I've always said hikers are some of the most practical and innovative people and like you said, good thing we're not all the same. Always good to see other old guys out doing stuff. Happy trails.
Lol, you're right, I don't know how anyone got by before ViseGrips hahaha. When I hike in areas without streams or creeks to get fresh water during the summer, drinking hot water really sux. I was surprised at the temp difference. Thanks for watching Sean. Hope all is well buddy 👍
THX. I just converted my liter-sized "Life Water" bottle. The top of the sport cap had broken off earlier in the summer. Cut the tubing at acute angle and worked it into the nipple part. I struggled less by twisting the tubing while pushing. No leaks after assembly. Got to go hiking now.
I just got my new backpack and have my water bottle holders in the front on my straps, but I never forgot watching this video a year ago and I love this hack so much! No matter whether you carry your water in the front or the back, it’s a pain to constantly be taking your bottle out to take a swig. This hack keeps me from having to fool with a bladder and makes sure I’m staying hydrated during my hike. 👍🏼 Thank you so much!
Thank you so much too! It's always nice to know this is being put to use. I hope you get some great mileage out of your new pack and enjoy getting out there. Thanks for watching and commenting. Atb, Tony
I bought one of those smart hoses that goes on the bottle. It works out great, but I really like your idea of the reflexives. I bet making one is much cheaper than buying one already made too. The good thing about where I am at is that cold water is usually readily available from the streams in the smokies.... but that’s not always true depending on the trail you take.
Hey Saline. I wish we did have the cool running streams that you get to enjoy. We have a few, but they are few and far between. A lot of ours are dried up at this time and it's wise to carry a couple of liters on a hike. I never expected 17° difference. Take care buddy and good to hear from you 👍
awesome video. my army buddies say put your water container in a sock, wet the sock, suspend it in the air/ "hang it from something", wait about 30 minutes, or preferably longer, and you have cool water.
Thanks Chris. I've always hated getting a mouth full of hot water hiking in the summer afternoons but I had no idea it was getting this hot. We haven't had rain in a long time and the creeks around here have pretty much dried up leaving no chance to filter fresh cool water so this bottle coozie worked really nice without weighing very much. I really was surprised.
Really cool tips. Never would have thought of the hose into the smart bottles. And the koozie for the bottle is great during summer. I also let air back into my bladders to get rid of the vacuum. If not, I find that my hose will slowly drip as I hike. Thanks for the video. Looking good with that beard and sweet hat!
I know you have experience with this heat too. I really was surprised at the difference and it was only 1.75 oz. Worth it to me in the really hot times of the year. I wonder how it would work with a bladder ??? Thanks Cameron
Been a while! Glad to see you again. Great hack with the water bottle. 17 degree difference, I'll take it! When I was in the Army... and had to drink out of a canteen in the god awe-full heat, well I hated that. anyway, take care!.. good to see you.
I'm liking this idea for my regular water setup for my thru-hike next year. Not a fan of the strap carry either. I'm using a portable bidet on that thru-hike and starting in the winter. I'm already putting together a koozie for my bidet bottle to keep the wash water warm while I hike. Shudder (literally) at the thought of a COLD rinse on my bum in the backcountry. Nice video sir. Well played.
Thanks Eli. This all stemmed from not being able to reach my water easily with a full pack (Gossamer Gear Murmur) I was surprised at the difference. All my other packs I have no problem but this coozie will come in handy on those really hot days. I appreciate you watching 👍
That’s a cool idea, my friend. That was quite a set up lol but it works. I like it. I would not have expected that water to get that hot, huge difference to the bottle that was insulated.
I know you've seen the terrain around here. What shade trees there are are kinda puny and I was in and out of them all day. In the past I've wondered how hot my water was but never thought to check it. I really was surprised and all the creeks there were all dried up so no chance for fresh filtered water. All of our southeastern states are struggling right now. Bring on fall weather. LOL Thanks for the comment my friend. ATB, Tony
Great video, good idea. The hydration hack is pretty clever. No more cleaning bladders, just replace the bottle. It would have been interesting to know what the starting temperature of the water was but... 17 degree difference is worth the effort under the right/wrong conditions... Thanks for sharing...
The tube hack is great. INow i'm just thinking out loud here, I wonder if instead of the reflectix wrap; how a wet sock cooling through evaporation would work?
I did a similar thing with my bladder hose. It is wrapped in a couple layers of stretchy camo tape. This keeps the sun from heating the water in my dark green tube. It could also help prevent freeze up in the cold.
I've been doing that for last couple of years or more. Sometimes I freeze about 15-25% of it to make it last longer I usually do it on my second bottle. Before that I had it as bladder sleeve and drop some ice cubes in it before I start. It's what you got to do in southern Utah!
Hi Lj. I've done that a few times myself. The heat here melts it really quickly though. It's nice for the first few hours. Thanks for watching and commenting
I personally do not freeze beforehand. I don't know any hikers who do. Although you may lose a tiny bit of volume due to expansion it would work fine for a summer day hike. The Reflectix sleeve would be more beneficial to backpackers doing a multi day hike. Thanks for the comment. Atb, Tony ✌
Hi Mike. I have tried freezing the water the night before a hike. It worked ok for a while but thawed sooner than I expected. It would be ok for a day hike but this water bottle coozie would help for extended days. Michelle even likes this year's beard. Haha Thanks my friend
Crafty! I suppose the Smart water hose would be ideal for someone who doesn't use bladders or have a pack with the bladder packet or straps built in. I wonder what the water temp was before you started? If on a hot day hike like this I'd probably stick my water bottle in the freezer (if time and location allows) to enjoy the weight savings and ice cold results. Thanks for sharing Tony!
I suppose I should have checked the water temperature when I started out that morning but I just filled both bottles with tap water and didn't think about it. The 17 degree difference did surprise me, Thanks Amos
I like the idea of adding a water line to my Smart water bottle. Does the bottle collapse as you draw water out of it? If so, what do you do about that?? Thanks!!
Hi Neal. After taking a drink I bite the valve to hold it open for a second to let it drain and every couple of drinks I blow back slightly to re-inflate the bottle. It has worked well so far. Thanks for watching. Atb, Tony
Hey Calvin. I would say you could use that coozie when you're hunting arrowheads and artifacts but I bet you got a little something different iced down somewhere close. Hahaha Take care buddy.😆
Bluecollar Backcountry yeah I’m in Texas and the LSHT is in my backyard! But I never venture out on that trail anymore between about Mother’s Day and Halloween haha! Learned my lessons a long time ago.

Florida hiker here and these hacks are brilliant! Thanks for the share- now I need to get busy making two koozie's and one tube hack. :-)
Thank you and best of luck ✌
Heck yeah! That reflectix stuff is awesome. Works good to keep a beer cold too. I gotta figure out a way to run a hose straight to my can!!! 😉👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

On Iraq we did the same thing wetting a sock and putting it over the bottle. The evaporation process keeps the water cold.
