And, though I'm not a smoker, that scene when HB looks at the lipstick on the end of a cigarette of the woman he helped after the bombing attack, and then put it in his mouth spoke volumes!

Let's focus on the French General's lie ) ,: we are not invading , it is our duty because the League of Nations ordered us to do so( F.O please : The League of Nations was established by U.K , France and USA after defeating Germany and Ottoman Turkey which was nicknamed (the sick man ) before WWI . The two colonialists divided Middle East and North and central Africa between themselves . UN was established after WWII . The British got the oil rich countries and prospered and the French had their disasters with their foreign league in Algiers . U.S.A doesn't invade , it wants to import $$$$ by exporting democracy , by exporting and smuggling weapons to fighting countries and fighting factions in a country .
Interesting that this was film was made while The French were fighting in Vietnam, with supplies provided by The U.S.A. The message at the end is clear regarding war profiteering and arms suppliers being the real cause for war. One might consider this to have been the first anti-Vietnam War film made, in the same way MASH was set during The Korean War but was intended as a statement on Vietnam. I wasn't familiar with this film before. I never knew there was a film with Bogart and Zero Mostel.

Great classic Film Noir thriller set in the Middle East - Damascus, Syria 1925. Bogie is stylishly late in his character's introduction in this film, and the anticipation was not disappointing. He plays it well, produced it himself through his own company, Santana Productions, named after his sailboat Santana. A good low-budget B movie that succeeds in dramatic content. Filmed in 1951.

What's with the comparisons to Casablanca? Just because there's 2 short restaraunt scenes? Seems to me they're nothing alike except for Bogie. This is a good film. It has a good plot and a gorgeous female star. Marta is much prettier than the star of Casablanca, and just as good an actress. And since that film isn't all it's cracked up to be anyway, I didn't bother comparing them at all, until I read all the other comparisons below. I enjoyed it. Many good wartime films are based in the Middle East. That doesn't make them alike. And Damascus is very far away from Algiers. Casablanca had some comical characters and some jokes, but this is still a very good film.

It has never been suggested that subscribing to a channel would lessen or eliminate ads. Only by paying for the premium version of UA-cam would you get that. Some people say ad blocker apps help a lot, but I suspect that you get what you pay for, and that free ad blockers probably don't work all that well. Most movies only have a few ads anyway. I can tolerate that. It's still much better than ordinary tv.
Cobb and Bogart play a couple of misanthropes. End up risking their own necks on a discontented whim. Now the Col can live the rest of his life in envy of Smith. Plot and dialogue atypically sour. When writers could take time to construct something timeless around the darkness of man. The more I see old productions like this, my respect grows.

It has never been suggested that subscribing to a channel would lessen or eliminate ads. Only by paying for the premium version of UA-cam would you get that.
Some people say ad blocker apps help a lot, but I suspect that you get what you pay for, and that free ad blockers probably don't work all that well. Most movies only have a few ads anyway. I can tolerate that. It's still much better than ordinary tv.
