This is just not a "Ballet". THIS is "THE NYC Ballet Co Production" and it is absolutely THE most beautiful version of this Story. I was fortunate to have a few Friends who danced with the Company and this Ballet in particular. So for years I would go by myself to support my Friends and it was always so special and a treat. When my Son & Nephews turned 6yrs, we started going every Year and inadvertently established a wonderful, Family Christmas Tradition. We'd all Taxi from School and Work, & meet for early Dinner at a Restaurant right across the street from Lincoln Ctr. They hung a huge, decorated Christmas Tree "upside down" in the center of the Restaurant. Memorable for sure! When the Kids turned around 10yrs, we asked them if they wanted to stop going & do something else instead of the Ballet? There was always an emphatic response of "No"!! So for almost 15yrs and more, Christmas didn't seem Christmas without The NYC Ballet Nutcracker! Amazingly, it was always so wonderful each & every time. Our Family remains SO grateful to have that opportunity to go see some of the greatest Dancers in the World dance this beautiful Story. Truly Special. I hope they NEVER change the Sets in that awful way when Companies try to "modernize". The FEELING this Set created in the stunning Koch Theatre is like no other. Nothing can match that truly Magical Snowflake Dance when the Snow begins to gently fall - breathtaking. So Thank you NYC Ballet Co. Thank you Lincoln Center. and Thank You NYC for continuing to embrace the Arts and offer Experiences to the Public, those like The Nutcracker, that enrich and fulfill our Hearts and Minds! p.s. another THANK YOU to whomever posted this so I can continue to share this particular Production with my Grandchildren!!
The American Ballet Theatre's version is the definitive version as far as I'm concerned, if only because of Baryshnikov's virtuoso performance in the title role.
Thank for sharing your family tradition. Maybe your once little ones will share some of their love for ballet with their little ones over time. I’m a New Yorker too and there’s nothing as special as a night out at a performance at Lincoln Center. We were very fortunate . Merry Christmas! 🎄
Great job NYC Ballet. Having so many children in the production makes it special since The Nutcracker is a child's fantasy. The 1993 version is also on UA-cam and is pretty much the same except there is a narrator.
I just think this is the only version that does it right. So many versions are so slow and technical, which is impressive, but I don't think suits well for a story that is essentially just a little girl dreaming about dancing candy. But Balanchine really understood that this has to be the most whimsical, delicious looking, cheerful spectacle. And it works so well.
Absolutely, agree with you. It is the most beautiful version ever! Exactly as it should be. I've always had problems with Marie being danced by an adult female! The choreography is spectacular! It`s the perfect version!
I really like this version in that it keeps the same Clara and Prince throughout rather than swapping them out for a more mature couple to do the more advanced dancing in the second act. Also it hasn't extended Dossellmeyer's role to a universal compere as seems to have become the fashion. After all what maiden having a first romance with a young Prince would want her creepy old uncle popping up all over the place.
Thank you for recording this omg… I saw this tonight and I loved it. Nutcracker’s transformation into a lil boy was the best three seconds of the month so far.
the snowflake piece is always my favorite to see how each production interprets their own snowflakes and their accessories (they’re holding what looks like snowballs, the russian ballet used snowball headbands, etc) and really makes it their own!!

the choreography was so beautifully and uniquely done for this whole performance! my favorite part is the snowflakes!! it always has been my favorite part of the nutcracker
The sets in this are just amazing. And I loved the way they did the kids peeking through the keyhole and making the “wall” sheer. Pure genius. Thanks for uploading. I enjoyed it.
I love this classic version of the ballet, every detail to illustrate Clara-Marie's dream is done so beautifully, the sets, the costumes, the music and of course the dancing! Thank you so much for posting.
Never mind comments on the NYC Ballet, the conductor and orchestra, the dancers. It's the music I'm here for! I am so lucky that Tchaikovsky wrote this beautiful and imaginative work, and that in these times, I can listen to a recording of it.
In 1996, when I was a baby, roughly over 1 year old, I slept throughout almost all of the Nutcracker. I, then, woke up with the sound of the Coda playing and with the dancers as the sugar plum fairy and her cavalier. From then on, I hardly recognized what the ballet's story, was. Until, one day, back in the mid 2010s, I discovered the NYC Ballet production created by George Balanchine. I have no doubt, ever since, that this is the perfect ballet adaptation to produce with Tchaikovsky's music. I saw a couple of others elsewhere, but nothing could compare to this production. As a classically trained musician from a young age, I wish to say that this production of the Nutcracker by NYC ballet is very wonderful, very fitting for the Christmas spirit, and very unforgettable!
I absolutely loved it great job guys.....I also loved that yall had kids in it because kids add so much joy to the show.......in December I was in a production of The Nutcracker with Ballet Indiana and it was an all children's Nutcracker with the added adults in the party scene Drosselmeyer and Mother Ginger. New York City Ballet Nutcracker makes me tear up because my dance studio does Nutcracker NYCB style (Balanchine style), and ive done many of these parts with practically the same dances. It just makes me want it to be Nutcracker performance times again. My studio just now performed Nutcracker a few weeks ago, and I cried at bows for the last show. The dancing, music, and story is just so beautiful. I’m very excited to perform next year and for what part I will get.

This is my favorite version. The only changes I would make are calling her Clara and having the Russian dance be the actual Russian traditional dance (idk the name). But those are just minor things, in truth this production is perfection and it’s so nostalgic. Wonderful show thank you for sharing!

Wish someone would write a book on the many aspects of putting on a production of this magnitude.

I think that is the same set that they used back in the early 90's. I used to go see it as a child and it still looks the exact same.
It was built to last for years. Nutcracker always sells out and is a ballet company's bread and butter.
Wonderful.

I was just learning out school and and we watched the same exact video. In music it was so fun now I'm watching it again 😁 I love it
Hi I would love 50 said you love this comment
It’s always fun the watch live.
Lovely production, everything perfect except it’s the wrong dance of the Sugar Plum fairy for me. Still I did enjoy it a lot, the musicians were particularly fabulous. Thank you for sharing this video.
Virtuose Tänzerinnen und Tänzer, geniale Choreographie und wunderbare Kostüme. 😸😸😸
Balanchine's version is the definitive one, and I watched it for many years on PBS. I don't have cable TV, and I suspect it has moved to cable lately.
So much enjoyment watching this wonderful performance, thank you. I feel like the video resolution was higher until recently, was the high res version taken down?
Thank you so much. Pls could you upload 1993 version with Macaulay Culkin?

Wonder how they remember where to be on stage throughout the whole party scene. Great job!
They have "marks" on the floor and they practice to be right on their mark.
