THIS is what Happens when you Overpower a Transmission... What Broke? 🤷‍♂️

  • Finally had a chance to crack open the Mitsubishi Mirage 5MT manual transmission that I blew at Georgia Off-road Adventures! I've always been curious what actually fails in a manual transmission that is simply overpowered. In this case I was in 2nd gear at the drag strip and this is what happened with a couple hundred HP. Surprisingly It didn't fail sooner. With the old turbo setup I was at 181HP to the wheels and that is the high limit of what I would recommend using this tranny for. This one failed somewhere between 200-250 WHP and would have failed sooner had I been in 3rd gear.
    Also we'll be taking a look at the new 6 speed transmission which is a Toyota C60 from a celica gts 2zz. This is a pretty unique tranny as it has some of (if not the most) closely spaced gear ratios of any transverse production system built. According to my research the C60 and C64 transmissions will hold somewhere between 300-400whp, with 400+hp almost certain to break 3rd 4th or (sometimes) final drive. Fortunately for me the buggy is much lighter than the car, however being an off-road project I'm far more prone to extreme shock loading as the wheels come off the ground.

    Great to finally see what was making all that noise. Excited for the new transmission, I agree those gear ratios are going to work out much better.

      Agreed, I'm prob adding 30lbs to the build but think the improved ratios will net faster lap times

      @@DirtGearTv That and remember E85 only weighs ~6.5 lb./Gal. so just carry 4-5 gallons less and viola, you made back the weight gained!

    Is that an aftermarket diff? Where you buy it from??

    Are there any aftermarket parts for the mirage transmission?

      Just oem replacement parts. Custom made stronger gears for this would cost 5-10k

    Is the C60 transmission a bolt-on swap or are you going to need an adapter plate for the engine a custom flywheel/clutch, what about the axles?

    • @DirtGearTv
      @DirtGearTv  Рік тому

      It's going to need a good bit of fab work. Im doing an adapter plate (next vid) and i'll also do custom axles/cv's but the biggest challenge is going to be relocating the starter 🤔
