    For people who don't have a laser cutter and would just like a pre-cut set of leather, Aki Asahi in Japan sells various replacement sets for SX-70s at really reasonable prices. I've re-covered an SX-70 using one of their kits, and it looks great. I have another that I need to cover, and bought another kit from them because it's a lot cheaper than buying a laser cutter. :-)

    The coverings that get that powdery white look are actually NOT leather. They're a vinyl type material that Polaroid called "Porvair". Usually it's a darker brown or black colour. The original SX-70s in including the Alpha Models had real leather. After that, they got really cheap and stopped using real leather.

    I have two SX-70 which seem to work, but the picture doesn't come out. I was told that there is a spring pushing on the picture that may not execute its function because of the thinner paper of modern Polaroid pictures. Do you agree? Moreover, do you know a place where you can have a CLA or fixing in Europe(or Italy, I live in Roma and I am a cinematographer, fond of Polaroid since my father took a SX-70 at home during the seventies-I still have it but it has the prtoblem mentioned above). Thank you.

  • @frankfoti
    @frankfoti 10 місяців тому +1

    The SX-70 loses value when the skin is removed. Unless its in really bad shape do not remove it. If the corners are lose, all you need to do is add a bit of flexible glue. Use a blowdryer get the leather warm, and if peals off extremely easy. The original leather is of very high quality italian leather, nice and thin. The replacements are thick and very cheap, most are not even genuine leather. Good video tho.

    Since my last SX70 Sonar freaked out, i sold it on Ebay with a heavy heart and bought a really devastated another one instead + new leather. This time without a Sonar focus, i tend to think, that the ones with a Sonar focus are more fragile.
    It took so much time, especially because the old leather was so sticky and using "Waschbenzin" ("White spirit") and a sponge, it was only slowly possible to get rid of it.
    And even after this procedure, the SX70 was so sticky and by leaving it on the heating over the night, i could fix this a little bit.
    So, if you anybody else would want to try it out: Just do it, but don't expect it to be easy. :D

    Hello there, hope there is still some activity going on here. I wanted to ask if there is a shop in the EU offering these replacement skins, maybe even with some nicer dark wood? If not, may there be some kind of "manual" or at least some advice on how to create a skin by myself? Is there something special to think about when working with 1mm thick wood? I guess I could also cut it out with a laser cutter (if I find one somewhere), or do you have some other tips regarding cutting out these materials? Would be cool if someone could help me out a little bit.
    Greetings :)

    • @AnalogThings
      @AnalogThings  6 років тому

      Hey, i dont know of any shops in the EU that sell them but there is a view on ebay. In the description below you can find the PDF which is a vector and can be used to lasercut your material. If you are going for wood i would suggest adding doublesided adhesive foil before cutting, makes life alot easier. 1mm is about the max i would go with the strength but you can just test it if the lid of the viewfinder stil closes you are finde.

    Question : probably a terrible idea around these types of cameras . But couldn’t you say use a heat gun to heat up the adhesive glue and make removal easier or is there a reason and that’s just a BIG no for these types of cameras ?

    And if I am really lazy or do not have lasers ... Do you ship ready cut leather on request?

    • @AnalogThings
      @AnalogThings  7 років тому +1

      I had some leather from an old studio, i think every leather with a smooth back and not to thick should work, since you dont need to bend over edges or something like that.
      i dont sell leather but there are some sellers on ebay that provide precut skins for the sx-70 and you should check that out.

    Tolles Tutorial! aber 1. gefällt mir deine wahl des Leder überhaupt nicht. Die Textur ist komplett anders und die Farben Passen auch nicht. die Silberne sieht sehr Unpassend aus. 2. Kann man das Leder nicht auch einfach für 20€ pro set Passend Zugeschnitten und in der Richtigen Farbe auf eBay bekommen?

    How heat sensitive are those cameras?
    I wonder if heating the leather/glue with a heat gun would be a good idea to get rid of the old leather easier.

    • @AnalogThings
      @AnalogThings  7 років тому +2

      I would strongly advise against using a heat gun, there is alot of different materials in the camera, like the below and these materials could be damaged by the high temperature.

    hey! i was wondering what kind of solvent you’re using? i tried to use goo gone for my original sx70 to take off just the gooey residue from the leather (still has the original foil on it, didn’t need to open up the camera) but it didn’t really work. I just kind of scratched it off gently with alcohol. On the black camera i believe some fabric in grey marmor or maybe cork would be stylisch. maybe you find some hemp fabric to put on. :D
