Dileesh Pothen has told in an interview that Joji could not be considered an adaptation of Macbeth. He loved the play from his college days, and during the pandemic they wanted to do something and he and the screenwriter Syam Pushkaran (writer of kumbalangi nights), made this just taking Macbeth as an inspiration.
Like you guys said, there is a great indian kitchen theme in this movie which is narrated subtle. She does everything there and feed these guys. Fahad fazil doesn't even know how to connect the gas cylinder.. she spends most of her time in kitchen as you see. And later when the father goes ill, finally she get to relax , you see that she appointed a lady to do the chores and she is seen putting nail polish. And she being the lady Macbeth sow the seeds in fahads mind by asking are you gonna spend the end of your life on this kitchen slab. Thats one point where he decides to take charge and kill his father. Also, i feel that the doc relative who constantly said that their father is going to die symbolized the witches. He tells fahad that you are gonna be a millionaire and that's where Fahad goes ambitious.
If you guys havent noticed, at the last scene when the police asks him to blink if he has done the murders , he's trying to open his eyes more wide open😂

Before his father got heart attack, Joji use to smoke nearby the river which is far away from his house. Then he started smoking near to the house..In the climax, we could see that he is smoking inside the room.. Dont know whether the makers are trying to convey something here.
Justin Verghese's BGM took this movie to another level. Hats off to him and the entire team for making a movie from the heart without a care for the box-office. That's pure, unadulterated creativity. And look, it works wonders!
3 witches May well be the one doctor cousin who called Joji a millionaire when he dropped him home. He put that greed inside him. I felt Baburaj who played the eldest son was the best performer in this though. At least on par with Fafa. He was as natural a masculine rubber estate owner you can get in a Kerala estate. Btw it’s the same cinematographer as Kumbalangi nights and hence the beauty in the shots 😊 Also the director Dileesh was one of the producers and actors of kumbalangi. Even in Joji he was the doctor in the final scene covered fully in PPE kit.
I agree, Baburaj delivered a splendid performance in this movie as the hot headed brother and burned the screen everytime he was on it.... I actually thought he had the best role in the movie.
Bincy was the one who started the idea that the father dying might be a good idea... when joji came to eat and asked for a fish and he explained the father was going to be alright. Bincy said that, oh I thought u were asking for the fish to celebrate something. Fish is seen as a celebratory thing in bible. She kinna was instigating, even without her realizing it.
Baburaj's Jomon was hands down the best character of the movie!🔥 His character is a perfect example of how the only good guy around is usually considered the black sheep of the family/community just because of his straightforwardness and brutal honesty while the real snakes hide behind their fake religiosity and facade of neatness. And Baburaj portrayed that "Outspoken Achayan" from Kottayam so perfectly!♥️
When bincy tells joji to wear the mask and come down for the funeral, it was to cover the subtle smile that joji couldnt control after hearing the mourning songs..pothetans brilliance..
Maheshinte prathikaaram is a simple film....but a great film...nothing unpredictable or complications or a thriller....but like dileeshs other films...the characters and the film is just great....since it is so relateable with its simplicity you wud love it...plz watch it without expectations and fahadh as usual is great in this
Am I the only one who felt sorry for Joji despite being a nasty character? I guess that's the beauty of Fahad's talent. Having grown up being the youngest brother in a male dominated family this was very relatable. Also worth noting everything he does back fires on him big time, including the climax scene.
You Should watch Maheshinte Prathikaram too. It's also a Dileesh Pothan- Fahad Fasil combo film. It's the movie that brought a new turn, a new change in malayalam cinema even including the title.
You should definitely watch the interview of fahd faasil , dileesh pothan(director) and syam pushkaran(writer) by Film Companion.... Will get to know more about their trio and process👌
Its the right time to go for another fafa, dileesh pothan combo "maheshinte prathikaram"... You can watch the entire different characterization of fafa.
Bincy was the lady Macbeth, obviously not to the degree that Lady Macbeth originally is supposed to be. But she's the one who observed everything from the begining silently, she suffered, she was fed up, wanted to be free and she conspired with Joji, slowly pushing him towards taking an action by saying stuff like "your youth will be wasted away on this kitchen slab". It was so wonderfully subtle.
I thought the title had hook lines in it too, assumed from what they showed in the trailer. But I realized after someone pointed out in the comments that it actually represents the two murders : 1st from a capsule and 2nd from a pellet. Brilliant!
@@D.nya_art i know that...but you know his sister in law could have stopped him..but she was on his side even though not directly helping him..but her support has made him much more greedy
@@D.nya_art yeah..but see how he killed his father and brother..he killed his father slowly, but he became more cruel when killed his brother...the one person that he really likes in that home is his sister in law.. that's why i believe that she could have stopped him..

