Hi! Ableton user for 13 years here. Sorry you don't like the program! But, if there is anyone else confused by the same things, this feels like a good opportunity to have the explanations all in one place. Here is a list of the questions and my answers: 7:00 - You have to click off of the sample to stop it from replaying constantly. You can click off in arrangement view or select a new file or folder in the browser on the left. 7:34 - "Why does it sound worse when I drag it in?" Typically the first thing I do when I load a sample, especially a drum sample, I have to adjust the Fades. You have to disable automation view (Press "A"; if this doesn't do it, press "M" first to turn off your Keyboard Midi input). Then, hover over the sample. You should see some points and a tiny slope. If you can't see them, zoom in to the sample. Drag the top left point next to the waveform all the way to the left to preserve the transients. You see him dragging the sliders at 14:15 if you need to see what I'm talking about. 9:30 - "Don't I only get a certain amount of audio tracks?" In the demo version I'm not sure, but as far as I'm aware you have infinite audio tracks. 10:40 - "How do I add an EQ to this?" If you have the sample open, you will need to switch to the effects view. In the bottom right of the screen with the sample or track selected, you'll see a long window. You have to click on this to open the effects chain. In the browser on the left, you'll see "Audio Effects" and "Plug-ins". For EQ 8, seeing as it's an Ableton stock plugin, it will be in Audio Effects. If you want to use imported VSTs, you'll select "Plugins". Ableton is kind of dumb with this compared to, like, Reaper for example, because you can only have one plugins folder. Instead of clicking and dragging, you can select your audio track and then double click the effect you want in the browser 12:30 - "How do I open the piano roll?" In a Midi track (create one using CTRL+SHIFT+T, "T" for "track"), highlight the section you want to add a midi clip to. Then, press CTRL+SHIFT+M for "Midi". Double click on the bar in the section you've inserted a midi clip into. 12:53 - This one wasn't a question, but for ease of navigability (these apply to piano roll and arrangement view): SHIFT+Scroll - Move from side to side CTRL + Scroll - Horizontal zoom ALT + Scroll - Vertical zoom, makes notes or tracks longer 13:00 - "Why did this D key stop working?" You may have moved the midi note or play tracker slightly before the beginning of the midi clip. He figures this out at 15:45ish 15:00 - The question wasn't asked, but it is important to note: If you press C or V, you will lower or aise your velocity respectively. Not super important for the serum patch you had because you had nothing set to velocity, but if you were wondering about the discrepency between the color of this note and the color of the note in a previous midi track, that would be the issue. 15:22 - "Why is there not a scroll bar?" For the same functionality, you'll scroll using the section at the top of the piano roll right underneath where you drag to make resize the window. You'll see the beat markers (1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 2.1, and so on); you will need to click and drag these to scroll with your mouse and no keyboard. It's in the same location as the one shown in FL after this, but it is just the beat markers instead of an actual functional GUI of a scroll bar itself. Alternatively, you can drag with a window in the bottom right underneath the piano roll. 17:43 - "What the f- is loop mode?" You'll find the "Loop" setting in your piano roll to the left in the "clip" settings. If I recall correctly, having this on will loop the clip when you extend it in arrangement view; but if you turn it off, it will simply make the midi clip longer. 18:45 - Some notes on automation in Ableton Press A to toggle Automation mode. When it is on, you will see parameters on the right underneath the title of your audio track. You can select the effect or instrument you are wanting to automate on the top bar and the parameters within those plugins on the bottom. At the bottom right of the selected track, you will see a "+" sign. If you click this, it will create a new lane showing the parameters you are automating. You can press B to enter Pencil Mode to draw automation. If you do not want it to snap to the grid, you can hold down ALT while you click and drag to design your automation fluently. If there is a shape you want, you can highlight the section in the arrangement view that you would like to automate, right click and select one of the shapes at the bottom of the popup menu. If you want to raise or lower a section, you can highlight that section and drag the line up or down. This will create four new points making a "square" shape.

