  • For nearly a century, the record store chain "Sam the Record Man" has been a mainstay in Canada, lighting up city streets with its iconic record-shaped signs.
Started in the 1930s by Sam Sniderman in Toronto, the chain was once the largest music recording retailer in the country with 140 locations. But in the face of changing ways to buy music over the past 20 years, only one lone store remains at the Quinte Mall in Belleville, Ont.
Now, its future is in question, as the owners say they're retiring after 45 years. But the community of dedicated music lovers have not given up hope.
    Global’s Fawwaz Muhammad-Yusuf has more.

I’ll miss that last Sam’s. I’d spend hours in the store, just browsing, and the selection was always the best. Destroyed by internet shopping, soon there won’t be many stores to browse in. Times change, but not always in the best direction. R.I.P. Sam the Record Man. You will be missed. 🇨🇦🖖🏻🇨🇦

It was over 50 years ago we used to cruise along Yonge St with the music from SAM'S pouring out.

Me too dude. Place is huge! Not to mention iconic. Maybe they can have it deemed historical or something 😎

@@scott3114 Though they gave us tonnes of archive footage. They aren't talking about the old Toronto location, that is long gone; it's been rebuilt and is part of Ryerson.
The "last Sam's in Canada" is in Quinte Mall, Belleville.... there's nothing to preserve.

I had no idea there was still one store left. Why did you wait until the very end to tell us what city it's in? You're supposed to mention that up front and not at the end. And it's not Sam Sinderman, it's Sam Sniderman.

I bought my very first album in 1981 at Sam The Record Man in Belleville. It was The Police’s Ghost In The Machine on cassette. Thanks to the Sam stores I frequented in Belleville and Toronto, my love of music was able to grow as I grew.
Also, Mr. Destun was my Business Administration teacher at Quinte Secondary circa 1990. Looking good Mr. Destun!

Well thank goodness you included the store location in the description. I didn't hear once "Belleville, Quinte Mall" in your story.
You show all this archive footage of the old Toronto location, where Sam the Record Man is long gone.
One would think that when reporting on "The last Sam the Record Man in Canada", the report would include WHERE in Canada. .... like the "reporting" done on "The last Blockbuster".

From what I read on their Facebook page. Sam The Record Man will be closing, and the 2 other record stores they own (“Now and Then” in Kingston and Oshawa) have been sold to new owners.

Glad I was part of this era of Sam The Record Man and shopping malls in general. People walk around now wondering why they feel somethings missing. :)

That was the highlight of my gr. 8 class trip. Our eyes and mouths were just wide open. The downside of our class trip was the Toronto police. We usually stopped by this lil corner store after a day of visiting Toronto sites.cops rushed into the lil store . We used to take turns entering the as there was maybe 30 of us including some adults.out of nowhere I got a gun pointed to my face.the shop owner tried telling the officers, they ok. But wasn’t having it. Just seeing our chaperones crying on the sidewalk. After things settled down cops played it down to they were after another group of kids. That was the end of our trip. We worked all year to raise money. Only to be ruined by a couple bullies. This was before feelings and rights. I wonder it it be to late for a class action case against Toronto police. I swear that is some of the reason for my insomnia. Our teacher was fresh out university. @21 she pulled off . I can’t even remember her name. McFadden. I believe. You was awesome.

Who cares, capitalism dictates that some have to dissapear and some one else will come up, as for that family that owned it well they have made millions and they have enjoyed their money

Certainly if there cannot be a successful business case made for the store, then it has to go.. but downtown Toronto used to have a lot more to do in the evening. Couples, families, tourists.. would go shopping. Now, so much commerce is done online. I think it is unfortunate, but I concede largely inevitable.
