My 11 year old started with steel challenge matches. He's 13 now and we do them together. He loves it!
Saving these videos to my training folder. They're gold! After experiencing my first couple of matches this year, I would absolutely agree, these contain SO much good info. I'm going to watch them repeatedly to make sure it all sinks in.

What a coincidence, I wanted to get into competition shooting yesterday and had a hard time getting clarity on the differences, rules, procedures and then you uploaded your video Thank you!
This is what I’ve been looking for. Something for the 100% newbie that helps me figure out where to start. Thanks for this! I would love more stuff like this to help build up my confidence and comfort to get started.
Thank you 🙏 , shot my 1st USPSA last week , wish i watched this 1st 😂 but my 2nd is tomorrow so I really appreciate the info! I was pleasantly surprised how nice and helpful everyone was , so much fun 👍
Great video. My wife and I started competitive shooting this summer. It's intimidating to get into but I believe universally most folks will find a very welcoming, enthusiastic and knowledible regiment of shooters. Watching this video will help new shooters with confidence of exactly what to expect prior to day one. And if there is any concern beyond this video, I would encourage them to go to a match as a spectator. They will see that not everybody is an amazing marksman. But everybody IS having a great time. Thank you again David. Great job.
as past range officer for 4 world IPSC championships and competing for over 20 years your opening introduction, you speak the truth my friend. I really enjoyed the narrative.
I really enjoyed the video. I have done 3 competitions. On the first one I dq’d myself. The last 2 I completed. I will rewatch this before every match I run. This video has a ton of information. All of it is super helpful. I have subscribed to your channel. Keep making content please!
Thank you, so much, for making this. I've been considering dipping my toes into the competitive shooting pool for a while now, but am more than a bit nervous about showing up and being THAT NOOB, who does everything wrong. It's good to have a reference like this to help keep me from F'ing up too badly.
Shot my first match, SC local. This video helped me to be confident and prepared. No jitters on the line and I actually placed first in Limited in one of the stages🎉. Thank you so much!
Most of the field was Carry Optics and I was one of only three shooting Limited. I had practiced Smoke and Hope at home with paper targets, so I just burned it down as fast as I could😁
Ok for new shooters I want to share how I got disqualified 2 weeks ago. I finished the stage, took magazine out, racked the slide, confirmed chamber empty, hammer down. All good. Then my dumbass picked up the ejected round from the ground before I holstered and apparently, I muzzled my hand doing so. It happened so fast and that was my mistake. Remember don’t do anything until you are holstered! 21 cent round sent me home that day. Lesson learned.
Really great video. I just took an introduction class for USPSA last week. Watching this video helped clarify some things for me and also showed what to expect. I’ll be watching this again I’m sure to refresh myself.
Can’t begin to say how much I wish I would have watched and absorbed this before my first match or my second or my third, but at least I found it before I shot my fourth.
Im just glad you addressed the consistent choice of tiny shorts and tube socks. At least you arent unaware. This is coming from a Dad with equally poor taste in clothes Just found your channel a month ago, and have sub'd and binged on probably every video youve put out
That means you watched the old terrible ones. I am so sorry. Also USPSA had gotten awful with everyone wearing jerseys - so I intentionally don’t and wear the opposite trying to make it more approachable and less bass fisherman-y
First match last weekend, and I broke 180 EXACTLY how you described it here - moving to my left, had the gun indexed closed to my body. DQ on stage 3 of 6, spent the next 90 minutes watching everyone else have fun. :(
We had a guy that got really squirrely about his rifle that jammed during a multigun match and ended up doing a 180 with it trying to unjamm it. I felt bad for the guy after he was sent home for the day, but safety is a very big deal!
This was great and got me looking into nearby clubs to get started, something I've always said I wanted to get into. Can wait for part 2. I think I'll check it out 3rd Sunday this month
I’m finally going to get back into competitive shooting again after my first match way back last summer. I’m on the waitlist for my second ever match taking place this Sunday. I was unaware, but I guess I need to remove the magwell from my Canik Mete SFX for carry optics huh? Thanks for all of the solid advice, these are nice refresher videos. Great content as always, much love from Texas.
