Thanks mate, much appreciated! Just some small repair work to do on my bungalow, but the prep and application techniques you’ve shown will ensure I get it right. Cheers.
Interesting take on repointing a modern wall with a very pronounced struck joint, although a 3 in 1 mix sounds overly strong unless used with engineering bricks . If any would-be pointers require reliable technical guidance on repointing, do take the trouble to read the Building Research Establishment publication “Good Repair Guide No 24” (Repointing external brickwork walls) as this provides authourative information, including clarifying suitable mortar mixes, warnings of when worn pointing affects structural integrity and the importance of using lime pointing on old solid walls.
We use exactly same hawks as you for pointing and some small plastic type ones (like a hod) will try your method sometime! nice clip mate, Salutations from Lancashire!
Everyday a school day. One of the best vids on this subject. Never seen that type of hawk before. I was just looking at some vids to refresh my pointing skills as I haven't done a repointing job in years and I have one coming up. Going to make one of those Hawks with a lip. That's what I love about us builders, always inventing things to make the job easier and faster. Great work. Top freakin' banana.
Actually much about this demonstration is poor practice, in particular the overly strong mortar mix. Do take the trouble to read the Building Research Establishment publication “Good Repair Guide No 24” (Repointing external brickwork walls) if you want reliable guidance. Its only 10 squid so a real bargain.
Building Research Establishment publication “Good Repair Guide No 24” (Re-pointing external brickwork walls) suggests 1:1:6 (or 1:6 + plasticiser) a better choice. When in doubt follow the official guidance and also do a test panel.
Was looking at your hair! Not at your brick work. You look like a good tradesman as well as a good honest chap about your hair thanks matey. I'm in the trade too I'm a Decorator.
@modern studies hi mate no there is not practice but they do teach you the different types of finishing pointing. Its just practice to be honest. May be wrong on the courses as t was over 20 years ago since i went to do my bricklaying course.
If you need to buy a pointing board threes not many places that sell them so i bought a plasterers board and placed in on a vise to bend one side about 3" up stand. once i have bent the board on a 90 degree i cut a thin piece of ply and used grip fill or liquid nails or believe it or not a solution called sticks like shit.lol mmmmm stick the ply to your board . this ply is to stop the cement running of the board. i hope this helps . i have done a video showing how to make a pointing board.
Awful video, awful technique; you should never leave cementitious mortar shiny as it will film and flake off. The bricks arrises should always remain visible otherwise your using far too much. As for the staining my girlfriend can do it cleaner. Please people, don't use this technique. Get a pro in
Good video mate thanks, a question. When repointing a damp proof course should it be cemented above and below but not bridged? Or should I cover the whole thing?
uploaded in march, but listening to "feed the world" either someone's a bit slack on uploading videos, or that radio team is dead set on it being Christmas every day! haha but seriously, thanks for the video!
Thank you. I made my hawk from a plasterers board bending it at what depth I wanted . Then adding timber ply on the bottom to stop the mortar sliding. Think there is some on the market.
A neighbour had their house pointed, I pointed lol out that it looked really neat to my father and he replied " thats board pointing ! " That's how I know what type of pointing that is.
Brendan yes it is a strong mix i used a ratio just over 3-1 A 4-1 mix is good but when ive looked at jobs 20 years ago they are still as strong a today. If it works use it.thx
Why do you need that angle of mortar sticking out is there a reason because new brickwork doesn't have it it's a question not a critism thanks indeed to redo mine I have shiny bricks and I matching toweling red mastic thanks
erics vids this is struck jointed, most new builds, are just regularly jointed using a jointer rather than a pointing trowel (gives an indebted semi circle finish) both styles are fine, just regular jointing is quicker to do.
Mortar should never be stronger than the brick or substrate it is used with. If working on a period building use a mortar mix with lime in it. A compromise between a modern mix with portland cement, say 5:1 and a traditional lime mix could be a 6:1:1 ( 6 plastering/building sand, 1 portland cement and 1 Hydrated lime )
Hi yes I have done similar to enginnerring brick which have a very thin bed. Using sand and cement will not do so there is a nastics that can push in to the joint. Once done you use linseed oil to clean the brick up. Maybe this? Have a number of a speed pointing company that i have used for 20 odd years they should know. Can as for you?
@@Offensiveword hose down the wall after grinding it out. Let it dry. Good luck if you need to ask any questions i will make a few calls around. Thx Karl
The mix he’s suggesting is too strong. Generally speaking, houses (at least in Britain) are built using a 6:1 mix. As in, 6 parts sand, 1 part cement. The mix is done this way so that the mortar is not as strong as the brick, to allow for movement, and prevent bricks from cracking. The mix he is suggesting is more apt for the footing.
As you say the mix is all wrong, and also the pointing style rather ugly to be honest. Building Research Establishment publication “Good Repair Guide No 24” (Repointing external brickwork walls) as provides authourative information, including clarifying suitable mortar mixes, warnings of when worn pointing affects structural integrity and the importance of using lime pointing on old solid walls.
Yeah I have been reading all about this recently, really it should be pointed with the original type mixture, you know it's just common sense you don't really want mixtures together that have different expansion rates or moisture absorption rates, you can recycle bricks if the mortar isn't as strong as the bricks.
6 sand 1 brickies gray... 1 part lime... jointing and pointing and his method no waste great for really any of the 3 joint finishes Malc's in Perth WA ♥️
weather struck pointing has been done a certain way for many many years.... Because it works. If it aint broke, dont fix it. Get yerself a frenchman and do the job properly. (Thats not a man from France btw)
Andrew hall. Thank you yes a full rebuild mix is what you say but please remember you are only grinding out a depth of 25mm so you want a good strong mix but also matching the colour if needed.
If scaffolding is needed might be an idea to see if their roof needs doing or solar panels fitting at the same time or vice versa others you know doing roofing or fitting solar whether the house needs pointing to pass each others work or commission 😁
I agree, but customer funds may not be there to do all that it does make sense tho to do that. They only see what they are asking for in a job. Most of the time, there is always other stuff to do. Thanks for the message
Wow I’ve just got quoted £4000 to repoint a 20 m squared wall! Is that right! I’d rather learn to do the job myself. Or… I wonder if it would be cheaper to get the wall rendered?! I just need the gaps filling, rain water is going in !!!!
Is not a hard job to do. Grinding it out you can buy a machine say £100. With grinding bits. Use a board and a finger trowel to repoint it. Try it it's the mix of the mortar that is the mist important to get it done. Have a go. Just get your mix right. Not to wet. Mix it well. Not to dry.

Sorry mate not normally one to critique. But a few things need clearing up . Weather struck and cut pointing like tuck pointing should b performed by pointing bed joints first then perps.. 2 use a finger trowel or tuck trowel they go by various names some people like in oz they call them frenchmans but frenchmans are a different thing all together. 3 the lip at bottom of bed should be no wider than the width of your trowel, unfortunately yours is hanging out. Surely small intricate corners like the chimney can be done free hand? Just push the muck in and cut off with the trowel.
Easily done

I like that trowel, what size and make is it, I'd like to buy one thanks.
The hawk you're using. Did you put it together yourself?
What is the issue if this type of pointing gets cracks in it as it dries?
i use a Marshalltown trowel a small pointing trowel to fit the upstand of the hand board, alot use a finger trowel
