Yeah, I've heard a lot about how World of Warcraft is dying, but apparently (per a site called "MMO Stats") it is still the most popular traditional MMORPG by a long shot, being 4 times as popular as its closest competitors. Final Fantasy XIV is apparently #2 and Guild Wars 2 and RuneScape being very close behind at 3 and 4 respectively.
In regards to the trivia question about the PSP, Zee had mentioned the weird CD format. One thing I'd like to add to his comment is that the games on PSP did fairly well, however one reason the PSP didn't do as well as it should have is due to Sony using a proprietary video format they called UMD. The problem was it forced people to re-buy a movie they may have already had only to be able to watch it on the PSP.
The PSP actually ended up being a pretty good success for Sony... it sold over 80 million units by the end of its run, so it was far from a dud.... the DS just sold almost twice as much. For me, I'll take a PSP over a DS... I just prefer the games the PSP offered. Oh... and if you modded your PSP, it would run tons of fun homebrew stuff and emulators. The PS Vita eventually came along and can run all of the PSP software, otherwise, I'd still keep a PSP with me. Great little system. Now as for those UMD movies... that was folly. ;-) I do own Green Day's Bullet in a Bible on UMD, though. lol (Someone gave it to me as a gift because they knew I loved Green Day.) EDIT: Oh! And a third PS handheld is in the works right now... with the rumor that it will run PS4 games. Count me in!
It is crazy to see the games that came out 20 years ago. I feel your pain Tom and Zee when thinking of the 80's and then remembering how long ago it was. For 2004 games, I don't have a lot of games played, but here are my top 5. 5 - Star Wars Miniatures 4 - Betrayal at House on the Hill 3 - Ticket to Ride 2 - Memoir '44 1 - Heroscape (This is the game that got me really into the hobby)
1 - Antiquity, 2 - Goa, 3 - St. Petersburg, 4 - Power Grid, 5- Maharaja, 6 - Ys, 7 - The Downfall of Pompeii, 8 - San Juan, 9 - Ticket to Ride, 10 - In the Shadow of the Emperor
mine would be similar until you listed Power Grid. I think it would go 1. Antiquity, 2. St. Petersburg, 3 Goa, 4. Jambo, 5. The Downfall of Pompeii, 6.Ticket to Ride, 7. San Juan 8.Ingenious, 9. Tumblin Dice, 10.Power Grid
Zee, I will say regarding the Power Grid maps, a lot of them have different rules. So it's not just "there's 3 back-to-back 19-cost connections! WILD, HUH!?!?", they actually are decently different
I've played around 30 games from 2004. My top are 1) Shikoku 1889, the best intro 18XX game, 2) Cockroach Poker, 3) Power Grid, 4) San Juan, 5) Dungeon Twister, 6) Ticket To Ride, 7) Friedrich, 8) No Thanks, 9) Downfall of Pompeii, 10) Station Master. All good games.
1. Dark Stories 2. Power Grid 3. Memoir '44 4. Goa 5. Carcassonne: The City 6. BuyWord 7. Ticket to Ride 8. Sole Mio! 9. No Thanks! 10. Betrayal at House on the Hill
Just ordered a copy of Lost Valley --- been thinking for years to pickup a copy --- Tom mentioned it around pick 6 or 7? --- I found one and decided to pull the ripcord... 🙂 Thanks for the vid! Very Enjoyable!
There are some similarities to King Up! And Lifeboats. In Lifeboats you collectively move boats with multiple players pieces in them toward islands and along the way leaks spring, people move boats and ultimately you have 3 Captain hats that count as tiebreakers, unless someone else uses one and they cancel each other instead. So some of the same feelings in both games but different modes of play. Probably need to track down a copy.
Shake Shack starts with a diagraph not a blend Tom. Blends are 2 or more letters that each make there own sound. Digraphs are 2 letters that make one sound. SH- is a digraph..
Great list, amusing and fun. I like your live lists, im not usually watching them live though - and it feels like the numbers jingle volume level is a little too high for me (earphones) compared to the guys talking. It gives me the 'tv ad break' vibe somehow 🙉🙉🙉 😅
My number one game of 2004 and it's not even close. The auction for that game still hasn't been beaten yet and the level your stuff up is still popular today. The theme is generic but it's about the same as San Juan.
Haha. Sorry, I wanted to include a bunch of iconic 2004 box cover characters even if they wouldn't make lists to add suspense. Niagara and Goa didn't make the lists either.
Love Blue Moon! I’m grateful to Zee for recommending it so many times. I got the tarot card version. Definitely the better card size.
I´d love to see a Top 10 unpopular opinion regarding boardgames (not just specific games you hate/love and people love/hate)
Someone Reddits

If WoW is dying, then it’s slow cus I’ve been having plenty of fun!
Mike said he loves your Blue Moon pick Zee! I love it too!
Entertaining as always! Love it, and the facts from 20 years ago.