Excellent descriptions, explanations and presentation for someone interested in learning about local shooting competitions. I learned a lot. Well done. Thank you.
Excellent video. I appreciate the information. I used to shoot IDPA but there are not very common where I am and USPSA seems more common so that’s what I’ll be doing :)
This was a dope video. New club opened up near me and they have a USPSA level 1 match 2/12/24. For 25 dollars entry I figured I might as well try but I doubt it will go well lol
I have my first match next month, and I will be very, very happy (like over the moon) if I don't come in dead last. I will still be happy if I come in next to dead last. It will give me a realistic place to build from.
Interning video I am surprised you did throw in the bull armory extreme racer for comparison. Something you didn’t mention is higher end gun makers usually give better support.
FINALLY, someone made a new competition shooter video that new people can actually understand. Thank you. Any interest in doing a short video just explaining what practical competition shooting is that's targeted towards people that know nothing about firearms? Other videos have tried, but they all end up being pure action with death metal playing and explain the game to people that already know the game, instead of explaining things to people that know nothing.
One of the best competition options for novice shooters is Steel Challenge. You can start them with .22 pistols or rifles, you don't have to start from a holster, little movement, and you can use a red dot.
You made this video at the right time. I've done a handful of steel challenge and local falling steel matches, but been wanting to give USPSA a shot. Question: I have two guns that I could use, a Shadow 2 for CO, or my modded Staccato P for open. The P would be open minor which would put me at a disadvantage with scoring, but I'm much more comfortable with it. Would I be making a mistake by starting off with the P? I'm a B class shooter for steel challenge with the P. I just got the Shadow a few weeks ago so I haven't ran it in anything.
I know you didn't ask me but since there isn't a response, I'll weigh in. I'd start off with the gun you are most comfortable with. In a first match, you ain't winning open or carry optics so the disadvantage of minor scoring in open division won't make a shred of difference. If you try it out with your open minor gun and decide you like the game and want to get serious about competing, it would be best to start getting reps on your CO gun since you'll want as much competitive equity as possible if you're interested at all in where you place in the standings.
Great video! Wish I would have had this video when I started shooting earlier this years. Btw with winter right around the corner, do you have any tips that pertain to winter leagues outdoors? Staying warm or moving around the frozen ground with a loaded weapon. Thanks for the great videos your awesome!
Hey David, I have been binge watching your videos and loving them. I recently started competing in a local range weekly competition and can say with confidence your videos are helping me rapidly climb through the divisions taking first in division nearly weekly. I’m considering competing uspsa next year, do you have any advice for dealing with ammo costs? Reloading just doesn’t seem to make economic sense in 2022 with the cost of primers at 10 cents each of you can find them. Thanks again
Great video. This looks similar to IDPA. I don’t know what the difference is other than how the scoring works. It seems to me that IDPA scoring is much simpler and straight forward?
The scoring is better in USPSA and does a better job separating shooters. A straight forward stage where there is .2 seconds different in the top runners will create a bigger gap than time only scoring models.
I've watched about a dozen of these your first match procedures videos, everything has been very clear, I thoroughly understand no ammo in the safe area. What no one has ever explained is when and where do you load your magazines? At what point may you place loaded magazines in your magazine holders on your belt? Thanks in advance if you can answer this.
Video was great! Only part I took issue with is reccomending the minimal ear pro (in ear squishies). Yes they are cheap and can mitigate a lot of the force, but having active ear pro that seals to your head is much better for the longevity of your hearing. Spend the dosh on the ear pro, your grandkids will thank you for it.
Concerning eye protection: Do regular prescription eyeglasses count? I seriously doubt they would, do I have to wear those big ol' honkin safety glasses that fit over them?
I know this is kind of an old video, but it was great. I plan on going to my first match on the 16th. I looked for Part 2 of this video and I'm not seeing it?? Any link?
At 12:40, you're topping off a mag with the round you cleared as the RSO calls range cold. Is that theoretically problematic as an ammunition handling thing? This is an excellent video. USPSA needs to be showing this.
I just signed up for my first USPSA match and the match director sent this out to me to watch before the match.
