While there are a lot of GREAT lines in this movie I personally think the funniest MOMENT is actually a moment with no lines being spoken. It's simply Gene Wilder's face after the line, "Could be raining."🤣🤣🤣🤣
When Igor meets Dr. Frankenstein at the train station and tells him to “walk this way,” the scientist thinks he means “way” as in direction and simply follows him. But Igor stops and says, “Walk THIS way,” prompting Frankenstein to mimic his hunched style of walking. This is easily the most iconic quote from Young Frankenstein, even though it’s a classic joke that predates the movie. Aerosmith got the name for their song “Walk This Way” from Young Frankenstein.
OK I'll admit I did not know it was a reference to "Chattanooga Choo-choo"! And the way the boy drops the Transylvania accent and switches to a flat unaffected American accent for the "Can I give you a shine?" Line is REALLY subtle and pretty funny. I think a big part of the joke is from the kid's perspective, though. Think about it, how many times a day does he get asked "What station is this?" Or "What track is this?" So the kid is just amusing himself as well, with the "Can I give you a shine?" rejoinder. 😆
The reference is from the song Chattanooga Choo Choo.. the joke is where the boy switches from European accent to New York to say the line "can I give you a shine" from the song. NOT the best line in this move. "SEDAGIVE" is, though.
Good scene, but there are more funny lines to come! Also i think this was referring to the Chatanooga Choo Choo song! The whole 30's scenery/homages,to the old Frankenstein pictures was great w/ the movie shot in black and white! Great motion picture making!
Good God, all my life this has been a mystery to me. Its apparently a reference to a song "Chatanooga Choo-Choo" that has lyrics about Track 59 and getting a shine.
It's just paraphrasing the lyrics to "Chattanooga Choo Choo", not making a perverse joke. "Pardon me, boy, is that the Chattanooga Choo Choo?" "Yes, yes, Track 29!" "Boy, you can give me a shine."
These are the moments when I feel old. Of course I got it and laughed. I grew up singing you leave the Pennsylvania station about a quarter to four, read a magazine and your in Baltimore... The fact that the younger people here have never heard of it really shows me that I am from another millenium.
There are moments when I feel old, too; but the song dates from 1941 and I'm not that old. Furthermore, I'm not American, so it's not really part of my cultural background. As it happens, I have the song in my iTunes library, so I hear it now and then, but I haven't memorized the lyrics in full, so this was an in-joke that I needed help with.
I saw this movie for the first time when I was 10, and just 6 months before it we sang Chattanooga Choo Choo in my school chorus, so I immediately understood this reference. I consider myself lucky, in that regard.
I am the voice of the German Boy in that scene. Mr Brooks auditioned us by sending us up to the roof of one of the sets at 20th while he stood on another and had us yell the line to him. Then he picked a few of the kids, including me, and brought them down to a looping where I believe Gene Wilder and Madeline Khan were dubbing some scenes. We all looped the scene with Mr Wilder individually and then went on our way. It wasn’t until we bought the vinyl soundtrack that we realized that was my voice. They had credited the wrong kid. Agent got it corrected and I still get a few five dollar checks per year from 20th for that. So glad of being part of that legacy. And yeah, that voice is more SoCal then German, Mel’s decision in the end, and I couldn’t be more pleased.
I love this movie. I remember when it was premiered in London I stayed at the cinema for the whole 3 performances, but I don't get this joke. Will someone explain please ?

Mel, Gene, etc.. all had this uncanny ability to make you think even when it is a joke. Comedy can be cerebral.
As humor goes, that skit was worth a couple of chuckles. The funniest part of it is that so many people didn't get it, as they expected. "He would have an ENORMOUS schwantzstuper, wouldn't he?" is hilarious, and her "whew" afterward is pretty good, too. (Maybe it was schantzstucker... oh, well.)
