Interesting how she was dropped from a height by Schreck, Batman, and Penguin. It is no wonder her scream of frustration shattered all the remaining glass in the greenhouse.
Burgess Meredith who played Penguin in the 66 tv series was supposed to play Penguin’s dad for this movie but couldn’t due to health issues so Paul got the role.
Christopher Walken was also really good as the bad guy in the Bond movie A View to a Kill....I await a time when I'm looking at a good view and somebody says "what a view!" so I can say "to a kill! [evil laugh]" 🙂

It holds a nostalgic place in my heart. It is in point of fact my 8th favorite Tim Burton film ever. 28:51 My response to this particular quote is… “Tell me about it, I thought this only happened in Bugs Bunny cartoons.” Danny DeVito as The Penguin is next to Heath Ledger as The Joker my favorite performance of a Batman villain.

This is the first Batman movie I've seen. I was too young, but my dad was a huge Bat fan. It also introduced me to Christopher Walken, who was a big crush in this movie. Again, I was TOO young to see this. 😅
I was OBSESSED with this movie as a kid! I had the trading cards, posters, shirts.. Everything from the opening scene, to the theme etc etc just makes me smile. ❤
Glad you & others loved it, & is all that matters, but being born in '71, raised on the comics, the original tv show reruns, & cartoons, i was hugely disappointed in all the sequels to Batman '89, which i liked. I dont remember a thing about them. Id like to one day revisit them as im open-minded as can be, but mainly boiled down to all that A-List fire-power that ended up boring me to tears! I'm sure i would've enjoyed it more if they used unknown actors & wasn't expecting so much! I've always thought that when penguin says "i was their number one son and they treated me like number 2" that it was a play on words. Number two son and number two as in bowel movement. Always loved this movie so much. Have a Happy New Year.
This was one of my favorite films growing up (still is)...and it was great to know that someone else would watch this film but fast forward through the opening credits too lol
Now I am curious of your thoughts of The Flash movie. I always loved Burton's universe. I love the old timey aspects of it, the fedoras, the old cars. It made Batman's gadgets more impressive, they're not so impressive as modern age tech. This is one thing that carried over into the Animated Series which is what truly got me to fall in love with the character.
Great reaction, Ames!!! You're the best!!! ❤🥰🌹 I heard Danny DeVito tell a funny story about when they made this film. His wife, Rhea Perlman, brought his son and daughter to the set to visit him one day. They were pretty young, and they were terrified of the Penguin, not realizing it was Daddy in a costume and makeup. Danny DeVito had to switch to his normal voice so the kids knew it was really Daddy. Then they loved the whole thing!!! 😊
Live in the burbs and work in the city (Chicago), and have spent the better part of 2 decades living, working and wandering this city. Every time I’m over by Tribune Tower I go behind the 401 N. Michigan building, between there and NBC Tower, and look at the building view. It’s one of the spots in the city where when you stare up it instantly hits you … wow, this IS Gotham. Then head down the stairs to lower Michigan and you see the seedy underbelly of Gotham, I totally expect to see the Batmobile screaming down lower Wacker, across the bridge while chasing some baddie. There’s 4 or 5 spots like that where you’re just instantly hit by this creepy GOTHAM!!! feeling.
Saw it as a 12-Year in the Cinema and it was life-changing Experience. Obsessed with Batman since and Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman is maybe the greatest Performance in any Comic-Book-Movie. Tim Burton's Masterpiece for sure. Yeah it's different to the Comics, but the Worldbuilding and Characters are fitting perfect to the Burton-Style.
You’ve got the right look, hair, and eyes for an old school Batman (TV show) Catwoman. I believe there were two different actresses that played Catwoman back then, and I remember they were both, prrretty much purrrrfect in that role. Movies to watch if you haven’t seen them... 3 more from 1989... The Burbs Dead Calm Uncle Buck 3 more Michael Keaton... Johnny Dangerously Night Shift Pacific Heights 3 more Danny DeVito... L.A. Confidential Throw Mama From The Train Twins 3 more Walken Antz The Dead Zone Puss In Boots (1988) (it’s live action, not animated, and it’s also the most enjoyably fun movie that I recommend, that no one seems to know about. Maybe I’m the only one that likes it.) 3 more Michelle Pfeiffer... Dangerous Liaisons Scarface The Witches Of Eastwick Thanks for making videos eh. P. S. I think the reason Penguin was so irresistibly drawn to Catwoman was... she ate a lot of tuna fish. Mmmm... tuna breath.