That's my interpretation. What do you guys think?
Also another theme that the film explored was "masks" we wear in public vs private... And the mask ppl wear symbolised that. Note the scene where during the funeral... The lady came to JoJo's room and said 'wear a mask and come down'.... And they gave each other a knowing look (partners in crime)... It was a brilliant subtle move by the director.
Unnimaya (Bincy) was the Asst Director of Maheshinte Prathikaaram and Kumbalangi Nights. Her spouse is Syam Pushkaran the writer of these movies. She is also a producer of this movie.
I looked up Macbeth only because Rick mentioned it in the first few seconds into the video. You're right Rick. It really got me curious to know more about Shakespeare's tragedies.
Guys its great u guys liked the film and Fafas acting. Thats good but its sad then u guys are not using time to see Mammootty and Mohanlals some old classics which will make u blown away. The ladies subtle yet powerful words were as impactful for joji as it was of Lady Macbeth to Macbeth. So she can be considered as the lady macbeth adaptation
Maheshinde Prathikaaram is a beautiful and cerebral experience. It may not be for Korbin and Rick since it’s pretty culturally contextual... they’ll surely appreciate the movie making genius and the artistic value in the movie but not sure if they’d imbibe the cultural, and Kerala specific leitmotifs scattered in the film.... we shall see. We shall be waiting...
The title JOJI has a capsule in the letter O and a mark like that made by an air gun pellet in the letter I. Its like the title says how Joji executed the two crimes. I heard Korbin say they were hooks...
The dim lighting in the house especially the kitchen. Bare drab walls. Even the palatial house set it the lush green surroundings is made to look drab.
Great review. Now that you talked about 3 witches, I think 3 sons might be the representation of them. They were the reason for the fall of the patriarch.
I think the doctor relative symbolized the witches. There is one scene when fahad drops, doc says that you are gonna be a millionaire. Thats one point where fahad got ambitious
The line where she asks him to wear a mask before coming down was just mind-blowing... I thought she was subtle in telling. Just wear a mask so ppl don't see that you are not grieving... 🤯🤯🤯
You obviously didn’t listen we said yes she would be the most lady Macbeth character. BUT SHE IS NOT PLAYING LADY MACBETH. If you know the original lady Macbeth you would easily see she is not playing lady Macbeth

Yet, another master piece ❤ #Fahadfazil #dileeshpothan
#SHYAMPUSHKARAN
Since Nawaz,Pankaj etc impressing u each time, these 2 guys r by far will b on top 3 best Indian actors. But mostly u guys stick with only bollywood. Watch Big Ms classics.
Very true
Yaah plsss
The ladies subtle yet powerful words were as impactful for joji as it was of Lady Macbeth to Macbeth. So she can be considered as the lady macbeth adaptation
When are you guys going to watch “Sudani from Nigeria” and “Parava “ 😭😭😭😭😭
Calorie burn each time Rick has after saying malayalm movie titles :)

Kumbalangi nights and joji shot by the the same cameraman shyju khalid
Rick is right, I am searching for shakespear works in the library now.
Plz react to iyobinte pusthakam. It starts Fahad fazil and is also inspired from shakespere Play of King Lear.
bro please do kurup teaser reaction
Iyobinte pusthakam 2014 fafa movie
The title JOJI has a capsule in the letter O and a mark like that made by an air gun pellet in the letter I. Its like the title says how Joji executed the two crimes. I heard Korbin say they were hooks...
Dileesh Pothan is the kind of guy that can make a glass of water act
Basil Joseph is the Director of upcoming multilingual film Minnal Murali, superhero movie.
Watch maheshinte prathikaram movie starring Fahad faazil
The dim lighting in the house especially the kitchen. Bare drab walls. Even the palatial house set it the lush green surroundings is made to look drab.
Fafa and baburaj..... Extraordinary performance 💥🤟
The comedy in this movie was True gold.
@@swethasasikumar333 Fair point.
@@swethasasikumar333 yes exactly.. After that scene, u can see the greed in fahadh's eye while he driving
Loved it, and was expecting these feelings from you both
Joji & jomon 🔥🔥🔥🔥
The line where she asks him to wear a mask before coming down was just mind-blowing...
I thought she was subtle in telling. Just wear a mask so ppl don't see that you are not grieving... 🤯🤯🤯
Thanks for discussing about our Pothettan's 3rd masterpiece.
Rick got it absolutely right, in the FC interview Fahadh mentions that he played Joji as an average person with these underlying characters
@10:20 there is obviously a Lady Macbeth , his sister in law !
You obviously didn’t listen we said yes she would be the most lady Macbeth character. BUT SHE IS NOT PLAYING LADY MACBETH. If you know the original lady Macbeth you would easily see she is not playing lady Macbeth
@@KorbinMiles I know the original lady Macbeth and like you said his sister-in-law would be the most lady Macbeth character since this is a loose adaptation. Didn't hear it till this point of the video , so commented. ✌️☮️
I'm from where the film is flimed
Fun fact: I didn't know it

Pls do watch maheshinte prathikaram ... their first combo.....and thats a true bliss
You guys should probably do a talk with director Dileesh Pothan, writer Shyam Pushkaran and Fahad. I have a feeling the meet would complete each group..☺️
The background score was developed with guys from Europe. especially the xylophone . Dileesh pothan mentioned this in an interview with manorama online. U can be proud that europe has some fine musicians
I could listen to Rick talking about Shakespeare all day long!!
