I've been getting frustrated with the lack of precision from my old joysticks, especially when playing retro games on my Atari ST or Amstrad CPC. I decided to build a new joystick with microswitches to hopefully make my gameplay better! Using the D-SUB9 connector means it should also work on Commodore C64 and Amiga machines, making it a great all round retro capable joystick!

I think it looks awesome. Very homebrew computing, in the best way possible!

That turned out *stunning*. Yes, a metal or plastic case would work - but why would you? This is so much better.

What this is gold mine of a channel I found? Search eMac and your two part series was one of the top results, and now I'm watching some of your content.

Nice project! I am at the designing stage of my second DIY joystick as I would like to make one less bulky but it is really tricky finding out how to do keep it slim and hide the mounting screws too at the same time: If I want to elevate the middle part of the joystick to keep the sides low-profile then I need to remove the mounting plate but that way I have to mount the joystick from the upside instead of the bottom.

Yes it’s tricky. I wanted to make mine slimmer, but would need a metal case or something similar.

Thanks Stephen! I actually set out to try and replace the reed switches in the original joystick with micro switches, but couldn’t find the right size switch, so decided on this project instead.

Sweet how-to video! I was too lazy years ago and just bought an X-Arcade setup but wish I had the nuts to go with yours.
    Great video as always!

Thanks! Yes it was a fun afternoon project, but I have to admit I was tempted just to buy a ready made setup 😅

Hello, thanks for the video. I'm in the process of building my first retro-joystick. What is the name of those blue joints that you used as terminals for the wires?

Chunky it may be, but it looks awsome!
