Jesse Enkamp.💓
Thanks Jesse. Going to give this a look.
Xen-Do is London’s biggest McDojo
I have run a school for 32 years. I have made so many mistakes over the years. I have had 600 students active. I currently have maybe 150 students now, and I couldn’t be happier. My students are my family and friends. I love them, their families. I care for them and their kids. I am old now, 64 years. I have learned that student retention is trump! I teach them all that I know. I am learning new things from other more experienced martial arts masters and I pass it on to my students. The key is to train your students to be more than you ever were when you were in your prime and to develop them and their kids to be outstanding martial artist and members of society. Thus making the world a better place.
Love it! 👍 Thanks for sharing and please keep it up 🌟
I'm also
Not that I'm a school owner, but hope sometime in the future, but still good advice. The first dojo I went to in the area I know live didn't make me feel that welcome..especially when I was just called beginner all the time, they couldnt be bother with my name. So left. Now I'm training with a great bunch of guys who made me feel welcome from the start in another dojo... So it's all about being made to feel you are one of them, not just a number that will bring in the money...
Rule number one: ALWAYS KNOW YOUR STUDENTS NAME! 🔥🔥🔥
Sounds like cobra kai dojo....haha
Jesse, hello! First of all, your dojo looks amazing!
Secondly, you're philosophy of retention is spot on. It should be applied not just to dojos. Companies and agencies would greatly benefit from this type of mindset.
Thank you! Definitely. I’m no expert at business, but they say there’s no better sales person than a customer! 😄
That’s what I keep telling people!!! I’m in HR so I try to implement this mindset
"Not income but, impact." Its a powerful statement. Mr. Enkamp...its why you are successful.
My students that stayed with me found that they became better than the ones who didn’t really have the desire to stay and learn. I can no longer teach but I was always about quality and never about quantity. I am glad you are successful with your dojo.
As I mentioned about what makes it hard for me to practice my martial arts was back surgery that happened a few years ago because of cancer, but I still practice what I can to include some ki-ai exercises I put together to help practice breathing with dynamic tension and relaxed movements to practice the techniques for better speed and power as they all practice. I practice this myself along with other exercises that I can. I also like checking out your ideas even though I don’t agree with all of them you do have many good things in your points about the martial arts and so I keep watching and even learning and am willing to examine some of the new areas that I can possibly even experiment with. My methods have been tested and work quickly and well, but I don’t believe that my way is the only way. Thanks for your thoughts and videos and keep on training and having fun with the seriousness of the martial arts.
Great advice Jesse. Your martial arts school is such a good example! So impressed that your mom set this up all by herself, much respect 🙇🏻♂️
Thank you! Team work makes the dream work :-)
LOVE that quote at the beginning! Awesome job of consistently delivering high-quality, valuable information on and off the mats. 👏
Thank you! I appreciate it 🌟
Yes
The thing that sometimes keeps me in the dojo when I want to give up is that atmosphere
Everyone is just so kind to one another, ready to help if they see you struggling with some technics etc
It’s not just our senseis but like everyone there tbh
So
I really like my dojo
And I’m not gonna leave it any time soon for sure
You are living proof! Keep it up 😄👍
This dude is amazing he doesn't say unsuccessful, instead he says less successful.
Thank you Jesse for your massive contribution to Karate and Martial arts as a whole!
Just doing what I love! 🙏
You r Always so generous to share the pearl of wisdom 🙏🥰
Very True said about quality. Thanks for video. Need much more dojo that focus on Quality and student retention around us for producing good karateka
Absolutely. Glad you liked it!
Wow! very impressive school! More impressive, is the use of the word, "Mcdojo!!"
Thanks, we’ve spent a lifetime building it ☺️
Beautiful mesage as always sensei! Saludos desde Concepción, Chile!
Your dojo blows my mind, it’s huge!! Although I am from a very small country, there’s all of 5 people at our dojo lol
Indeed some important points 👌
Thanks 👍
Glad you found it helpful! 😊
Thanks for this, it is something I do naturally. Definitely something I can put more effort in, thanks for the advise.
