Great! I am also fond of taking failed units apart!

Great content.I know very little about cars, but own an xtype 2.2 diesel that has just gone into limp mode. From what I can gather, while there are many reasons this can happen, a faulty egr valve is one. The old girl is from 2009, so probably an original part. I popped it into the mechanic after watching a few of your tutorials. Thank for sharing.👍

I think that there is also a sensor inside the plastic bit which tells the computer how far open the valve is by sensing the height of the protruding rod.

There are five connections on the back of the plastic plate that correspond with the five terminals, two in the middle that you pointed at, two at the other end and one through the central spindle.

There will be a position sensor in the black cap I would think which is why you have more pins in the connector.

The four wires are used because it is a 'stepper' motor. It can open as much as required by the stepper motor controller, as opposed to fully open and then limited by some sort of limit switch this would be the case of a conventional motor. The spring is to return it to its 'start' or closed position once the power to the motor is cut.

That's really interesting Adam. I shouldn't worry about £50 for an EGR valve. Just spent £80 on a piece of pipe for the EGR on my Renault Diesel and it was £80 for what looks like a piece of brake line. Is the Jag OK now Adam

Can you not just blank it off, i had mitsubishi 3.2 lack of power got told from the dealers new fuel pump required, price £3000 can't put second hand one on as they are coded to the car so car off road, good old internet and mitsubishi forum guy from south africa told me to blank off EGR so a £3.37 kit bought from ebay fitted car went better than it did when i bought it

Call them tiny Torx screws?! You need to try replacing a smartphone battery! Twenty five screws the size of a bit of grit! - Young 'uns these days, don't know they're born!
All those wires? Probably some sort of position sensor and/or travel limit sensor?
Not really something I can say much about. My kid brother was the garage mechanic in the family, but that was many moons ago.