I approve. I used to have the cardboard display from the cinema for this in my apartment. And yes, I got a bullwhip and learned to use it because of watching Pfeiffer swing it at the security guards. And it is hard, yep. If anything it is an example of going the distance. And all the gripes from fandom's now neglect how beloved this was in it's day and how inspirational it was long after. A lot of cues from this became codified in the franchise forever more. I did bother picking up DeVito's comic book "Gotham City Villains". In it he returns to the character and wrote sort of an alternate future for the character and Selina, one that showed a lot of love for the character he original crafted. And speaking of people who put their all into their work. Keaton is an actor I can always watch for his performance but Multiplicity I? Meh. Story I mean. A friend found the meaning of life in that movie and insisted I had to see it. He was fun but I could take or leave the rest of it.
Fun facts: Max Shrek was supposed to become Two-Face if Tim Burton got to carry on with the franchise, but he knew he wasn’t going to keep making Batman movies, so he just killed him off. Also, Michelle Pfeiffer had to be sewn into her Catwoman costume, so you really don’t want to try that as your halloween costume. Makes bathroom visits difficult. I think she also got close to dehydration/heat stroke in it because it didn’t breathe. But she did get proficient enough with the whip to have decapitated all those mannequins in one take.
@@holddowna I feel dumb when I comment early in the videos only for it to be addressed later. Also, I think that news boy in the beginning was the guy that played Roach in The People Under The Stairs. He’s also a McPoyle on Always Sunny. At first I thought it was Liebgott from Band of Brothers. But the guy who plays Christopher Walkin’s son also played Leatherface in Texas Chainsaw. If you’ve never watched Hudson Hawk with Bruce Willis (which is a slapstick comedy) that guy also plays a big dope code named Butterfinger.
I'm a visuals guy (art director) and Batman Returns has some of the best production design I've seen in modern movies. The whole gothic/art deco inspired look of the film. Batman's new sleek suit (inspired by 1930s/40s automotive designs) and Penguin's makeup... all stellar. It's such a visually stunning and polished movie.
This and T2 were the first two movies I remember being so hyped for before long before they were actually released. I had the first movie of each franchise on VHS (when I was way too young to own them) so when I heard there were sequels coming I was ready. Everything about Batman Returns just looked so cool, the set design is amazing, the cast is great and it has the perfect balance between camp and the dark realism of the later Nolan movies. It's still my favourite Batman movie because it's just fun.
Yes! What I realized watching it again (it’s been a long time) is that the penguin is actually soo hilarious and has just as many great one liners as catwoman! I used to ffw to all of her scenes because I was obsessed! There is something special about it. I haven’t seen T2 since I was little I cannot wait to rewatch it as an adult!
@@holddowna T2 is one of the greatest sci-fi movies of all time so you'll no doubt love it. The weird thing is I also had it on VHS which I watched over and over again. It wasn't until nearly 20 years later that I realised there was an extended cut, which I think has now become the standard version. I actually think it adds so much more to the movie, I'm pissed I never got to see it until so much later.
They just did it right with this one. The casting was perfect. The writing was inspired and seemed tailor-made for the people performing. The visuals, from costumes and props to sets and lighting, seemed to be pulled directly from Tim Burton's brain, which says a lot for the communication and respect that each group responsible had for each other. It's dark, but with just the right mix of humor to keep from feeling too heavy. e: Not only was the "bird in the mouth" shot real, it was done in a single take.
This movie tanked Sean Young's carreer. She wanted the Catwoman role badly, and went a little nuts. She appeared on talk shows dressed in home made costumes, sent several videos to Tim Burton, .It bordered on harassment.
Oh man! I didn’t know who that was! Ppl just need to say “finkle is einhorn” cause I haven’t seen seen dune or Blade runner lol sad… but I still think they got catwoman right
She was originally cast as Vicki in the first Batman but got injured rehearsing for a scene that ended up being cut from the movie. After she got replaced and the first film became a HUGE success, she felt slighted she wasn't even given a chance to audition for the sequel so she went on her talk tour as the OP said haha.
I like Tim Burton's style, but I wonder where Johnny Depp is in this one. Probably before their business relationship 😛. What Tim did here was merge Christmas with a gothic Halloween feeling but the Halloween elements aren't obvious. It also works for me because in victorian England Christmas was a time to tell scary stories, like Halloween.