Another advantage of student retention is that it inevitably leads to student aquisition when you enthousiastic students bring their friends and family. I currently train at a small, but great Kyoukushin dojo, and i have, so far, gotten my girlfriend to join, as well as 2 friends, and i got 2 more friends interested. Plus, my girlfriend has a friend who is interested as well. Because i feel like i get so much out of this dojo, this creates almost like a snowball effect.
Yes! That’s exactly the point :-) It’s called WoM (Word-of-Mouth) and is one of the most effective forms of marketing
I always felt relieved and relaxed inside our dojo. It never felt like a new or strange place to me!. In fact I found out more about me from there!. Thank you sensei for these valuable points🙏🙏🙏.
Great to hear! 👍
This is great Jesse san! and you are correct. Building a family is better than having clients.
I’ve never called my students ”customers”... feels so weird! 😜
you are like the most humble man in the world
I dropped out because of expensive dues in So. California. USSD Mission Viejo back in 2007 charged $250;per month. Plus belt tests in the hundreds too. I would have had to work two full time jobs to continue. I was devastated, got all way to blue belt....
Thank you!
I’m in HR is this is exactly what I try to do in the culture - serves a greater purpose
It's been 30 yrs since I was in a dojo, yet i still train and have forgotten nothing. Will be teaching my children myself
Hey Jesse my karate nerd dude. Sorry I missed a couple of your previous videos due to my busy schedule at college. And especially for this video, sorry to hear that martial arts schools are very close to failing businesses. But let's hope your sensei mom keeps running your family dojo as our last hope of success. Keep up the vids and the research of martial arts schools to keep on track of businesses.
I almost did not click on this video, but I saw your first sentence and knew this was the person I want to listen to.
Thank you!
I’ve learnt so much from you,Jesse!
Fantastic! Makes me happy to hear. What else would you like to learn? 😃
Actually, i wanted to learn more about Karate. Just make any videos about Karate, And i will watch it, and definitely learn something from you!
thank you!!
Thank you very much
Great video. I’ll have to go chk it out. I don’t have my own school but I’d still like to see your 3 tips 🙂
Thanks jesse, I am also gonna start a dojo in 6 months
due to circumstances i have trained at various Shotokan karate schools, and have also touched other martial Arts, some i felt unwelcome as there was a major focus on "the click" others i felt very welcome, yet others i was give a guilt trip if i missed training (a phone call to ask where i was, unless told them prior i would not be training) yes i full understand the "quantity over quality" factor, yet also in focussing too much on established students, it can put new students off (just personal observation)
Amazing video!
Thank you! 😄
Nice video😀 i love you karate nerd/jesse
Your facility is impressive!
Jesse. Is. Generous.. caring..
Humble..smart!!!
And. Successful!!!
Well, right now we are at social media era. We can not argue with that. But I think something that equally important for martial arts school is achievements. The senseis/senpais continuous achievements is one of the key to retain old students and attract new students. And achievements is one of the important content for our social media, right?
One day, I'd love learning by you👌
Awesome Jesse, I did sing up several weeks ago, got the first video but have not received the second one. Please explain what do I need to do to get the second video. Thank you!
Check your spam folder, maybe it got stuck there :-)
thanks from colombia!
Is this your Home Dojo? Very nice indeed. Separate rooms for training. Well organized, maybe one day mine will be half as good as yours =] Added: Fully agree on student retention! My Dojo is very small but the shortest trained with me is now just over a year and then three to seven years. I actually need to add some new blood, but my ways are not so popular in my area vs. what the larger McDojo's offer.. quantity over quality and as I do not advertise most are not aware of me. I don't want a large Dojo either I am the Sole teacher ATM.
Hi Jesse,
I see in the video you have lots of students doing Muay thai and mma as your core or base art is Karate do you get that many students in the karate classes and can a traditional karate school survive without adding additional arts.
Jesse enkamp please upload a video karate heavy bag training?
Sure!
@@KARATEbyJesse Thankyou
as u know especially teens come n go. so, it‘s important to let them have achievements like tournament experience. in best case winning a medal. not getting the next belt. plus, pushing talents by preferring the better ones leads to neglecting the weaker ones... u know...