I guess it’s second nature now because when watching the video I was like “wait is Ableton the one with ctrl+y??” But now I remember getting used to ctrl+alt+z initially when I started with fl
CTRL-Y is the universal Windows shortcut for Redo. Mac-oriented apps use CTRL-Shift-Z. FL uses CTRL-Alt-Z for some reason. Remember that FL had a weird undoing system in the past too. They improved it a lot a couple of years ago.
You should give bitwig a shot. I was an FL user and now use it as my main DAW. Similar workflow to Ableton but a lot less of a pain in the ass and clunky. Makes a lot more sense to someone coming from fl

Hi! Ableton user for 13 years here. Sorry you don't like the program! But, if there is anyone else confused by the same things, this feels like a good opportunity to have the explanations all in one place.
Here is a list of the questions and my answers:
7:00 - You have to click off of the sample to stop it from replaying constantly. You can click off in arrangement view or select a new file or folder in the browser on the left.
7:34 - "Why does it sound worse when I drag it in?" Typically the first thing I do when I load a sample, especially a drum sample, I have to adjust the Fades. 9:30 - "Don't I only get a certain amount of audio tracks?" In the demo version I'm not sure, but as far as I'm aware you have infinite audio tracks.

Ableton is kind of dumb with this compared to, like, Reaper for example, because you can only have one plugins folder. Instead of clicking and dragging, you can select your audio track and then double click the effect you want in the browser
12:30 - "How do I open the piano roll?"
In a Midi track (create one using CTRL+SHIFT+T, "T" for "track"), highlight the section you want to add a midi clip to. Then, press CTRL+SHIFT+M for "Midi". Double click on the bar in the section you've inserted a midi clip into.
12:53 - This one wasn't a question, but for ease of navigability (these apply to piano roll and arrangement view):
SHIFT+Scroll - Move from side to side
CTRL + Scroll - Horizontal zoom
ALT + Scroll - Vertical zoom, makes notes or tracks longer
13:00 - "Why did this D key stop working?"
You may have moved the midi note or play tracker slightly before the beginning of the midi clip. He figures this out at 15:45ish
15:00 - The question wasn't asked, but it is important to note: If you press C or V, you will lower or aise your velocity respectively. Not super important for the serum patch you had because you had nothing set to velocity, but if you were wondering about the discrepency between the color of this note and the color of the note in a previous midi track, that would be the issue.
15:22 - "Why is there not a scroll bar?"
For the same functionality, you'll scroll using the section at the top of the piano roll right underneath where you drag to make resize the window.
17:43 - "What the f- is loop mode?"
You'll find the "Loop" setting in your piano roll to the left in the "clip" settings. If I recall correctly, having this on will loop the clip when you extend it in arrangement view; but if you turn it off, it will simply make the midi clip longer.
18:45 - Some notes on automation in Ableton
Press A to toggle Automation mode.

I used just FL for years and I’ve been full Ableton since 2020, they definitely have their differences but it helps to be fluid with both.
They improved it a lot a couple of years ago.
nate being a WSU student makes so much sense honestly this really fills in the gaps for me
Bishu makes it look so easy, and eliminate makes fl look so easy.
They should just swap and see who can make the best beat in 2 hours. :D
Everybody talks about how ableton is so complicated but all my friends try to teach me FL and its so complicated T_T
I'll never forget FL studio, "ctrl+b for buplicate"
flatline remix was amazing
Now we wait for trying reaper
You should give bitwig a shot. I was an FL user and now use it as my main DAW. Similar workflow to Ableton but a lot less of a pain in the ass and clunky. Makes a lot more sense to someone coming from fl
"i'm gonna be playing these beats 'till the next millenium.."
__pauses__
"which, is gonna be in probably, like 1000 years. so get cozy"
"Ctrl+D is kinda pog" Ctrl+B in FL studio:
WHY IS IT B, as someone who did find the sanity to change daws WHY IS IT B
Buplicate
WOAH I JUST FIGURED OUT YOU CAN SCROLL DOWN IN FULL SCREEN ON THIS VIDEO! THANKS NATE!!!