I have that iconic Catwoman poster framed on my wall as well 👌 She is a total queen, pretty sure Catwoman was one of my first crushes. Also, you’re right, Michelle Pfeiffer had to be stitched into the costume every time she had to wear it.
My favourite Batman movie hands down. Christopher Walken has been my favourite actor for many years. And yes, Michelle Pfieffer did actually put a live bird in her mouth!
Walken is so good at playing diabolical that his corrupt businessesman is more sinister than the iconic Batman villain. Also, he's named after the actor who played Dracula/Orlock in Nosferatu. Shreck means fear (I think) in German.
When they came out with this catwoman was transitioning from being more villain to being something between anti-hero and villain. There was a plan for a carwoman movie where she steals but also stops a violent crime. I don't remember what happened to it but I remember someone talking about it years ago.
The movie was put on hold at the time of the changes of the Batman franchise when they dropped Tim Burton for Joel Schumacher. By the time it got the greenlight again Michelle Pfeiffer had dropped out.
"This is my favorite movie of all time... I've only seen the first Batman like maybe twice." Are we the same person? The gigantic Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman poster I have says we are.
There are an insane amount of versions of batman that's why there's so many different actors play him he's part of Bruce waynes imagination, he can't loose, he's everything he wants to be, and every verson always starts with a double murder
Danny DeVito likes sushi so all the raw fish he ate was real. The black gunk oozing out of his mouth was a form of bile made by the makeup artist Ve Neil, she used mouthwash with red and green food coloring. The film had a lot of animals 20 cats, 42 real penguins (30 African penguins, and 12 king penguins), the Gouldian finch Michelle Pfeiffer put in her mouth, the Red Triangle Gang snake lady’s ball python, the poodle lady’s little poodle, and the organ grinder’s spider monkey.
just saying, as my grandparent just died and she had her fathers army issue horse whips from the first world war, so we were cleaaring the house and tried out the horse whips in the garden, cracking a whip is the easiest thing in the world to learn if its a proper whip and not a movie prop, i proper whip you cant fold and loop up, its 10foot long and 6foot is stiff like a fishing rod and its the piece of 3inch string on the end that makes crack.
Yes! The cinematic art of the city was incredible. It was gothic and slow, had an introspective and sad sort of feel to it. Now, that Vicky Vale line is in the movie because after the first one came out, comedians and critics ripped the first batman a part for allowing her into the bat cave.
The sets in this really are amazing for the time and just makes me think of Nightmare before christmas , the music is perfect and my fav scene out of the bunch is the Masqurade party scene just having Selina and Bruce wear no masks cause their real selves are Batman and Catwoman. I also like that Shrek was a villian for both Catwoman and Penguin, he manipulated Penguin for the most part till Batman exposed him, and he created Catwoman.
This is alll so true! Thanks so much for ur comment! Things I missed or didn’t say or think of! So thank U! I haven’t seen the nightmare before Xmas! Heard it’s awesome!
Selina Kyle becoming Catwoman is one of my absolute favorite scenes. Michelle Pfeiffer’s performance is so powerful and backed with the music which is so tragic and unsettling but also thrilling - absolute brilliance! She’s my favorite live action Catwoman. I also really appreciated Camren Bicondova’s portrayal in the tv show Gotham.
Too bad her costume was vacuumed sealed. Creates a lot of issues but made the film even more worthy after so many decades. Lots of temptations to delve into . . .
It may be the case that Selena seems unhinged because she's still shocked and reeling from her new sense of freedom and confidence, not to mention the fact that she died but not just died, murdered by her boss. If you see her facial expression, it's like she's in on a cosmic joke or has an understanding she didn't have before.
This is my favorite Batman movie of all time, Ames!!! BUT.....my all-time favorite movie is the 1933 "King Kong". (Please don't hate me!!! 😭 I'm sorry!!!) 😭

Interesting how she was dropped from a height by Schreck, Batman, and Penguin. It is no wonder her scream of frustration shattered all the remaining glass in the greenhouse.
I've always loved that the Penguin's parents were played by Paul Reubens and Diane Salinger, Pee-Wee and Simone from Pee Wee's Big Adventure.
Love this fun fact I just learnt!
Burgess Meredith who played Penguin in the 66 tv series was supposed to play Penguin’s dad for this movie but couldn’t due to health issues so Paul got the role.
There’s something so goofy and charming about these older super hero movies that I just love 😂❤
Totally!!