I trained Bujinkan at first. Went to Japan, ended up with an 8th Dan. But I felt something was missing, no sparring etc...
I then got into Tai Chi and Choy Lay Fut Kung Fu, but it was all so traditional it didn t move things on.
I then got into Cheng Hsin, probably the most sophisticated system I learned, I trained with peter Ralston in the US, amazing experience, I still consider myself a student of Cheng Hsin.
On the advice of Peter I decided to try Muay Thai and some form of grappling. Been into Muay Thai a while now, absolutely love it.
Done a little bit of Judo and BJJ , if I train consistently I get into it, if I miss a few classes I m go backwards.
In any event, I can teach Bujinkan, Cheng Hsin and even Muay Thai.
I try to teach people all I know because there s good in all of it.
Problem is, I don t know what to call what I do.
A joint lock in Bujinkan, an interaction principle from Cheng Hsin or a kick from Muay Thai all work. So why would I not show all of the above?
I ve no idea how to market myself these days.
Oss sensei. Sensei I wish every martial arts instructor was like you. Then the world of martial arts would have been a much better place. Not every black belt have the ability to teach the world should understand that. I mean the way you teach and train is so simple and easy that we can learn very easily. But there are teachers who waste 2 hours in one class but can't teach kids a simple thing. You are the best sensei. Oss 😊
Any karate dojo you recommend in Colombia? Otherwise, do you teach online? You're such an awesome sensei and I'd join your dojo but distance is too far and my possibilities to move to Sweden are remote for now.
I like to see a video on control contact and if the school is not doing no contact whatsoever if it's bad for your for your martial
you were in Miami? What? Cool. I don't practice Karate but if I heard you were in my city I'd try to go just cuz I like the knowledge you give and you come off as very likable.
Yes! I taught a seminar, too bad you didn’t attend. Make sure you follow me on FB and IG to not miss upcoming opportunities :-)
Jesse can you make a video on how to beat a an opponent how practices MMA and how to avoid a takedown by them? And By the way you are the best karate channel on UA-cam.
That video exists already, check my channel 👍👍👍
Ok, Thanks a lot.🤗👍🏻
Our small collective of similar interests is only alive because of community-building effort that went into the enterprise. Despite multiple crises, including latest quarantine. I suppose social media is how you engage people when your collective is larger than ours.
Man Ur really cool😎
this place is INSANE!
I would enjoy every much training and talking with you .😁
Hey I have a huge question but do you think a karate online school works?? I've been in this program for about 7 months already and the style they teach is uechi ryu and I really dont feel like I'm learning anything because im practically training myself...so is it better for me to stay with the online karate school or just leave it???
I don’t think it’s a great idea.
@@KARATEbyJesse great thanks!
So, I might be moving. Where I'm moving to there I'd no martial arts places. (They might be a boxing gym buy I think it closed down)
I told my sensei and he told me to open up my own club. Do you have any advice on starting your own club.
If you can teach martial arts in school or college you will be successful. Also if you do that either or you have a day job and teach martial arts part time you will be successful.
Wow, right now i don't have my own Dojo but soon it will. I wanna help my Master to be more attractive our Dojo to the students that's want to learn martial arts, yeah sensei Jesse was right now a days everyone is more on social media the best way to get attractive is to get engaged to them to where's everyone right now whichnis on the internet. Its makes me more to inspire by what's Sensei Jesse it's not about everything is counts, to be counted and not everthing to be counted, is counts" better to have retention than acquisition.
Hey Jessie thanks for the video that's some great information just wanted to share my story so me and my son have been going to the same Shotokan dojo for a little over a year and we just didn't feel like we were getting the proper instructions from some of the instructors.. some of the instructors were great to work with and some of the other instructors just seemed a little edgy. And also the lessons seem to be always pretty much exactly the same and quite frankly we were getting a little bored we were hoping to do different things such a sparring.. so basically we had to find another place to go to I'm not saying I won't go back but we felt like we needed something new.. your dojo is basically something exactly what we've been looking for you have a little bit of everything good luck and best wishes
Find what works best for you! Thanks for chiming in and good luck! 👍
I don't understand how you could possibly teach a class that big... How could you give any individual student the attention they would need to learn properly? Did those classes have multiple teachers, or am I missing something?
