The maker of legendary Metal Slug 😂😂😂😂. I remember saw this one when i was a teenager, looks like metal slug product, get the name Irem, get Irem list games and whoaa, i finally find my game 😂😂😂😂😂
I knew this was an IREM game as soon as I've seen those wonderfully detailed backgrounds with dithering. I bet it's from the same group of programmers and artists that later founded NAZCA and created the Metal Slug series.
(Edit upon thinking about it more it might be the same Nazca artist). It's weird that there's no staff roll for Blade Master or even it's Japanese release Cross Blades anywhere in the game and i can't find credits on any flyers or anything either.
Yeah, if this game had had something more like _Weapon Lord_ , which incidentally was a fighting game with several different kinds of attacks and counters, then this could've been something else. It's games like this that make me feel bad the most, because they have _so much_ potential in them and what they do have isn't bad at all, they just needed to be fleshed out a little bit more and they're SO close!
@@kibegamimultimedia There're different kinds of power ups other than an attack that damage all enemies on screen, projectiles and different weapons. They could have done something like an item that gives temporary invincibility to your character or another one that rises your character's attack level for a time, and even better if you can save those items to use them later(a la the PC Engine version of Valis 2) and the list goes on. Considering this, maybe they didn't feel it would fall too much into Golden Axe or Magic Sword, they either weren't creative enough to add more variety to the gameplay or the game was rushed.
Blade Master came out the same year as Capcom's The King of Dragons. The King of Dragons is definitely better for different reasons but yeah Blade Master really needed like a magic powerup system or weapon upgrades or something. I still really like it, my biggest gripe is that the last two stages are basically the same.
SSSURE !! I was immediately hypnotised by the sprite work for every section of the tentacles ! IT seems to be pure madness on both animation and programming levels. Too bad the boss also seems to be a bit dull though. ... Like the whole game actually, to be honest.
Moral of the story: When you see a jockstrapped barbarian weilding an axe-mace-spear flying at you on the back of some kind of bloated dragonfly, GET OUT THE WAY!
Blade Master has a counter attack system. If you attack and your weapon clashes with the enemy's weapon as they're attacking, you'll counter the enemy's attack, stagger them and then you can do a strong counterattack which usually knocks the enemy down. The counter attack works against the gorgon's (snake boss') energy balls. The tough thing about fighting them is they have a grab attack with their tail if they get very close to you that takes off like half your health, so they're much easier when using the Arnold playable character with the long spear rather than the Roy guy with the double swords.
Never heard of this game before, it really does have a Golden Axe vibe. It's even similar to those Dungeon and Dragon arcade games. I will say that the playable characters seem a little underwhelming and lack something - they seem to be a generic archetype of a lot of other characters. That being said, they do work for what they are intended for. They should have added more characters to it, considering this game came out in 1991, the technology was there for that. I did like the bosses but I didn't think they felt all to dangerous. Overall it does look like a lot of fun. It looks like they never made a sequel to this game, pity.
Agreed. Biggest thing I think it's missing -- I notice the stages (even for a beat'em'up) cover very little ground, all look fairly similar, nor give much sense of progression. Then there's the gameplay, which seems bland and simplistic, even when compared to similar titles in 1991. Great points though... I'd love to see this one fleshed-out more too.
@@ichoffski4707 They just didn't plan for it, they could have gotten 2 more characters done in the same time but it was just never the plan and the game came out good but a little lackluster.
lol Roy (the guy with the double swords) is the love-interest of Emina (the girl you rescue) while Arnold is her brother. I actually uploaded the game's story intro on my channel here ua-cam.com/video/bgEW2CN8W-M/v-deo.html
Naga Twins are awesome. Arnold rear-arming a garuda spear, countering with a lead upper flail, too fuckin' cool. Roy in a red croptop with nipples out, not sexy.
In this game the character does not have chains of blows, he always does the same animation, for example final fight if he has chains of blows, Cody first punches, then a low punch and then a hook, that does not happen in this game.
Instead of combos, you have a counter-attack. If you hit attack as an enemy is about to strike, you'll counter the blow, which might knock them down, or shatter their shield.
Yep, the combat (no magic though) is very similar to Capcom's The King of Dragons but with a counter-attack system, and both games coincidentally came out within a month of each other (Aug. 1991 vs July 1991). It's unfortunate Blade Master doesn't have any kind of magic system or weapon upgrade system, something The King of Dragons excelled at. @@AL82RetrogamingLongplays
You have to beat the tentacles so they don't grab you, and not stand too close to the boss. You have to hack off after a couple of hits, else it squirts you with ink.
The game had many things going for it, great pixel art and animations, good music, good gameplay. But the bosses are all pathetic, the difficult level in general feels like its in Very Easy.
You know this is a TAS playthrough using save states right? lol. Blade Master is super tough to 1CC, bosses do massive damage and enemies can easily swarm you in huge numbers and some of their attacks have ridiculous hit ranges. The stage 1, 4 and 5 bosses are basically free once you know what to do but the rest of the bosses can kill you quickly if you mess up a counterattack.
Those giant knights are all kinds of cheap, as well as the final boss. Then again, Irem doesn't know the meaning of the word "easy" in their games. Still, poking at fire breathing turkeys is pretty fun
That's weird... there still are arcade games I did never see in my life.
Thank you Internet.
Same..and new ones are still being made.

