6 decades ago the Mini was born and it was incredible, small light, not exactly powerful but my word it handled. The later Cooper S cars were nuts. Maybe this Yaris owes it's existence to that car. It makes great use of the power available but handles well... and a single tone horn that sounds like a constipated stoat.

I have one of these in the red colour, and with the circuit pack fitted. A few thoughts I have on it are as follows. I drive it a couple of times a week, on a 32-mile cross country route to work, I've had 46mpg out of it when plodding along, and I've had 25mpg when I'm not! I run it on shell super unleaded. The central rear view mirror, I just don't get, Toyota had Tommi Makkinen come in to help design the car, and I'd of thought one of the basics would be good driver visibility. But if you want to look to the left in some tight turns, even with the mirror pushed up, I still have to duck down and look under it. You can't drop the drivers seat. Grip is fantastic, and you don't have to drive like an idiot to enjoy it! It stone chips easily on the front of the bonnet, and I don't sit close behind other cars when following. It has lane assist that I turn off every time I get in it, pointless driver aid for this car, I think. Because mine has the circuit pack, there's no built-in sat-nav, but you can plug your phone in for maps. To be honest, though, ive used the centre console once since I got the car to have a quick look at the layout, I don't even listen to music when I'm in it. It's a firm, planted ride but quite comfortable, if a little bit noisy. Driving modes, I use normal mostly, sometimes rally mode, i don't bother with the sport setting for rear drive. I'm more interested in outright grip and im fortunate enough to have another car that is rear wheel drive if i want any tail happy fun. It's a pocket rocket that I enjoy being behind the wheel of every time I take it out, whichever way i drive it. 🙂

I’m a owner also , it took me some research but if ever driving hard no one is behind very often so what I do is to angle said mirror and point the close end directly at drive so as to limit mirrors cross section . This method stopped me swapping in a digital rear mirror. I hope this works for you. PS, I’m 6’ and in town the mirror is near perfect but in the,oh trains where these things are great it needs to be moved.

The None Circuit edition, which is the way to go if you aren't ever going to track it.

Looks like a GR Yaris in Convenience pack spec which is the better choice for everyday road use, its just a shame you cannot get both Convenience pack & Circuit pack fitted together for people that want the ultimate road going GR Yaris. I agree the Toyota horn is an embarrassment, its the same on my C-HR, I do have a twin tone upgrade planned for mine.

A shame the review wasn't longer.....
The standard set up is better suited for dailying, suspension wise, and in this convenience pack guise, the extras make it far more liveable day to day.
It's what I chose, after test driving the circuit pack 3 times. No standard cars were available then. I relied on hundreds of hours of reviews worldwide, but it wasn't until mine arrived, that I knew I'd definitely made the correct choice for my needs.
I had assymetric 5's fitted before collection, two years ago now- the stock dunlops aren't the best!
Running asymmetric 6's now and no regrets 😊

The convenience pack cars were only £1k cheaper to buy than the circuit pack, but you have to do without the trick diffs and nearly £4k worth of lightweight wheels! You really have to go with the circuit pack in a car like this, its not built for comfort. Who needs a head up display really?! I've had my circuit pack 1 year now and 13k hard miles.
Nearly all owners agree with me as only a tiny amount of base and convenience models were sold in the UK.

Oh I've also upgraded my horn and fitted a mirror riser for better visibility. You can also buy armrests for the centre!

@@v9photoworks700I'm pleased you chose the spec best for YOU!
      Enjoy........👍
I chose the spec best for my needs as a one car does all, road only, and daily blast!
I bought for ultimate grip, not to instigate slip and oversteer.
The tyres are the only true weakness in the standard set up. Sorted b4 collection.
Cost wasn't a point. I bought mine outright and will likely px, like most previous cars, unless there's a specific pulling factor when I change.
I wanted proper awd, light, manual, darty, quite quick and different. I also wanted the extra comforts, which the Convenience pack gives. The standard set up's suspension is better for dailying, the Convenience pack lifts the dull cabin's ambience, just sufficiently enough to not feel the need to go for the usual suspects in other, German, manufacturers.
The torsens on the circuit pack don't intervene often with road usage when keeping esc on- how I and many users actually will.
Out of 5 circuit pack drives, 2 more when mine was in for work, I only felt the torsen/s on the 5th drive, which was a 4-5 hour blat, mildly damp in areas and, from memory, around 8 Celsius.
On the roads and esc on.
The sensation was unexpected, 3 out of 5 runs, off a small roundabout and on full boost, around 30-40mph and seriously exaggerating the turn in.
The steering wheel yanked excessively, needing correction, but wasn't particularly rewarding, imo.
My previous i30N performance pack's front axle e-diff felt far more effective, and that was in every turn/corner with esc on or in sport + partially disabled. Unfortunately, it was crap in the wet, even after changing the pz4's to ps4s's, and bunny hopped😮
Expert mode would be the verbal equivalent for the GR4. No idea how similar the the actual esc electronic's lessening is in comparison.
Evo magazine video clearly shows a black circuit pack on track with esc disabled, to expert or more-(off-ish), and you can hear the torsens' delay before activation.
On the road and keeping esc on, esc intervenes first in most cases and is therefore irrelevant for many owners that keep it on!
Many early uk GR4 circuit reviews were on the road and esc ON!
I totally agree, if you're going to drive it with everything off and, especially, if tracking or doing amateur gravel drives etc, yes get the circuit pack.
Many who are buying it for track days, end up doing countless mod's, effectively turning it into a different car, lol...
Sooooooo many other cars available for that.
I test drove a circuit pack 3 times pre ordering mine and kept the safety aids ON.
Yes, you can feel a very slight intervention at times, but for road usage only, it's not frustrating and one benefits from the numerous pre traffic collision audible warnings and extra sensory warnings/braking if distracted.
The standard wheels were £460 each inc vat back in December 2020, when I enquired, vs £1600 each for the circuit's!!
I read 1800 for the circuit's about a year later.
For road usage/uk pot holed City, I'll favour mine. I actually prefer their look too, along with the grey brake callipers vs the 🥱 red. Subjective.
I've backed to back a few times and was delighted to get back into mine and appreciate the real world driving benefits in extras and comfort.
BSM is the best. The stereo is adequate to good vs average and tinny, parking sensors make any journey and awkward manoeuvre-hassle free.
Rear cross traffic alert and emergency braking is simply another nicety/peace of mind. Thankfully, the parking sensors and bsm deal with any side and rear visibility issues that the standard or circuit pack has a plenty.
Discreet ambient lighting also lifts the cabin when dark, sat nav means no annoying cable, the hud is good but certainly not a game changer.
What's a shame is the GR4's awful speed/rev dials that look soooooo dated😂
Being 5'9" and long legged, the lowest seating position is tolerable, but I don't see any major issues re the rear view mirror position. Only if at the front of close traffic lights. I can see fully always across. Perhaps if 6'+??
It's the front A pillars that are very thick/obstructive, imo. Especially the driver's side.
That's the only annoying blind spot in my car.
As far as what most people bought.
I'm not a sheep, and bought with head and countless research.
I didn't fall for the numerous, initial, you must get the circuit pack........ verbal diarrhoea.
A friend did and after going out in mine, he wished he'd simply got the standard car for the far nicer road daily suspension. He's not interested in the Convenience pack's extras but dailies his and dislikes the harsher suspension on speed bumps and poor road surfaces.
Numerous later UA-cam videos explain that the standard car's plenty for the road.
Danni Cuidado does 2 interesting standard vs Circuit pack reviews that cover real world driving dynamics and feel, as well as boyish lap times.
