You need a bed buster for your skid steer to fluff up them stalls, you would save a lot of sand.

I don't want to say the stalls were installed at the wrong height when they were first put in. Being the recommendations for 1970 compared to 2020 are to completely different recommendations. Yes, i do realize that some of the stalls might have been installed before that, but that was just a comparison.
What seemed like the best way when the barn was built might not be the best way now. It's no different than the old guys going with a "comfort cab" in 1970 compared to now or even the seeding or fertilizer rates of then to now.
Our dairy barn was similar age. The one farm picture we have was from 1964 and the parlor wasn't built yet and the north silo had 1968 on it. So the parlor and milk room was built between 64 and 68.
We had a concrete bunk with an auger going down it and the stalls were similar. Parlor was setup as a herringbone with 4 on each side, but we had to wait until all 4 were to let them out instead of being able to let an individual in or out.
Yes, i do realize that some of the university studies is about the only thing a person can go off of some things. But as what you are doing is applying it to real world stuff instead of trying to do it on paper or a small scale.
Like South Dakota State university, they either sold their milk cows 6 months ago or will be selling them all in 6 months. South Dakota state, from what i can understand will still offer a "Dairy program" but is supposed to have some type of working relationship with a few bigger dairies near the university for learning purposes for students.

Best of luck to Lonnie with his future plans, some nice improvements to the farm, had the same problem here in Ireland, made similar changes and was a great success, your stalls look to be the right width but if they are too wide this will also cause cows to walk up and turn around.

Your heifers learn to lay backwards in the dry cow lot. We had it where we always had a handful of cows in the alley. Then moved the young heifers to a farm with cow size free stalls. After that, nobody laid in the alley, but then we had cows laying backwards. Your adjustments are good, but don't be surprised if they still lay backwards some

It was nice seeing Lance, again. Is this his last year college or does he have another year. I'm surprise to hear Lonny had left. Wherever he goes, hope he is happy and successful. Team work, getting things done. Dad, should have had safety goggles on, when using the cutting torch. I was afraid a piece of metal would fly up into his eye. Too bad the cows couldn't be litter trained😂

I have been watching your videos for a long time and I often wondered why your cubicles were so low, I thought that it might be something to do with the sand bed but I didn’t comment because I wasn’t sure if there was a valid reason for it, we have or cubicles 53 inches to the top bar from the floor but the mattress is 3 inches tick so realistically the top bar is 50 inches or so as the cow stands in,our cubicles are @ 4 foot centres and seven feet long for head to head and 7 foot 3 inches for head to wall a wise man told me that you build cubicles to give a cow a comfortable place to lay down which is relatively clean and dry but the most important thing is that she is comfortable basically if she is to be comfortable a large number will dung on the back of the bed and if you build a cubicle that a cow can’t dung on the bed it’s not going to be comfortable! So we clean the beds twice a day every day, we have a 3 inch fall on the bed so no fluid lies on the bed, the cows are happy and we haven’t had a cow lie the wrong way in years and we haven’t had a cow wedged in a cubicle in years either . Quite a few people over here are using the flexible plastic cubicle dividers now and some people think that they are great but others think that you need a lot of extra cubicles compared to cows because some cows are taking up a space and a half, I don’t know as I don’t have any. Regards from Ireland.

We used sand in our freestalls of our 750 head milking herd. Grooming the stalls was done every 8 hours. We had a fllush system for the alleys and recycled the sand. We milked in that system for 18 years.

@KipSieglerFarming1 we milked 3x/day. Fairly fine gardening rake, tines a few inches long and a squared edge shovel were what the crew used to pull out the "pies" and puddles and smooth out the back half of the stalls.

So so people don’t care anymore. Everything you do is ain’t safe on the farm anymore. One of these days one of the employees is gonna get trapped over by a cow and it’s common.
