What a beautiful village! You filmed activities of the Lotus Pond Society in the village. "The Lotus Pond Society is a folk religious organization of the Bai ethnic group with profound cultural connotations and historical significance. It is mainly composed of Bai women who join at a certain age (usually in their fifties) to pray for peace and health."
As a Chinese, I must point out that the rural areas in the south, such as Zhejiang and Guangdong, are completely different from those in the north. The rural areas in the north are still very poor and backward.
China's rural areas are also very clean now. Nontourist areas are clean even if they are poor. However, the living conditions in rural areas are much better now, and the gap with cities is getting smaller and smaller. Twenty years ago, there were many dirt roads in rural areas. Now, they have all been built into cement roads. Many rural roads have solar street lights. Every village and household in the countryside has access to the Internet and power supply. The changes in rural China in the past twenty years are truly earth-shaking.
In the 1990s, the Chinese government launched a project called "Village Access". All areas across the country, including remote areas, must have access to roads, electricity, water and internet as long as they are inhabited. This is due to the fact that these "lifelines" are state-owned assets. And if our government wants to do something, it must get it done. I remember when I was a kid, slogans everywhere were about caring for the environment and being hygienic. My hometown's rural area is also an area prone to natural disasters. The government rebuilt houses damaged by mudslides and the 2008 earthquake for free and provided solar energy. Ethnic minority houses are also provided with free decoration =. =Hahaha!
Yes, in rural China, the Chinese government also provides free housing for elderly people over 60 years old, helping them upgrade their dilapidated houses and reduce their economic burden, which can make their living conditions better. If you are an ethnic minority, congratulations to the government for investing more money in you. China's power and network companies are state-owned, and many remote rural areas are upgrading their power and network facilities. These companies are losing a lot of money doing this, and they must do it. This is the government's order
As far as I know, many of them are operated at a loss by the government, including high-speed railways. Only a few lines such as Beijing to Shanghai and Beijing Guangzhou do not lose money, while other lines have been operating at a loss all year round, officially because 12306 is a state-owned enterprise. The country requires that it must be convenient for the people and also drive the economy of central and western cities. I think the government has done a great job in this regard
@@user-yr4ei8zo3f The investment and construction of high-speed rail are different. This loss can be exchanged for GDP growth. Many of the investments made by the Chinese government in rural areas, such as free road construction, helping poor people build houses, building networks, improving the environment, etc., are all at a loss and do not contribute to economic growth. In the short term, it cannot bring GDP growth. It is purely a livelihood project that the government is doing to help people reduce their burden and improve their living conditions. Many countries are unwilling to do this vigorously, and the companies that do these things are private enterprises. They only consider whether to do this thing based on investment returns. China is different. The Chinese government orders these enterprises to do this thing, and no matter how much money they lose, they must persist in doing it. Whoever doesn't do it will step down and be held accountable by the government, including officials, That's why in some remote areas and mountains, you have at least 4G and some places have 5G networks, while in some developed countries, rural networks have speeds like turtles, and no company is willing to help them upgrade
Obviously, you missed the most important attraction: Shengyuan Temple. It is the temple gate that flashed by at 9:55 in the video. Shengyuan Temple was built in Nanzhao (738-902), a thousand-year-old temple. You saw a group of people in the room at 10:33 in the video. They were performing a ritual: the Taoist "Chaozhen Li Dou Fa Hui".

