Great video Sir !! First off I respect your honesty !!!! I have a daniel boone pellet smoker for the last 5 years and love it !!! I just seen these videos on this new Masterbuilt where you have to use a torch to light and crap !!! I just push a button !!! I am not convinced that the MB is better than my smoker !! I do thank you for sending me in the direction for using pecan pellets I will be using them for thanksgiving smoked turkey I also throw in a small ham to double smoke it !! Thank you for sharing your knowledge on smoking !!!
Great cook,it's like you're reading my mind I was searching UA-cam for a comparison of these 2 pits. I have the masterbuilt 800 and I've been eyeing the Lonestar for a while, looks like the Lonestar will be my next pit beautiful looking ribs by the way great job.
Hello from Austria ! I have many different smokers. The conclusion is always the cook not the cooker. You have to adjust wood, temperature, humidity, rub, cook time and you find on all the smokers a perfect result. Nice videos Tommy ! Cheers from Austria !
Yep! I ran wood only on my XT yesterday. Could do about an hour and 20 running on a full split no charcoal at 275. Clean thin blue the whole time. Going to do a run today with full split surrounded by charcoal on some ribs.
Love to get me either of those pits! They both look like winners. Love me some of those Smokin' Pecan pellets too, such a clean and better smoke than other pellets out there. Good stuff brotha!
Awesome comparison Tommy! Totally agree with you, the Lonestar edges out the Masterbuilt barely because of the pecans. This definitely was a good video and surprised with the results. Have an awesome weekend ahead! Cheers brother 🍻
Those pecan shell pellets are amazing, game changer, I mix them with post oak chips in 2 large square amazin tubes, put under meat grate, fan in pellet smoker keeps it burning for about 4 hours, put grate over them and meat on grate, run lumberjack competition blend for constant 225° smoking brisket, them pecan shell pellets and post oak chips lay out that blue smoke, comes out tasting like craft bbq from Texas top bbq places
Tommy, could you put pecan shells in to the masterbuild along with lump charcoal and get a great smoke with the shells added? Have you done prime-rib with the rotisserie on the Masterbuild?
Man I really enjoyed that video! Great stuff. Thankfully my LoneStar will be here within a couple weeks. Now I’ve been hearing about these pecan pellets, and the smoke they put out. I’m gonna have to go order these.
think which one you like will come down to what your used to using fuel wise. i had the lone star pellet smoker and was very disappointed in the smoke flavor. no matter what brand of pellets i used, just could not get the smoke flavor i was looking for. would think ppl that are used to using charcoal will much rather prefer the gravity smoker. theres also a massive price difference between the 2 smokers.
Not really a fair comparison. To compare you need to use the exact same woods. I’ll bet if you used cherry pellets in the Lone Star, the Masterbuilt would have won.
The rack off the Lone Star definitely had a beautiful mahogany color ... but the MB did what it was supposed to do, and they looked great as well ... thumbs up to both pits
Do you ever cook with the Masterbuilt in the rain? I also see you use 2 Masterbuilt fire starters does that work better because 1 for me doesn't work well
I always use more wood than you do and I put it in the hopper. Interesting that the pellet grills are catching up in the smoke flavor department though.
yoo tommy thx for the video man. I've been thinking about buying the XT and im glad you did this comparison. based on your results, do you think the rib tasted THAT much better to justify the price of the LSG? thanks man
The both of them look so delicious and tasty. I taught that the Masterbuild would win because of using real chunks of wood. But I guess the pecan pellets helped the Lone Star Grillz. Great job Tommy. Have a fantastic day and CHEERS.
Hey Tommy, if you had to make 1 purchase, which pellet or gravity fed grill would it be and why, please consider the Lone Star is twice as much as the XT
Nice review for sure. I was rooting for the MB because I've got the MB800, and of course everyone wants what they have to win a competition, but sometimes we have to concede when something else does better. My only suggestion would be to use the same type of wood in both smokers. In the MB you used cherry wood, but in the Lone Star you used pecan pellets. That difference may have affected the color or taste.
Of course and good points. Im still learning the MB and have used way more wood at times in my older 1050/800. Ill keep experimenting! That said,. The MB is still the pit of the year. IMHO
Not trying to be a keyboard warrior or anything, truly an honest question. I've noticed you typically use the second rack on your Masterbuilt (whether it's the new XT or 1050/800) when you're doing a low and slow smoke/cook. Is there a reason why you don't use something like a baking sheet to place under your protein on the main grate? Just speaking from my own experience, placing a cheap $10 baking sheet (or $2 disposable tin) under the protein provides better indirect heat, and it also catches all of the drippings, which makes for an easier clean up. Would like to know your thoughts in either a comment or perhaps even a video. Thanks for your continued feedback and content!
@@thegalleryBBQ I’m saying / asking why don’t you place a baking sheet on the main grate, while the protein is on the 2nd rack grate. That way it’s super easy clean up (no lifting out the grates or grease tray), plus it has the added benefit of blocking direct heat from the manifold since the baking sheet is on the main grate.
Why does the gravity cooker have problems with smoke? Seems you should be able to get more smoke than any other just because you can load that chimney. Not just this vid, any of them. Open that lid and it looks like it's turned off.
I wish you had gone pecan to pecan. Pecan is a stronger wood flavor compared to cherry. Cherry is more subtle.....I love cooking with pecan chunks. I do tend to cook with fruit for my wife who doesnt like as strong of a wood flavor.
@@WeegiesBackyardBBQ You are correct. I was just talking to someone last night and mentioned how it probably would have been different with a different pellet grill.
Tommy my guy.....well I guess it all boils down to what flavor profile you're feeling for ...but from the start I knew the LoneStar was going to get the edge ..let's face its hard to beat the LoneStar from most of the reviews I've seen. Ciao 🍻
If you are going to compare anything, you have to compare apples to apples and oranges to oranges. You smoke one with pecan and one with cherry. This not a fair comparison. I do believe though, the LSG would have won.
Well since I paid zero for it all it's all relative to me. That's why in the video i did stress that everything used was provided to the show. No worries, im still learning the XT and will be adding way more wood next cook. Cheers

Looking back, your right. I regular pellet wouldn't stand a chance against the MB... Those pecans are something else!

Thanks 👍 Next time more wood in the MB
Tommy, could you put pecan shells in to the masterbuild along with lump charcoal and get a great smoke with the shells added? Have you done prime-rib with the rotisserie on the Masterbuild?