The 20 empty tracks with nothing on em are sending me
So stoked about your flatline remix! I discovered Frost Children this last summer and I love their music! They're super creative, so I was really excited when I woke up today and spotify notified me that there was a new Frost Children remix by Eliminate and I was like WHAAAAT?? Goes hard bro, goes hard
2:01 "It's a video" -Nathan "Eliminate" Whatevehislastnameis
Shoutout to the guy who chatted "Its automatically programmed to your keyboard" to answer every question he asked 😂. Def confused the fk out of him.
"They even got mid in the name" lmao fucking gottem
Gotta admit, I enjoyed watching you suffer a lil too much 😂 the ableton learning curve be like that
That unreleased ID sounds fire
Pissing myself laughing when the complaint list pops up...
Every Eliminate video makes me happy :3
Eliminate should try reaper, it’s a very underrated daw and really customizable
I've tried Ableton, Protools and Fl. Reaper is by far my favorite.
Making drum patterns advice . Make a empty clip in the drum rack [ after loading your sounds ] then draw your pattern then all you gotta do is drag and drop your clip to the channel your drum rack is on in the arrangement view
Top 10 ableton live trial beats of 2023
hell yes, as an Ableton user, this is amazing and I've been waiting for another one since you released the last video
Nates lost looking at Ableton, but im lost in 90% of the technical music lingo 100% of the time. Wish i knew how to make music, but really just come for the bangers and comedy. Was hoping to maybe learn something, and learned that its even harder than i would ever imagine, when an actual producer is lost this badly, just from changing platforms. Thank you Nate for showing me how nearly $400 can sound like when you actually already know how to make music.
Dude. This video is exaggerated to hell and back. Don't get me wrong, Nate hates ableton. But he's putting on an act here. He's not really that lost. He's made his choice long ago not to use ableton. This video is just for views lol he's not really TRYING to switch to Ableton. If he was, he wouldn't have a funny comedy video to make
20 minutes of Nate complaining about another DAW. I love it.
sending this video to the CEO of Ableton
1:30 you're so M O I S T my guy
Issues with how nate makes an ableton beat start with the blatant disregard for use of the drum rack.
The auto warp immediately caused issues with the kick hahaha
I think what happened was the kick was clipping cause his master was at 0 db
Yeah he changed the BPM and you could visibly see all the waveforms changing as I'm yelling at the screen xD
My master has only ever been at 0 and I don't have clipping@@emdash8944
@@emdash8944 oh yeah. That too.
The duck-beat killed me
goes straight into arrangement view
More like unableton
yeah budd try using warp modes and the innovative stock plugins like corpus in FL
wait that ID at the end is nuts PLEASE RELEASE
19:42 it's like... welcome home
the new remix of Flatline is super doooope, love ur music Nate!!
the scroll function is bad at first yes, but when gotten used to it's actually amazing
Nate trying out Ableton is so inspiring.
Love you content dude
ctrl y is the normal undo function for pretty much every program on windows lmoa, as an ableton user ctrl z ctrl y being undo and redo was just muscloe memory, like ctrl c ctrl v being copy paste
Carl x is cut not copy
@@jasonemmanuel1031 oh shit didnt notice that, meant to type c not x lmoa
6:27 how many producers here play this same exact drum pattern when testing out samples
I AM SO MUCH ANGRY AT EVERYTHING HE MISSED LOL
Nice video though
"I though it was a master cuz it says master, thats my fault"
I have been using both fl studio and Ableton for years now. I prefer Ableton over Fl, it's simple and efficient.
Work flow in Ableton is much smoother than fl.
it is very subjective, it seems like a lot of people just want to have the "mine is betteR" mentality. i have ableton lite, but i havent been able to figure it out yet. hopefully ill be able to get as fluid and dynamic with it as i am with fl studio. i know pretty much everything in fl studio and can do anything in that daw, if i can manage to get that way with other daws, that would be the dream.
This is exactly how my first week with Ableton went jfc
Watching this gave me PTSD 🤣
I appreciate you trying Ableton again, thank you sir.
King shouldn't forget where the Gods walk 🙏
I feel like I'm about to make a spreadsheet looking at that thing.
im sold... im never switching from FL
Proud Ableton Live Lite user here (I can only use 8 tracks and I am SOOO happy about that)