So glad Tumbling Dice is in the list!
Great list! These types of Top 10s were probably some of my favorites from the podcast. Keep it up! Will you do like 15, 10, and 5 years ago as well?
1) Memoir '44. 2) Reef Encounter, 3) Power Grid, 4) Dungeon Twister, 5) Kakerlakenpoker, 6) Blood Bowl: Living Rulebook, 7) Geschenkt (aka No Thanks!), 8) Fairy Tale, 9) Ingenious, and 10) Tumblin' Dice.
Reef Encounter is so good and it's sad it made no one's list
Great show, would like to see more of these.
I enjoy all the trivia!

In the thumbnail the Power Grid guy is giving the Memoir 44 guy a purple nurple.
😆

1. Dark Stories
2. Power Grid
3. Memoir '44
4. Goa
5. Carcassonne: The City
6. BuyWord
7. Ticket to Ride
8. Sole Mio!
9. No Thanks!
10. Betrayal at House on the Hill
Everquest was before WoW and then the Granddaddy was Ultima Online in the late 1990s --- played on Dialup! 🙂 Great Lists!!!!
Dial-up, omg, I just flashed back to AOL’s connection tones!
@@jgregveneklasen2657 Yep! The Good Ol' Days! --- Didn't want someone else in the house to pickup the phone for fear of disconnect! 🙂
So many classics that year
The new TTR app is improving! Their latest update with a more classic view feels a lot better! So its moving in the right direction
Oh Battlestations. Hybrid boardgame space combat and rpgcharacters.such good campaigns. We played it for 14 years. A 2004 gem
Just ordered a copy of Lost Valley --- been thinking for years to pickup a copy --- Tom mentioned it around pick 6 or 7? --- I found one and decided to pull the ripcord... 🙂 Thanks for the vid! Very Enjoyable!
HEROOOOOOOSSSSCCCCAAAAPPPEEEEEE!!!!!!!! Can’t wait to work with the team at Renegade at GenCon for this game 😊
Re Ingenious discussion: Dragonland (2002) also used the same scoring mechanism.

Much easier to find the Mario Level Uo version these days. I still haven't tried Lifeboats but I am curious to. -Chris
@@thedicetowerThe right group makes Lifeboats sing. The stages of votes, and knowing when to use your captain hat has some fun moments baked in.
The most recent year I could do a top 10 of would be 2014 haha. I like a lot of older games. Just haven't played that many.
I wish Jambo would be reprinted. It’s tough to find. Love Power Grid, Ticket to Ride, Memoir’44, Ingenious and No Thanks.

I'd prob put TTR as #1, but I like trains.
With Power Grid in close second, though I haven't played it in a decade.
Someone finds a pirates cove box in thier attic. And is like what is this treasure?
I can't think of Memoir 44 without thinking of Sam Healy
I would mention Betrayal as a flawed classic. Also Saboteur. Both very influential early traitor games.
For me it's gotta be:
1. Blue Moon [Legends]
2. Goa
3. Antiquity
4. Saint Petersburg
5. San Juan
6. YS
7. Reef Encounter
Goa!
How in earth is memoir 44 not on everyone’s list?!
Where is Goa?
Goa was my number 12
Goa is the GOAT. Well, it's very good.
My number one game of 2004 and it's not even close. The auction for that game still hasn't been beaten yet and the level your stuff up is still popular today.
The theme is generic but it's about the same as San Juan.
Euphrat&Tigris? Knizia made some great games with this Einfach Clever/Samurai point system.
Zee have you played Sleeping Gods Distant Skies yet? You equip ability cards by discarding other ability cards from your hand.
Rooster Booster is a brand of energy drink made by QuikTrip a gas station.
Chris says cream of the crop then proceeds to list games no one has heard of lol
Ticket to Ride, Power Grid, Ingenious, No Thanks, San Juan, Tumblin Dice, Mamma Mia 2. You must have been watching a different list to me?
Uh… might you be in your early twenties or late teens? 🤔 (True, Rooster Booster and King Up are new to me, but both got reprinted, so made an impact).
Who got sued?
The base Carcassonne is still the best version of Carcassonne.
The fact that Optimus Prime's head is missing conitinues to bother me.
Pronouncing yahoo like that is crazy
This... is... HEROSCAPE!!!
Why has Carcassonne the City not be reprinted? Is this some publisher BS between Rio Grande and Z-Man?
Wait, 20 years ago was...oh crud.
Zi: You asked "If you saw a picture of Snoop and Martha Stewart, which one would you guess is a felon?" What are you saying there?
Because statistically more younger to middle aged men are felons compared to middle aged / older women? What are you saying there, jerk?
Snoop is an old school gangsta - he usually keeps that persona for most public appearances
Marco Polo sounds like Phase 10
I kept waiting for cockroach poker to get mentioned! It was on the freeze frame 🥲
Haha. Sorry, I wanted to include a bunch of iconic 2004 box cover characters even if they wouldn't make lists to add suspense. Niagara and Goa didn't make the lists either.