Even the soundtrack sounds a lot like Hiya!'s known works.
Wow, never seen this one before. Always good to see something new.
Another awesome blast from the past. Thanks for this wonderful long-play.
Another gem from the arcade golden age.
OMG I finally found the game I used to play when I was a kid! Thanks for the upload!!!
Thanks for bringing this game to my attention. It was fun to play trough it.
Absolutely sumptuous pixel art
Looks like an awesome game. Love the music too.
Another little gem. Thank you
Looks really nice, especially boss characters.
nice end boss!
Those assets...

yep, spam one only one attack until the game end is boring as fuck, not even the good sprite work save it
astounding content AL82 Retrogaming Longplays. I broke that thumbs up on your video. Always keep up the excellent work.
If this game had magic powerups and different weapons it would have rocked.
Never seen this game before but if they merged the altered beast concept with this it would be beautiful.
I guess they felt it would fall too much into Golden Axe or Magic Sword for that fact but, yeah, that would be a neat implementation.

Blade master:
Uses a spear the whole game.
The spearhead is a blade.........
... and mace from time to time.

idk why, but the color dithering style in this one gives me amiga vibes. looks like Team 17 or Bitmap brothers games.
Roy and Arnold are some very legit names for fantasy heroes.
I've seen this game on my youtube page by chance and I tried it..It's a cool game for those playing 90's beat them up games..
Oh this is dope!
This has the vibe of a Frazetta artbook turned into an arcade brawler lmao
Even the stage names are certified pulp cheese 🧀
I lost a lot of my pocket money on this game. Right after school.
How the time flies.
someone give this man some water he's been asking for it the whole game
Having the hero in blade master not use a blade was a bold design choice.

I think the giant insects were rather designed after cicadas. 😉

Looks very Nice
Buff McBigbody! Strong McLargehuge! Beef McBenchpress! Chunk McBiceps! Muscles McLongstretch!
I'm surprised how satisfactory those chained balls behave. They had more power in 1991 than current physics considerations.
Didn't know this game, quite interesting
This gem needs a remake
Not gonna lie that preview got me here
Gorgeous game 😮❤❤
The final boss stage, that explains why Enima's zodiac sign is Gemini. Lol
Art is so much better with limitations. Wow.
Thank you for this. I now know how to defeat the end boss. That was my biggest problem.
Stage 4 theme is a banger
Great!
on the last boss, how do you defend yourself from the energy balls attack?
Blade Master has a counter attack system. If you attack and your weapon clashes with the enemy's weapon as they're attacking, you'll counter the enemy's attack, stagger them and then you can do a strong counterattack which usually knocks the enemy down. They're like 2d sprite versions of the giant armored Demon's Souls/Dark Souls bosses

I see what you did there
they should have called the other character 'Sly'

The last boss is very good looking.
Very femene. 😉
the character has the body of hulk and the head of bruce banner,
that's the perfect mix of 💪 🧠
Very disturbing last boss, I never see this game before, have some HR Giger elements
Look Jimmy, the first GOD OF WAR
