Among the history of the Royal Swedish Ballet, founded in 1983, the Nutcracker, was already the fifth rehearsal of this piece. It had its premiere in December 1995 and was created by the then 40-year-old Pär Isberg, who was a member of the company as a soloist and is now an international choreographer. Isberg used the children's book Petter and Lotta and Christmas by Elsa Beskow, which is very popular in Sweden, to replace the Hoffmann characters with characters from Swedish folklore. Uncle Drosselmeier, for example, who brings the two children the Nutcracker as a Christmas present, is Uncle Blue in this case, and the Nutcracker turns out to be a charcoal burner who turns into a prince and dances the great pas de deux with the uncle's maid at the end - a very special, fascinating reading of this timeless ballet classic.

Wow. The storyline is original, the costumes and choreography beautiful and at times very funny, and the GPD stunning. If I were to take a child to see their first ballet, it would be this.
And the underlying critique of class distinctions spot on.
I've watched several versions of The Nutcracker Ballet this season... sampled the best from all over the world... this one is by far my favorite!! Bravo for a beautifully crafted production filled with humor, whimsy, unique costumes, and well-acted choreography that enhances the improved storyline to perfection. I can't get enough!
I agree. Great production. I also learned about some Swedish customs. Peaked my curiosity and looked them up.
It is returning this year with the Royal Swedish Ballet after not being performed since the holiday season 2018!
Mele Kalikimaka from Hawai'i. I am so very glad I found this! I think this is the most wonderful, mysterious, well danced, and magical version I've ever seen. Really! I will have to look into the story of the Christmas/Yule figures. I like them a lot...elemental...again, Mahalo nui loa.
Interesting version of the Nutcracker Suite ...one thing about it is that there is a different spin to it from one place to another ... never a dull moment ...be it city or country .... a well deserved congratulations to all ...

It was quite a surprise to bump into this version 22 years after... Exactly at this time I was working as a guest ballet master for the Royal Swedish ans could recognise quite a lot of them. Good memories of a great winter!!!!!!
This was by far the best Nutcracker I've seen this year. I love the way they mix the Swedish story of Petter and Lotta and traditional Swedish Christmas traditions with the Nutcracker story. The dance was spot on and the Nutcracker/Cavalier is soo hot! Love it!

I love t their vision on how they interpret The Nutcracker Ballet. Refreshing to see a different spin from the traditional ones. The choreography was equally as beautiful and the dancers brought it to life. Well done!

I really enjoyed this different version of "The Nutcracker". The dancers were animated and excellent. And the staging was quite beautiful and in keeping with E.T.A. Hoffman's quite dark original Nutcracker story. Thank you for posting.

Some good dancing though.
Needed more dynamic choreo in the first scenes in the house, it did not flow well, there is a problem with the corps not being synchronized., the snowflake costumes were awful and needed a more elegant choreo with more interesting patterns and jumps. These dancers just need to be pushed further and I think they have the ability to go to the next level. I actually liked the boy and girl idea but it has to have better choreo, I dont think its the dancers that are weak . If you are going to replace the original story then you need to make it more exciting and more beautiful scenes. All around needs major costume improvements.

I really disliked this version of the Nutcracker! I believe that they have never gotten a libretto for this ballet. You can have some freedom in what you can do on stage but not what they did. And whole ballet is very gloomy and dark, really no much of a backdrop, costumes are white or dark colors. Nutcracker has horns like a demon. Only thing I liked is that all dancers are exceptionally good. I would fire choreographer though.
