It's a beautiful production, but the real weakness is Lauren Flanigan (Abigaille), her voice is too thin and unstable for this formidable role. She is just impossible to hear after Suliotis, Dimitrova, Guleghina - Flanigan just doesn't have the range required. Renato Bruson here is also a shadow of his glory, although enjoyable. Maurizio Frusoni is visibly straining. Carlo Colombara is passable. Conducting is undistinguished. It is an interesting performance for Bruson fans (like myself), but overall yields in vocal quality to either one with Gobbi/Suliotis, Cappuccilli/Dimitrova or DVD with Juan Pons/Maria Guleghina. Certainly attending this performance in person in the gorgeous Teatro San Carlo would give a different impression, like any live performance.

«Набу́кко», или «Навуходоно́сор» (итал. Nabucco) - опера Джузеппе Верди в 4 действиях, 7 картинах на либретто Т. Солера, основанная на событиях, описанных в Библии. (Набукко - сокращённая итальянская интерпретация имени царя Навуходоносора II). Именно эта опера, третья в творчестве Верди, принесла ему настоящую славу. В ней повествуется о бедствиях евреев, об их пленении вавилонянами, а затем отпущении на родину царём Вавилона Навуходоносором.
Премьера состоялась 9 марта 1842 года в театре «Ла Скала» в Милане. Первая постановка окончательной версии прошла в Театро Сан-Джакомо на Корфу в сентябре 1844.
В состав оперы входит знаменитый «хор евреев» Va, pensiero, sull’ali dorate - «Лети, мысль, на золотых крыльях».

Lauren Flanigan se donne à fond sans les vrais moyens de son rôle: on comprend pourquoi elle a fait une carrière aussi météorique. Quant à Bruson, même vieillissant, il reste grand ! Il délivre une leçon de chant et d'art dramatique.

I think Flannigan is wonderful. What a pleasant change from the so-called dramatic sopranos trying to manage the runs and high note pianissimos that this role sometimes requires, with varying degrees of success.
Bruson l'unico Nabucco perfetto e credibile, anche se qua ormai comincia a disturbare quel vibrato nella sua bella voce. Interessante anche Abigaille cantante poco nota.

Very good indeed. Laurin Flaningan and Renato Bruson inhabit their roles. Colombara excellent. Bacelli very good. Chorus and orchestra first class. So different form the annoying modern stages that tell nothing about the true story.

It's So difficult for me to enjoy a Nabucco's performance after the Tito's Gobbi and Elena's Souliotis one, some years ago.. Unforgetable...
Indeed Tito Gobbi is just an extraordinary Nabucco, vile, vainglorious and then desperate - his artistry is unmatched. While Elena Suliotis is beyond imagination, stunning! There are a few other great Abigailles - Ghena Dimitrova, Maria Guleghina, Ludmyla Monastyrska. Here Abigaille is rather weak compared to those great divas. Ismaele is also mediocre. This production is truly for Renato Bruson, otherwise... not impressive vocally.
@@cameragiocosa6899 Indeed the Abigaille is rather disappointing vocally, she simply is not equipped to pull off this part. It’s not written for her voice. But it’s such a beautiful production that I still enjoy watching it.
@@cameragiocosa6899The greatest Abigaile is without a doubt Maria Callas, the only one who gave true meaning to the role and perfect execution of all the vocal demands. The ones you mentioned were good with their big uncontrollable voices but that's about it. Callas' Abigaile is UNTOUCHABLE.
@@CallasCarey Yes, Callas was sensational but the only recording that exists is of a poor quality. These others I mentioned are in the same league, however. Callas was unique but she was not the only singer who could do it well. Each of a great artists brings her own, it's not a sports competition.
