angry birds has been dead for 10 of those 15 years
Its very telling that in Greek mythology, the symbol of trespassing boundaries and uncontroled consumption was the boar of Erimantus.
The same one that's part of the Labors of Hercules?
@@ShankarSivarajan Yep, the very same.
Pigs feature prominently in several Greek myths, including the tale of Circe, where she turned men into literal pigs because she detested them.
Of course. Boars respect nobody.
I've still got the scar on my thigh from the time I was stabbed by the tusk of a hog. I can confirm wholeheartedly that they're some villains.
We are very lucky they never teamed up with the emus. Both are hardier, smarter and more dangerous than humans give them credit for.
@@KaiserAfini Oh, indeed. The Great Australian Emu War is very much evidence of that!
I remember watching and reading about it. They're very resilient.
Some more news reference Cody is a real angry bird
Odysseus, is that you?
How did you get close enough to a hog for it to stab you? I've never seen one in real life, much less gotten close enough to touch one!
Huh, deja vu? I'm reminded of the hogs in history episode
I mean I'm glad to see an expanded version. The pig ep is one of my favourite.
My first thoughts exactly too the moment I saw the thumbnail
Hahahahahaha!
Did Cody write this episode?? Warmbo?!
Yup, the one with the collab with TierZoo.
The cat saying "all beings are but meet for my eternal feast". If that's not turned into a t-shirt you are missing an opportunity.
Oh no. Cody was right! The boars are taking over!
Some more news reference Cody is a real angry Bird
You should never have doubted him, lol
People are finally waking up!
Came to make the obligatory Cody Johnston reference, myself.
Here for the Cody. Stayed for the History.
I'm Austrian. Considering to which absolutely ridiculous lenghts our ancestors went to exterminate the local population of wolves with their 19th century tech, I'm sure all of those wild pig related issues are less a question of "can't" and more a question of "don't want" or "can't afford".
The wolf destruction was "completed" over the 1800s in most northern countries due to advancements in firearms. Reintroducing wolves would massively cut down on wild pigs but no politician will do it, as eventually a human, likely a child, will be taken by a wolfpack and renew calls for extermination again.
sadly, wolves are easier to eliminate due to their lower birth rate.
3:08 I'm glad Cody Showdy gets to be represented in the EH art style
It's only fair (and balanced (™©®))
CODY SHOWDY REPRESENT!
I live in Genoa in Liguria (Italy) and I first saw how wild boars took to the city after the pandemic, and I had a couple of close encounters with wild boars.
That's right we forgot about the wildlife coming into the citys during the pandemic. Be careful around them!
and I know it very well, once I had a "very close" encounter with a wild boar (perhaps a male), while I was coming home from work it was on my path, I took a tuft of grass to distract it (I know you shouldn't give them to eat. but they don't say that you can use a "natural food" to save your thighs). after taking some grass, I found him around the corner (in the true sense of the word). luckily for me, he liked the "bunch of grass" and I walked like a shrimp (with my eyes on him), so as not to have any nasty surprises from him! for me so far, I have had no attacks. (except for the cow on the farm where I work: non-lethal or serious injuries)
@@extrahistory In fact the pandemic can be blamed for some of the recent incursions of wild boars in the outskirts of cities both in Italy and Spain (lots of cases in my native Galicia as well), as packs of them moved from the countryside to city's suburbs at that time looking for food, and have become semi-permanent residents of those areas since then.
Another issue to blame boars of, btw, is an increase in car accidents whenever they reside, mainly at night. It's no fun crashing into a big boar, even with a proper car!
In Texas wild pigs are classified as a feral invasive species. They can be hunted year-round with no limit. There are people who keep packs of dogs just to hunt pigs. The dogs come in two types, curs and pits. Curs are long legged hounds with good noses similar to a foxhound. Pits are sturdier slower dogs that will try to corner a group of pigs so they can be easily shot.
@@germanomagnonefun fact all boars are male pigs females are called sows
3:43 female wild boar, to be precise (and originally written "jabalina"); weird enough (well, not so), it's the same word usen for "javelin", that spear that's used as a throw implement in track-and-field along with the hammer and the shot.
Another reason not to feed wild pigs and boars is that doing so encourages them to come back with reinforcements, and they are very dangerous (not only are they lumps of pure muscle with the temper of a hurricane, if you have the bad luck to very intimately meet one that's trying to cross the road, chances are high your vehicle is now scrap, and pray that you haven't been hurt or worse).
Um, the pigs were named after the spear because of the sharp bristles on their backs, btw. So, it's not a coincidence that the same word is used. It's also why another slang word for wild hogs is "razorback" (which is used as the mascot for the University of Arkansas).
I have a note about pig terminology:
Male pigs in general are called Boars.
Castrated male pigs are called barrows
Young female pigs before having a litter of piglets is called a Glit
An adult female pig who has given birth to at least one litter, is called a Sow
This is the terminology I found after a very quick google search. So if I got any thing wrong. Please contact me.
Some simple subjects are perfect for a quick Google search. Just not things like politics, history etc.
Nah, I'm just gonna call them cops.
Yes you are correct . By the way I grew up on a hog farm and showed swine in 4H for ten years.
@@rustomkanishka One could argue that's an insult to the animal.
In Belgium i know that wild boars are a troublesome subject. It's a local animal with some cultural significance and which is often hunted for food like dried sausage. But they wreck havoc on crop fields and it's know that some hunter feed them (which is illegal) with the puropose of encouraging them reproducing and making them tamer so they're easier to hunt. We've been trying for years to reintroduce wolves in the country but some farmers and hunter see them as a threat for their buisness.
Let's not pretend that the reintroduction of an animal that historically has been the enemy of pastoral communities for literal centuries to the point that folk tales and Nursery rhymes make use of it as a metaphor for evil that must be destroyed would fare any better in recent times....
While not exactly related, if they wanted to hunt them they should just use Judas Pigs.
With mixed results this was tried for a bit in the 90s/00s in Australia. Basically you fit a regular pig with some radio equipment and it will go find where the boars are.
Its based on a similar principle to Judas Goats in controlling feral goats (not to be confused with Judas Goats in shepparding).
There are risks, you need to know that the boar density is pretty high... otherwise you are just adding to the population and the pigs don't always find a group.
Unfortunately in SW WA we had a problem with wild deer that were released in the 19th century. Hunting Permits (strictly for deer and feral pigs) in state forests were eventually handed out like there was no tomorrow to get rid of them. But when the deer problem was fixed, some d*ckheads decided to release more deer into the forests just to hunt wild deer.