Yes we have 35 instructors
@@KARATEbyJesse Ah, that would explain it. Good work, I hope things go well for you. :)
You should make a grey and black bag have the logo grey and the rest black
The way to become a profitable martial arts school is to create a website where people have to pay to learn the secrets of using social media to become a profitable martial arts school.
It seems most martial arts studios these days are basically childrens daycare facilities with occasional jumping jacks and kicking.
I'm in a great kung fu class. While the classes don't have a lot of people in them, the ones that are there have been there for quite some time. He's a traditionalist but also makes earning the next sash attainable. He says he'd never make it if everyone had to stick to being able to do every move with 100% perfection like back even 20 years ago. There are the guys and gals that can do that in his classes and I think those are the ones who'll carry the torch down the road. The rest of us get to advance as long as we get the essence and show interest and focus on our forms. He doesn't pass people if they come at the tests looking lazy or can't get the form mostly correct. He does want you to work. But he says he'd never have a business if the old standards were maintained. There aren't many kung fu schools in the Pacific NW. I made it to gold sash fairly quickly by doing the work and getting the form correct...but no way am I tournament material. I'm older and pretty darn overweight but I love his approach and know that there's incentive and a reason to be there. He has great feedback and wants you to get it right. As always, nice video Jesse!
Thanks for chiming in! Sounds like you’re on the right path 🙏 Keep it up! 😊
I'm going to open a karate school soon.Im 20 year old.
I want to make my career in kaeate .. bless me Sir 🙏🏻🥋🇮🇳
You got this!!!
Wow what would I give for such an establishment with the amount of space to offer different kinds of martial arts classes.
I wonder how people can effectively train packed like in those Thai and mma classes. Perhaps they split in two rooms after warm up?
Exactly! This is why we’re tearing down the walls (for the third time this year) to make room for everybody.
@@KARATEbyJesse ok. Anyway, it's a beautiful gym!
Much appreciated 🌟
Damn that place is huge
And you should make posters
I get that not all children can pass the yellow belt test but some instructors are almost giddy about failing students and publicly humiliating them. And then they wonder why the students don't ever come back.
Say hi to Indonesia please!
hi to Indonesia please!
Jesse Enkamp technically, you did not say "hi to Indonesia please", you "write" "hi to Indonesia please" 😂. by the way, I love your videos......specially all the stretch and exercise routine....the motto of the school I am going to is "we need more practice" 😂
Hi:-) from Morocco
Hello!
Sensie can you tell me how to get body like you
Eat clean, train dirty
Glad you're successful, but if a school is that crowded per class it would discourage me to join.
That’s why we just expanded our location. Sty tuned for a new video where I take you on a tour of the dojo!
Do u have a franchise jesse san
No
did you know. that less students are better than more students.
💪💪💪💪💪👍👍👍👍👍🙌🙌🙌🙌😇😇😇😇😇😇
Do you know in karate kiokushin have weapons for fight like nungaku or sai. And do you know in kiokushin have self defense from knife and more weapons. What are you think for this style. You are the best. Im from bulgarian and i like your videos
Weapons are mostly practiced in schools and styles that specialize in Kobudo
@@KARATEbyJesse do you know kyokushin have self defense from knife and more weapons. Sory my english is not very well
😘
All about what you bring to your students and what the other schools don’t. Typically here in the states folks want more well rounded styles. Striking, clinching, grappling, self defense from weapons and competition.
The secret s a u c e
No Karate? :O
For me it was Way Of The Exploding Fist, Streetfighter II, Panza Kickboxing - all inspired me to make my own game: ua-cam.com/video/Gla82AdvCRQ/v-deo.html
So you do karate or mma now?🤔🙄
Fourth! 😑

Continuo sem saber porque não entendo inglês
