A true Doheny Story from long ago:
I lived on Beach Rd during the winter of 76-77 when they built the sewer plant. A steel trench wall was put in at the creek so they could lay the pipeline out to sea.
This created a incredible sandbar with hollow tubes grinding down the beach for about a hundred plus yards!!
I went from surfing uppers everyday to getting empty barrels everyday.
The only guy out besides myself was Munoz and he did not tell anyone nor did I. We had it to ourselves for the winter.
It was our Secret spot right there just off PCH
Because unless you lived on beach road the wave could not be seen from coast hwy. Because of a big berm of sand built up blocking the view from PCH.
That year had some epic west swells and It just ground out the barrels weather it was 2 foot or 8 foot everyday was just grinding tubes.
Pops Proctor said it was the best he had ever seen Doheny.

Try Doheny on a high tide summer evening with a good south swell. That backswell from the shore will throw you off your board, colliding with a wave that has no break yet. FUN!!!

Doheny is full of chill, Malibu is full of try-hards.

All comparisons and analogies are on point, but I've gotta' say, having surfed both on midweek morning glass, Doheny still has respect for etiquette. Wish I could say the same for 'bu.

A good beginner comparison would be Doheny and Mondos? Also wouldn’t mind seeing one on etiquette at Rincon over Malibu. Love the vids. Definitely nailed the the comparisons here. 🤙

The inside break (or after the peak) at lowers is the best place to learn.

Fun comparison! I learned to surf at Doheny. San Onofre is another one of those stay all day slow rolling surf spots in so Cal. BTW - What happened to the audio on this upload? It's all over the place.

Back in the early 60s I surfed Doheny with less than 10 guys in the water, and five were with me.

Ive been surfing Malibu off/on since the 70s and when the swell is breaking right you can ride for a long time, maybe a minute. Unfortunately on that day there will be 60 guys in the water, its not surfing, its survival, weaving around everyone, trying not to get run over. I have resorted to surfing at night sometimes to avoid the crowds. Its safer in the dark than in the crowds. IMHO

It’s Doheny for me, though I actually started w/lessons 20 yrs ago in HB and MB. The comparison to a community pool at the height of summer is an apt one. You can catch the ‘Bu 1st Point fights live almost anytime on the Surfline webcam, though it doesn’t look too too bad as of an hour ago. Are early mornings or evenings best, fall/winter better than summer, or are these spots always crowded now?

there is a great video, I think procter surfboards, that shows a guy on a shortboard catching up to, and passing multiple surfers that drop in way in front of him at various sections of the wave...

Coming from a beach break where I usually find my own peak… this actually looks like a lot of fun surfing party waves all day, sure you can’t do much carving but it looks fun enjoying a wave with people next to you.

While I agree that Malibu is generally a stronger wave and Doheney a softer one, it is less steadfast rule for Doho sense it is not a pure point break like Malibu. Both are rather consistent Southern facing break so they usually pick up the same swell. Doho has three main breaks just like Malibu but they’ll never connect into one long ride like Malibu can do, each break generally starts out on a bit of, to very much so a slab of reef, and then as the wave pushes in it’ll connect to softer inside point and beach breaks But some of the best Longboarders in the world will also be seen at Doho often enough especially at the Bone Yard out set of reefs. So I t would be very inaccurate to paint it as a purely beginner wave! Yes, inside the “Bone Yard” is purely for beginner (the best in the continental US probably) but the outside spots are a grouping of modest to rather significant reefs that make for a fantastically consistent take off and at times it can be just nasty in a way that a point break just can’t do. Addition the outer Doho reef will sustain the biggest waves you’ll see on the SoCal Coast. Doho can get HUGE at time but it’ll never be as holow or as long a ride as Malibu nor as frequent. The other factor for Doho is that San O, Churches and Trestles are just another 15 minutes down the road which Malibu does not have any analog sibling so close like that so there is less pressure to pick that spot or not surf at all.

I went to doheny last week for first time in years, I also learned there, was very crowded with LOTS of kids and families surfing. Malibu is the opposite with more adults and hardly any youngsters. Both have beginner and experienced surfers, but I’ve noticed malibu has more very advanced.

*I've given up on travel; Mex & Hawaii, too much bullshit, and time wasting.*
*I've found that solitude is available at various less known reefs in (Summer) Laguna, (Winter) San Diego, and the list gets bigger if you have watercraft transpo.*
*PS: You know, it doesn't matter if the waves are maxed at Trestles or Rincon; spectators make up the crowd.*

Brad, enjoy most of your vids but you didn’t do Doheny justice. I’m from South Bay originally and went to the Bu on occasion. It’s a great wave, no doubt. But your depiction and vid of Doheny was poor. Give it a decent S/SW swell and it’s a whole lotta fun…and when out reef is working I’ve caught 1500’ 45 seconds rides on bombs! One thing locals at Doheny hate to hear is “it’s just Doho”.
Families. Crowds. Sometimes smaller waves. But respect the locals, aunties and uncles, and live aloha…and maybe next time film on an actual swell (I’ve seen Malibu flat too)