I love the reference to Some Boar News 😂
Bad piggies. Brings back so many memories
When’s Extra Biology?
I was a history major in college and this video makes me think of when I learned about “big history” where, instead of studying humanity the focus is on powerful factors such as disease, geography, weather, and other non-human forces and how they shape history. Would anyone else love to see Extra History make more focused on this kind of history?
Hell yeah! CGP Grey has an interesting video on the civilizational impact of the availability of domesticable animals in the world, for instance.
1:29-1:44 One of the reasons I am liking these episodes that are sponsored by Rovio are these moments right here.
First Matt gets launched out of a slingshot twice, and now this.

@@jiyuhong5853 In the videos about Hawaii’s Avian Apocalypse and how the Dodo met its end.
In Brazil, things are literally going wild with pigs.
We have here three species of wild pigs: The Peccary the Tayasu (also know here as "Queixada"), and the Wild Boar, introduced here by the europeans. The Wild Boar, and sometimes even the Tayasu breed with domestic pigs.
As this wasn't bad enough, the actual government is trying to restrict firearms access for the civilians, making species control even more difficult.
This is misleading:
As you might know, you CAN get a firearm license for hunting in Brasil, and one of the only species of animal that can be considered for hunting are the invasive ones such as the Wild Boar. Prospective "hunters" have been introducing Wild Boars to regions where they previously hadn't been present so that they can acquire such a license, destroying the environment and endangering native species in the process.
...
An article written in the Ciência UFPR e-magazine last year highlights this issue, just search for:
"O dilema dos javalis: da transmissão de doenças ao estímulo da caça ilegal"
You can also search for the scientific article on which the magazine based theirs on:
"One Health at gunpoint: Impact of wild boars as exotic species in Brazil - A review"
Guess Brazil needs a proper animal control policy instead of handing civillians AKs
No this is wrong. Pecarries are not pigs at all, and they have never been able to be properly domesticated.
They can't breed like pigs either and their flesh tastes far worse, which is why in Brazil notably, the Jaguars there have been observed to actually prefer to hunt and eat feral pigs over the native pecarries.
im sick today witha particularly nasty cold, and seeing an off-schedule upload has made my day! thanks!

Love the shoutout to Some More News. They go over the top sometimes, but they bring important issues to the forefront.
I was excited to see "Some Boar News" getting a mention.

