Are these centers similar to the Indian residential school for Indigenous children operated in Canada and US 20 years ago? the difference is the Indian schools were used to kill the Indian culture inside the children and it was very successful for now a day not too many Indigenous people can speak their own languages. Terrible things were also done to the children by the Catholic priest who operated these schools. That included beating, starved and all kind of abuse. The Xinjiang re educational center were to remove the terrorist thinking away from the extremists and at the same time teach them skills to have a better life. The extremists were allowed to go home at the weekend. Which is the better way to help the extremists? Western way to use bomb and bullet? or Chinese way?

Big contrast to Gaza, eh. It's good to see the modernized lives of Uyghur people. For some people in the west, minority groups were supposed to stay in their relatively primitive societies. Any development was seen as ruining the culture. I think that was a zoo mentality. We don't want the Uyghurs to exist just for the sake of their music and dance. They have their rights to prosper. What the west has been doing in recent years, while waving the flags of freedom and human rights, make the Uyghurs suffer.

    • @xucg

Western countries have imposed sanctions on Xinjiang in the name of forced labour, forcing Xinjiang enterprises to dismiss Uighur employees. Germany, for example, recently forced Volkswagen to leave Xinjiang in order to increase unemployment among Uyghurs, make them live in poverty, and create ethnic antagonism. It is ironic to say that it is to protect the human rights of Uyghurs.

totally agreed. Gaza has contributed hundreds of billions dollars in revenue to the American military industrial complex and channelled hundreds of millions into the Washington regime's offshore bank accounts. The 38,000 Palestinians bombed to pieces (to-date) were simply minor incidents. Americans want Uyghurs to contribute the same.

In 2007, a group of us, Chinese Americans (origionally from Taiwan and Hong Kong) traveled to Xinjiang. There was a high school next to the hotel, but we were so surprised that none of the students could understand us. They couldn't speak Mandarin Chinese.
I believe all the public schools in US are taught in English, so why not that the offical language be taught in the public schools in China now. Mandarin Chinese helps them communicate and get a better job. Of course anyone can speak their local dialects at home or anywhere else in China.
