    Nice! I train BJJ...and this all stuff we'd do in a self-defence application. I notice some use of BJJ terminology in places. i guess all martial arts influence each other. Of course, original Okinawan karate had (has?) a lot of takedowns and grappling in it so it is good to see people starting to reclaim some of that. I guess it has always been there but sport applications of karate have obscured that somewhat.
    The short section of sparring at the end looks just like a BJJ "roll" with strikes added. Nice!

      Thanks! You're absolutely correct, we feel like all traditional arts had a more complete approach to combat that included takedowns and grappling concepts. But much of it has been lost for a while now. We haven't really demoed karate sparring on the ground yet so that short section at the end is kind of a preview of it haha, thanks again for the support and thanks for taking a look at our video!

    You guys should know, you inspired me to track down and join the only Okinawan Karate school in my state (to the best of my knowledge). Everyone there were excellent examples of Bushido!

    Great video, is super weird to see a video like this because there isn't much floor-work on Karate, so this is was really interesting to watch!

      Glad you enjoyed it! We've been meaning to show karate sparring on the ground but haven't gotten around to it. We truly believe it's all transferable, the tegumi on the feet is the same when you rotate everything 90 degrees and are on the ground, thanks!

    Yay! Its here :D ! Thank you, for this. I see so many videos, where when it goes to the ground, the defender just completely gives up striking! 'Gets annoying (shakes head) -_-. 'Hope, to see more, sometime :) .
    Another topic suggestion, would be, "How to defend against kicks/strikes, from the rear (standing, and not). Its another thing that I see, in the online MA community covered sparsely, if at all ! Thanks, again, guys :) .

    Btw, do you feel, like you're getting good striking power, from down there? I mean, I don't expect that it'll be the same as standing, but you get what I mean, right? Do I wanna keep the bottoms of my feet down, to get good power from the non-dominant position (combined with hips)?

    • @karateculture
      @karateculture  7 років тому +2

      There's a difference between power generation to knock someone out(or back) versus power generation to cause a reaction. The best thing to do is work on that push/pull motion since, as you said, you won't have your feet to push off of. The transfer from the the feet to the hips to shoulders and then fist don't really work when you body is misaligned on the ground. So striking is really about cause a reaction and making your attacker lose his balance, or twist his body as a pain response to the strike compared to trying to deal a concussive blow. There's also precision strikes that can cause more damage and don't require as much power

    I know it can be hard to do but I thought something like this was needed in mma etc.

      but they don't allow certain strikes or locks.. mmf.

      definitely the rule set reduces the variety of techniques you're allowed to do on the ground, thanks for the comment!

      looks like melbourne has a goju ryu kenkyukai school, anything with taira masaji is worth checking out. also if you check on our Global network, there's Panda Goju Ryu. We don't know them personally but they're worth a shot. good luck!