Christopher Walken was also really good as the bad guy in the Bond movie A View to a Kill....I await a time when I'm looking at a good view and somebody says "what a view!" so I can say "to a kill! [evil laugh]" 🙂
3:00 - Michael Gough, a distinguished British character actor, as Alfred, Ames. If you'd like to see him when he was younger, check out "Horror Of Dracula", from 1958.
When John Williams passes away, they’re gonna have to make a national holiday of that day. He is,I have no words.🎼💫🚀🎯
Seriously he’s amazing!
Danny Elfman?
It holds a nostalgic place in my heart. It is in point of fact my 8th favorite Tim Burton film ever.
28:51 My response to this particular quote is… “Tell me about it, I thought this only happened in Bugs Bunny cartoons.”
Danny DeVito as The Penguin is next to Heath Ledger as The Joker my favorite performance of a Batman villain.
also i want to specifically support that you are doing a commentary and not just a "first time reaction." i hope it will succeed in the algorithm and that we get share your other favorite movies.
Thanks for your great reaction. Your unapologetic delight in this movie was really fun to watch--made my day.
Thanks for watching. I am LOVING all the comments on this video! Y’all have made my day as well!
Wow!! So jelly! I did not have those things!! I cut apart and sewed an undershirt for a mask and used my bros karate belt as my whip !
@@holddowna I still have the cards. Omg I can see you doing that too. 🤣🤣🤣
Sucks for me!😅
Just here to wish you & all your viewers a Happy & Blessed New Year from Nashville, my new friend!🙏❤
See ya!
✌️🌎❤️
Thanks for sharing!! I get that, but maybe rewatch!!! Happy New Year!💫
@@holddowna I'm Blessed to live a zen life, friend. Quit computers after college in '95. Was forced to get one of these things called a "phone" these days😅 recently. Didn't even know wtf a UA-cam was, so been out of the game for a while. But since i said what I said & here now will try & get those sequels on a comp dvd & check out soon. When do will revisit to watch your fun reactions & how it became your fave Batman Jam!🤗💕
See ya!✌️😎
You cracking a whip on cam:a priceless moment in the making😊
FYI Max Shrek was the name of the actor who played the Dracula like Count Orlock in Nosferantu.
I'm glad you love it, I have since the cinema when it came out 😊
Yes! Thanks for watching Mike!
Love this movie, perfect casting with everyone. Keaton will always be my Batman!
If you haven’t seen the Witches of Eastwick, run don’t walk. Michelle Pheiffer, Jack Nicholson and other great cast!
U said it purrfectly!!!
The Burbs
Dead Calm
Uncle Buck
3 more Michael Keaton...
Johnny Dangerously
Night Shift
Pacific Heights
3 more Danny DeVito...
L.A. Confidential
Throw Mama From The Train
Twins
3 more Walken
Antz
The Dead Zone
Puss In Boots (1988) (it’s live action, not animated, and it’s also the most enjoyably fun movie that I recommend, that no one seems to know about. Maybe I’m the only one that likes it.)
3 more Michelle Pfeiffer...
Dangerous Liaisons
Scarface
The Witches Of Eastwick
Thanks for making videos eh.
P. S. I think the reason Penguin was so irresistibly drawn to Catwoman was... she ate a lot of tuna fish.
Mmmm... tuna breath.
I've always wanted to cosplay batman but still haven't gotten to do it. I got to cosplay zorro though which was cool
So cool! U must do Batman! Maybe I’ll see you at comic con one day! 🤣😭
@holddowna I will. I plan on it. And yes I do plan on going to San Diego con one day. I'm mostly been going to the one around Chicago for years
This batman was my favorite Batman movie growing up and still is ... esp bc of penguin and catwoman
So amazing!!
31:55 - "Not the cheese!!! The keys!!!" THE MASK!!! I love that movie too, Ames!!! ❤
Yes! I read fun facts about the movie at then end! They vacuumed her in! It’s nuts!
That scream in the beginning would make Draiman from 'Disturbed' proud.
they were gonna do Two-Face i thought with Billy D Williams being the Harvey Dent they were gonna build up
Yayayayaay! This is one of my favorites:)
I grew up watching this
This and T2 were the first two movies I remember being so hyped for before long before they were actually released.
💥❤️
YAS! MY FAVORITE BATMAN MOVIE EVER. THANK YOU!
Yay! Was fun to revisit! Been a while!
@@johnjohn1118 What? Finkle as Vicki Vale? Nooo waaayy...
Penguin has a lot of really nice things for someone living in the sewers for the past 33 years with out of work circus folk
My favorite Batman! I just want to live in that world.