This turned out to be an incredible watch! One of my books actually has a wild pig hunt as one of conflicts, so this was REALLY informative!
Glad to see Cody getting a shout out over this topic.
You captured Cody's disheveledness quite well!
Literally just watched the new Some More News episode so the Cody reference really hit me from left field
I didn't expect a shout out at 3:08 to the Cody Showdy over at Some More News, but I was pleased to see it :D
Always love seeing reference to other creators. Not surprised there's some crossover here.
This happened in South America too. A lot of wild boars were imported from Europe to be used as exotic food in Uruguay, but they ended up free. Now they are competing with native Tayassuidae boars and causing chaos in Uruguay, Argentina, and southern Brazil.
Transition from Bad piggies theme to Extra History credits music is the best thing I have heard in the while

That little bad piggies reference was beyond funny.
If you guys need help dealing with feral pigs, just introduce the cane toad.
Its called the Australian Swine Solution.
oh damn i didnt know that! this is pretty cool, thanks EH!
Boars are also a big problem in middle/western europe like germany or austria. They used to bring through 3-4 young boars, but thanks to warmer climate during winter in the recent 20-30 years, they often manage to bring through their whole litter of up to 10.
Hunters here basically doing overtime to keep the populations somewhat manageable and we got lots more boar meat in restaurants, as a side effect.

O.o Okay now I'm rethinking about adopting another cat.
Yeah, unfortunately, unless you can stomach the idea of having a strictly indoor cat, it's probably best not to get one at all.
That said, I might suggest adopting a senior kitty, as they're a lot more likely to be fine just being inside cats.

I love how you made a bad piggies reference
I remember reading in a homesteaders guide if you want to get rid of woods on your property after cutting down the trees you first allow goats to graze there, then send in the pigs. The goats will eat saplings down to the roots, and pigs will root them up.
Ayyy I was going to say wild pigs have been a growing problem in Alberta! Happy so see you guys mention it

Loved the Bad Piggies reference
Didn’t you already do an episode on this?
AH HAA! As soon as I saw the title Cody's manic screams were already playing.. "New Boarld Order!!"
Great vid as always guys!!! Just a quick correction however,
Peccaries are not actually technically a true pig. And Feral hogs have gotten practically all over the US. From California to Carolina, and some isolated populations in the northern states. Most are animals gone feral, however, some regions have had Russian wild boar introduced as game animals. and they've interbred with the feral population.
Love the idea of a fox going into a hen house to steal the eggs 😅
Very informative! Do "Outdoor" Cats next.
"Some More News" call out!!! Awesomeness
Please do the Greek war of independence of 1821 against the ottoman empire next
I've been asking for this since the first episodes of the sengoku Jidai!
My dad used to work in a veterinary lab (developing vaccines for farm animals), as part of the job they would keep flocks of animals on hand for testing, mostly sheep, but often pigs and other animals. He likes animals and never had any issues in handling any of them. The one exception to this was the pigs, there was always something creepy about them. They still make him uneasy to this day (he puts it down to childhood trauma).
A Some More News reference in Extra History! OMG!!
I love how you tip your hat to other creators in YT world. You R the most wholesome people.
The Australians learned it the embarassing way, that you cannot hunt species that reproduce quick.
Michael Hoggett? Ironically fitting name for a patron on an episode about pigs.

I live by a simple rule. Pig shows up on my property. It ends up in my freezer.😂
I really miss the South America history series. It would be great to see a video about José de San Martín's life.
Hey! Can you include George V of Great Britain in the Worst Dads in History series? It was said he was rough on his sons in his private life (even though I know little of him).

Wild javelinas are a big issue here in Phoenix, AZ.. My mom lives on the periphery of the city and they ransack her trash almost every week
5:53 so why did that happen.. like what are all the details of that event?
I was actually there for that. I was visiting one of the small hike-able mountains. And before we even crossed the road to get to the starting point there was this massive furry pig with tusk and I was. "Is that a wild pig? Huh, I thought most of the wildlife would avoid cities." **takes a picture, than crosses the road, than sees a mama boar with a train of piglets behind her.** Super cute, and every other hiker nearby was like standing still as they just walked past us without any fuss. And duh, you don't mess with wild pigs. And than I after I searched the web to learn more.... I realized it was just the tip of the pigs-berg...
Based on the name of the episode, I suspected that this was going to give a shoutout to Some More News and I was not disappointed! Pigs are so interesting and it's fun to learn about how terrible they can be and how they've shaped history.
