I got pretty good at Spelunky but Spelunky 2 is a whole different ball game. Join me as I try to unravel the mysteries of the moon, and defeat Olmec and conquer the dungeons all over again!

About this game:

FYI the smiling ghost doesn't actually try to kill you. Even though it's super fast, once it reaches you it will just fly in circles around your character. Don't panic when you see it barreling towards you.

@@abuttandahalf She is pretty scary yeah, and of course you can move into her even though she just circles, and then later there's two circlers instead of one, extra scary.
@Al Dente When you take a picture of the ghost with the camera she will show her feminine side to you.
She also has lore.
There's actually 13 Yangs, the guy from the first game and his 12 sons. The turkey Yang is the youngest.

Here's some jungle tips since you're ok with a bit of mechanics spoilage:
Moon challenge and black market can't show up in the same floor iirc
I don't think any Children of the forest show on 2-1
if you go in any subspace in a black market floor you can hear the black market music but muffled, it's quite different from a regular jungle subspace music
This is correct. Also Black Market doesn’t show up in 2-1 either as far as I’m aware, so really on that floor you only need to focus on collecting treasure/items and Monty
Yep. Children of the forest always show up on 2-2, 2-3, and 2-4.
It also drives me crazy the amount of people I watch play this that don't notice the black market music in the subspace, lol.
Extra tek: Monty is always inside the black market when it appears, so no dog almost guarantees black market (I say almost because there could be a caveman/Tun selling him)
@@andresvalera1430 usually it's easier to go into a backworld (like Forest Child rooms) and listen for music or even check for two exits with compass

Been watching NL since High School, I have my last university exam tomorrow. I’ll have watched NL for three big phases of my life, pogging out of my mind. Can’t wait to be watching Isaac episode 30000 in the nursing home
yeah feels weirdly personal to see NL have a kid and then realise youre now as old as NL was when you started watching him. Thats my case at least

Correction 2, there are many Yangs out there on the moon since his journal entry specifically says he's one of many sibling sons of Yang from HD.
In this episode I only just realised that the moles have giant noses, not weird eyeless skulls.

They need to do something about the lava in the path of the drill it's just terrible
It's not the lava itself because you can just wait for it to stop spilling over the edge. It's the lava men that get you from off screen while climbing
@@hheecckk526 no, the lava itself is pretty bad too because it can look like it's not dripping anymore, then randomly send another drop many seconds later. I've been insta killed by dripping lava after I went all the way through Vlad's castle. Unless they changed that to somehow limit the amount of time it can drip (possible, they've updated a lot since release)
just put some dirt blocks on it and You're fine
@@joehemmann1156 that's true but my rule of thumb is to wait and see how the lava is acting. Look and see if there's any other places where lava could drop and hope for the best. I have been hit from the occasional extra drop as well but I've been pretty good at spotting if it's done for good or not
I tend to drop 1 or 2 bombs if I have em into the lava to create more of a path for the lava to leave
The ghosts are predictable. When the big ghost splits into 2, the happy ghost does circles around you but won’t try to touch you. But the sad ghost chases you for a hug lol.

that's a pretty obvious connection right there. also if you make 7 mistakes in name Dracula, you get Tusk.

I don’t know what the fix for the drill is, but having to wait for lava to drain is definitely something I think needs to be looked at. Any time you’re just stood there waiting is a problem in this game.
tbh when I see the drill over lava and have the bombs, I just bomb through the bottom of the stage and keep my udjet eye. It's a useful item in its own right

Yeah, I think Volcana needs love in general. Unless they come out and just say "it's less of an alternate and more an intentional hard path", if it's supposed to be an even close to equivalent alternate path, there's just no incentive. Yeah, guaranteed cape. For that, you give up the eye (where you keep it in the jungle), give up all the items in the black market (which they actually just BUFFED by resetting the market prices to 1-1), lose a much higher likelihood of paste (due to big spiders), and give up the children of the forest. It's just not even close to worth. At the very least I think they should guarantee a shop spawns on every level through Volcana. That would make up a little for the black market loss in that path.
@@joehemmann1156 I THINK the draw is supposed to be vlad's cape itself and the bonus blood from it, which can be really useful post-ankh, but you're right, they do need to give it more on the whole since jungle has overwhelming positives. One diamond from van horsling ain't enough
There's a few ways to see if your floor has a black market, the first way is to see if in a background cave, if it has a different music track, and the second of course is seeing if it blinks. If you have a challenge on the floor the black market won't be on that one.

