For anyone who doesn't surf, a 10 second hold down feels like 1 minute. A one minute hold down is insane and would kill 99.9999% of humans on the planet.
I'm a very beginner surfer. I didn't realise, even in light surf how long it can feel after coming off and getting a little tumbled. I can't imagine what a minute would feel like
@@MrMulrine most surfers will never get held down for more than 10-15 seconds in their lives, so the main thing is to not panic, just relax to conserve oxygen, and remember you've got this.
I would not live through that for sure. Its not like holding your breath at home let's say. Its totally different thing. I would gulp water in like 30 seconds max
Imagine holding your breath for 1 minute while jogging at 5mph on the treadmill. HR 140-160 and now you're holding your breath and trying to stay calm. I'll say it again- big wave surfers are some of the most impressive athletes on the planet.
Worst I’ve had is a 20 second hold down followed by 2 10 seconds and I was very close to blacking out, was totally convinced that was the end of me, I’m lucky there was a lull straight after. 1 minute with that much power in the water I just don’t see how you big wave guys can survive that even with all the training. Mental stuff.
I’ve never gone through a hold down before but did choke on a quarter once, knew I was running out of air and couldn’t breathe and then woke in the back of an ambulance. Not being able to breathe is absolutely horrible
As a former Life Guard and having lived on Oahu I used to practice holding my breath just for all the Surfing I was doing. It paid off once or twice . . . I know what you mean Dude !

In NJ around 1968 I got out after a hurricane (possibly Caroline) . I only caught 1 wave, a big thick, killer. I wiped - the speed was nutz, and was under for about 15 seconds, I was told. I thought it was 15 mins.
Aloha Kai, I started watching you when your mother was still with all of us. I thought you and yours were so gorgeous. I love you guys, and NY husband, who passed last year really saw what a precious person you are.❤😊
Very very heavy. I am scared just listening to this story. I know about that scorpion deal too. Feels like your heels are hitting the back of your head... uggghhhh
So, he's saying in some of the worst wipe outs he's had, it's when he gets injured on the fall. The water is very turbulent, so it thrashes your body around (ragdolling) and as it does so, you can feel it further damaging the injury you sustained on the fall. he had a session where waves held him under the surface of the water for about a minute. I can tell you from experience a few 15-20 second hold downs in quick succession feels like forever and you will come up with your lungs and eyes burning. You can accidentally aspirate on seafoam, making your whole lungs and sinuses burn like crazy and destroy your stamina, so to have three 1 minute-long hold downs within 2 hours is insane. anyway, wax on the top of the surfboard helps your feet grip, but not enough wax or old wax can cause you to slip. Which is what happened to kai on one wave. Tomahawking means you are thrown head over heels, literally cartwheeling down the face of the wave, and then he was thrown all the way down to the sea floor. Scorpion means he was thrown down with such force that his back arched when he hit the sea floor. So he pulls an inflatable vest (using CO2 canister), but was still held underwater for 61 seconds even with vest inflated. He 100% would have died in that wipeout with no vest. The hold downs are the worst. Nothing makes you appreciate the taste of air like being sucked into the sand over and over
That's why I only surf long and MIDs on 4-6ft waves 👌🌊 PS ... I live in the UK so that's all we get 😅
@coolbeans4399 same here in NYC 2-3 ft is fine for me 😂
Yup I made a promise to my wife and kids I’d never do anything over a 10ft face after getting knocked unconscious and breaking my back.
Wow are you good now?@@devinhanna53
Big wave surfers are on a different level of danger that very few can only imagine.

This explains it perfectly.
I haven’t gave it much thought cause I skate but man. I have a lot of respect for the water so I honestly fully agree. You guys are nuts.
& people talk about inflation like it’s bad
Only bidens
Well, that’s a cautionary tale if I ever heard one.
The longest I’ve been held down from a wave was 5 seconds and I can’t even handle that 😭😭😭
Same 😭
Please dig up the footage for this.

Way too gnarly
Hold downs are a part of surfing. I’ve been taking hold downs since 2 years old when I first learned to surf the beach break
I mean yeah but there's a four foot hold down, then there's a 73 foot hold down. I'm not sure if you can really compare the two
Yeah i started taking hold down when i was abiut 3 months old, just a part of surfing really
@@BigWaveStudio hold downs begin in the womb

You are tough nails and very intelligent man
Now, where is the video?
All you guys and your hold down comments surfing a max 7ft wave, come on…
Damn, we gatekeeping hold downs now??
You've only caught a 2ft wave in the whitewash but listen to your bravado.

Fill the inflation with air ( not co2) and have a breather tube like a rebreather.
Shame those surfer dudes don't have a wide vocabulary
It cant be that bad if you have to explain why it hurts.
bro are u serious
Cool comment! You should give it some try. Then we won’t have to suffer any more bs comments like this from you ever again… 👍
Love that song! 🎵!💪💖😝☝️thank Jesus💖you're up!☺️🙂👍😎 🏄! 💪💖
What is Tomahawking?
It comes just after a double up and just before a scorpion.
I respect him, but if you're held down for fifty seconds to a minute, wouldn't you be dead
Without the inflation vest. Don't talk about respect.
Mostly yes. But not always.
No. Many people train for holding their breath for long periods of time. For example free diving.