Me too!
Amy can make a good movie better with her reactions. By far, the best smile on UA-cam.
Thanks Sean! Thanks for being here!!
I have that iconic Catwoman poster framed on my wall as well 👌 She is a total queen, pretty sure Catwoman was one of my first crushes. Also, you’re right, Michelle Pfeiffer had to be stitched into the costume every time she had to wear it.
Thanks for re watching with me!!!!!
@@holddownathanks for reacting, this was one of my favorite childhood films :) I’m SO dead at the *unlimited poontang* line, that was so corny 😂
My favourite Batman movie hands down. Christopher Walken has been my favourite actor for many years. And yes, Michelle Pfieffer did actually put a live bird in her mouth!
Love her! He’s soo good in this!
The bird Michelle put in her mouth is called a Gouldian finch (aka rainbow finch) they’re native to Australia
Walken is so good at playing diabolical that his corrupt businessesman is more sinister than the iconic Batman villain. Also, he's named after the actor who played Dracula/Orlock in Nosferatu. Shreck means fear (I think) in German.
I saw this first when I was a kid, to say Penguin was scary and horror like is an understatement..
Favorite Batman Movie Of All Time.
🥰🥰🥰🥰
When they came out with this catwoman was transitioning from being more villain to being something between anti-hero and villain. There was a plan for a carwoman movie where she steals but also stops a violent crime. I don't remember what happened to it but I remember someone talking about it years ago.
She is the goat
The movie was put on hold at the time of the changes of the Batman franchise when they dropped Tim Burton for Joel Schumacher. By the time it got the greenlight again Michelle Pfeiffer had dropped out.
"This is my favorite movie of all time... I've only seen the first Batman like maybe twice."
Are we the same person?
The gigantic Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman poster I have says we are.
💫💫💫💫❤️❤️❤️thanks for hanging out with me as I revisit Amy fave movie :) been a while and I felt like a kid on Xmas morning
Good on you. You want atmosphere this is it.
I’m actually EMBARRASSED I forgot to mention VE NEIL she was the reason I went to make up school so thank u
@@holddowna no problem, she’s a very nice lady, I met her twice at the Motor City Nightmares Convention here in Michigan last year and this year.
To be fair, it's my dream in life to see you dressed up as Catwoman too.
Lol!!
Looove this movie so many memories of watching this at my grandparents house with my brother and cousins so many times such a great choice 👏👏👏👏🙌
Love hearing ppls stories of how much they appreciate this film! Makes me smile!
Honestly I saw the first Batman in theaters, along with Raiders of the Lost Arc. What a great time to be alive!
WHAT AN AMAZING TIME IS RIGHT! So amazing !
Best sequels dedicated this one , and The Fly 2.
The Fly 2 as a sequel is the perfect movie.
just saying, as my grandparent just died and she had her fathers army issue horse whips from the first world war, so we were cleaaring the house and tried out the horse whips in the garden, cracking a whip is the easiest thing in the world to learn if its a proper whip and not a movie prop, i proper whip you cant fold and loop up, its 10foot long and 6foot is stiff like a fishing rod and its the piece of 3inch string on the end that makes crack.
multiplicity is one of my favorite keaton films! you must!
Good to know! So happy to hear this!
To this day I still do the hand bat the way Penguin does, and say "yawn" randomly when friends are being boring lol
I still have the VHS tapes for this movie and the 1989 Batman 😁
💫💫💫
You should add Ladyhawk to your movie mix if you want to see some Michelle Pfeiffer.
Never heard of it!!
@@holddowna Matthew Broderick, Rutger Hauer, a medieval love story. I think you’d really like it.
my favorite movie is a little different but also a Christopher Walken movie, King of New York (1990) by Abel Ferarra
Lots of temptations to delve into . . .
Penguin's Father was Paul Reuben... "PEE WEE HERMAN"!
The Franchise really went down when Joel Shoemaker took over for Tim Burton.
YES! Multiplicity is Michael Keaton comedy gold!
I have to watch it!!!!
It may be the case that Selena seems unhinged because she's still shocked and reeling from her new sense of freedom and confidence, not to mention the fact that she died but not just died, murdered by her boss. If you see her facial expression, it's like she's in on a cosmic joke or has an understanding she didn't have before.
Love this comment
Michael Keaton, for me, is the best Batman. Even better than Adam West. Batman Returs is my favorite Batman movie. Loved your reaction.
She is still my favorite Catwoman to do it, incredibly perfect.
Me toooo