Folks, since you are in Dali, you may wanna visit Xizhouzhen喜州镇, a Bai Zu ethnic town which is over a thousand years old. Brian Linden, an American has settle down there and opened a hotel, called 喜林苑 Linden Centre, kind of an international visiting center. The whole town knows Linden. It’s his turf. Otherwise, it will be very troublesome if there is no electricity. The weight of two people increases power consumption, so don't drive too far...
you are wrong. In China, anywhere with electricity can be used for charging. You can borrow charging from small roadside shops or even from people's homes, as long as your attitude is good. Generally, people are willing to help you and let you charge for free, especially since electricity prices in China are among the cheapest in the world, only about 0.3 to 0.5 yuan. Some farmers in Dali look very poor, but they are actually very rich. They rent out their houses as hostels and earn a considerable income every year. Some people open restaurants and serve delicious farmhouse dishes. You can find them in the village and try Dali's specialties.
Your China videos are very inspiring, and I wish I could send the links to my friends in Kunming so they could also enjoy them. Very interesting! You are lucky to see the religious activities in the village. This is a ritual of Chinese Taoism called "拜斗". The Big Dipper holds a very high status in Taoism. People pray to the Big Dipper for peace, health, and longevity, which is similar to praying to gods and Buddha in temples, except that the location is changed to home. The old people in the countryside like to gather together when they are not working, which is their most common way of socializing. Don't worry, you're not disturbing or offending them. Just watch quietly. Regarding the replies of some people in the comment area, I have no idea whether they are ignorant, foolish or malicious. However, it is obvious that they don't know much about China's boundaries on religious activities. First of all, China does not ban any religion. Buddhism, Taoism, Islam, Christianity, as well as the beliefs of various ethnic groups are all recognized. What is prohibited is the use of religious name to promote personal cults, collect followers, claim to fulfill other people's wishes in exchange for money or property, or intimidate or deceive others by forging miraculous events. These similar actions have obvious cult characteristics, and their essence is deception, with the purpose of making money, which is of course prohibited. The religious activities of these old people do not meet any of the above conditions, and they even do not have a clear purpose. It's just a way for them to kill time, which is their freedom.
I live 20 minutes away from the three Pagodas, and I never tire of the view of the mountains; every morning, they look different, with low clouds or the sun rising on the opposite of the lake, casting shade on the mountains...Peace
A vast country also needs good governing. There are many vast countries but with bad governing and the country is like a hellhole. China's neighbor on the west border is one good example. They talk a lot but not much action and then are very jealous of China's achievements.
@@hengongchua6250 India: Are you mocking me behind my back????? I am the world's largest democratic country, and our citizens have universal freedom. Do you have it?
Just drove around the Lake (Er Hai) a month ago; being a tourist hot spot, prices are slightly more expensive but still quite affordable! A lot of brightly colorful (Baby Blue, Powdery Pink, etc) name brand convertible cars (BMW, VOLVO...) for rentals all around the lake!!!
As a Chinese, I feel it's important to explain what that is: it's when a family, after someone has passed away, invites a local person who understands the ancient rituals to perform the ceremony, which typically involves reciting Buddhist scriptures (Buddhism in China is unique in its own way). The family will burn paper money and clothes, as these are meant to serve as the deceased's necessities in the afterlife. It's a time of sorrow, so you'll see that when the host greets people in the room, they aren't happy.
I noticed that when you entered the village, you found the local women doing their ritual. I believe Luke was eagered to observe it at that moment. But you just stood on the street and just let Naomi film few seconds. Maybe you were afraid you would scare these women (Male, strong, foreigner...), that was very gentle and kind!!
@@TwoMadExplorers A few minutes ago, a local fan has explained this ritual to us on bilibili, I repost and translate it here : The Bai people have their own religion, worshipping their own village's protective god, called "Benzhu(本主,original lord)", which is called "Wuzeng 武增" in the Bai dialect, and the Benzhu worshipped in each village may be different.
Yunnan is a geographical miracle, with tropical, plateau and high mountains, so crops are also very rich. You can't find a place on this planet that can produce coffee, tea, coconut, blueberry and apple at the same time, but Yunnan can.
Folks. Don’t know about your itinerary. But if you’re going back to Kunming. You may wanna check out Hamazhe Yixiang Food Street,哈马者彝乡美食街. Kind of like a farmers’ market of Yi Zu ethnic food., particularly busy on the weekends. There are lots of ethnic groups in Yunnan, Yi Zu, Bai Zu, Naxi Zu, etc. they all have different cultures and traditions. Super cool. 😊❤
Damn, the countryside roads are still so good and clean. Nobody throws trash on the side of the road. This shows how the Chinese government has educated the Chinese to be so civilized.
Sometimes I will think about why I like to see their videos while there are many and many China travel youtuber in here, maybe the reason is very simple because I will not worry about if the next talking will offending or not, all the attitude and values in luke and naomi seems can be understood by most people and always respect the local and try very hard to being considerate, it is very relaxing to see what's going on in the video, that's the purpose I see something in Internet, I don't like to leave my comfort zone, considering that I have to face all the challenges and difficulties in reality.
Since you started using the beautiful electric donkey, your activity radius has significantly expanded, making you happier and more free spirited. lol...
I went to Dali once in March this year. In fact, I joined a tour group. Next time I have time to go out and play in Yunnan, I must travel freely, and slowly. I like the sky in Yunnan very much, but unfortunately, my mobile phone was soaked in water in Blue Moon Valley. I haven't repaired it yet. My photos are all inside.

I just returned home from two weeks in China (Shanghai and Beijing). This vast and magnificent country is on my bucket list of must-sees, and I hope to go back to see more of It. Great video, guys.
The way you visit really gives you a deep understanding of Dali. As a Chengdu native, I have been to Dali twice, but I have never been able to visit these places. It is really great, to understand the life of ordinary people there, but I also think blueberries are a little expensive😂❤
Wondering if you have the plan to visit the northern part of China afterwards, if so I am looking forward to it, northern China is my home and it has a lot to offer😁
You guys are one of the most amazing blogger who come to China with very open mind and respectful attitude, not like some of bloggers came here and complain people don’t speak much English or they can’t use Facebook etc . This is China which is a sovereign country, we have our own app and social platforms and if you go to a foreign country, you will need to respect locals and embrace new cultures, enjoy your time in China 😊
Very sad that people are arguing about the price of blueberries in the comments. For China, prices do vary from region to region. I'm also worried about giving you two of my favorite UA-camrs a not so good experience for that. hope you enjoy the rest of your trip.😢love from tokyo
When buying things at street stalls in Chinese tourist areas, you must negotiate the price. For example, that box of blueberries priced at 30 yuan, you can try bargaining it down to 20 yuan(it's a fair price for that) . As for the bottle of blueberry juice priced at 20 yuan, I'm quite sure it's worth no more than 10 yuan. You can enter the numbers on your phone and negotiate with them. If they don't accept your offer, you can always agree to the original price later.

China is a vast country and varies greatly from place to place, especially in country
A vast country also needs good governing. There are many vast countries but with bad governing and the country is like a hellhole.
China's neighbor on the west border is one good example.
They talk a lot but not much action and then are very jealous of China's achievements.

🙏❤️
That's not a sacrifice, that's chanting.