About the death to ghost in the first run:
The smaller ghosts have different mechanics which are valuable to know, since you could have escaped them.
The happy ghost is fast BUT it will never actively chase you. It will close in and then circle around you. Unless you jump into it, it will not touch you.
The sad ghost on the other hand will chase you down and hit you, BUT it’s way slower. In the case of that run, you only had the happy ghost close to you so you had time to get to a clearing with more space to manoeuvre before sad ghost caught up.
There’s also a 3rd phase to the ghost, one minute after the ghost appears. (30 sec for 2nd phase). The 3rd phase has FOUR ghosts. One happy, one sad, one scared and one angry. These have similar mechanics to the two ghosts in phase 2, but shuffled around a bit. The angry ghost being fast AND actively chasing you (yikes)
Hot NL tip: don't look at the length of the video so you don't know if he dies immediately 😂

Hey NL, if you jump on the near ladder when the hedgehog is chasing you he will stop short. If you jump up on the ladder on the far side, he will follow through.

For example
Shooting Monty point blank with the shot gun moments before he could walk through the exit was an incredible moment for this series.
The new ghost mechanics make them more easily manageable.
I don't use the drill anymore because of dying to lava, I look for a crush trap at the bottom and use that and some bombs now, much safer, also, if you just use bombs you can get down for around 6, hitting tnt to help the processes where I can
You gotta be patient when going down the drill chain, let most of the lava flow down. I usually wait until 2:30ish to finally go down (unless there's clearly no lava left)
You don’t have to wait that long just whip the lava where it’s leaking so when it falls down it doesn’t touch you so u can just drop down in 1 min
@@geezustempest Yeah, you can do that, takes a bit of practice tho. I rather just wait it out and be 100% safe. But I gotta do that more often.
This is sound advice and I usually go at about 2:00 myself, though it wouldn't have done much good as it was a falling magma man that did NL in. Only good defense against that is to practice full drops from the top all the way to the bottom so you spend as little time on the shaft as possible.
I hope they tweak the volcana drill at some point, it's one of the most un-spelunky parts of the game.
@@Vulkans maybe they could make the drill only show up on the bottom half of the level, to minimize the lava it'll sink in. And that'll also reduce the amount of times it spawns on top of a shop or altar 😒
or use the ice gun which works wonderes :)

IMO they really need to change that drill lava situation. And I haven't gotten to Olmec since the patch myself but from what I've seen in videos I really don't think they made it any better.
I'm just here to see NL struggle to dismount turkeys because he has not figured out the down button yet
Also enemy spawns on dailies are different sometimes, thats interesting.

Stun is a weird mechanic in spelunky. You would think a short whip to the body wouldn't stun very much compared to a rock being thrown at your face but hey

I agree with NL about volcana. Descending down the drill chain is so stupid. Almost every death I've had in volcana is from offscreen lava flying down towards me insta killing me. I never go there because of this one reason.

My black market the other day spawned at the top of the jungle. Luckily I had paste, it was literally the highest tile you can think off lol.
happy ghost is seriously easy to dodge when youre not doing it for the first time like NL
I'm just thinking here, on the first floor after you dropped off Monty you could have put the torch near the exit. Then you break the ghost pot and bring the torch to the next level. You would have a throwable and might even have saved yourself a bomb on cooking the turkeys.

What if you used bombs on the floor to make the lava flow differently? Then it wouldn't drip on your head
I think if you shoot Quillback on the top or bottom of the character model the bombs wont explode because they spawn in the middle of the model when he dies, but I have no proof of it, it jsut seems to work for me

I really don't think the fluid physics were a good addition to Spelunky 2. At the very least they should lower the viscosity of the lava to make it less tedious to deal with.
